Blowout suspected in crash that claimed lives of Diogo Jota and brother
Jota, a Portuguese international, was 28. Silva was 26.
Multiple reports said the siblings were found dead after their Lamborghini went off the road on an isolated stretch of highway. Police said the car was in flames upon arrival.
A Spanish Civil Guard spokesperson said it is believed that the driver lost control after a tyre blew out, per ESPN. It was not immediately clear who was driving the car.
Jota helped Liverpool capture the Premier League championship last season. He also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League last month.
"We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day," the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement.
Jota recorded 65 goals and 26 assists in 182 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.
He married his wife, Rute Cardoso, last month. They have three children.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota's teammate with Portugal, sent his condolences to the brothers' family.
"It doesn't make sense. We were just together with the national team, you had just got married," Ronaldo wrote in Portuguese in a post on social media.
"To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you."
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, who is a minority owner of Liverpool FC, also took to social media in response to the news.
"My prayers goes out to his loved ones during this time! May you all be guided and protected! YNWA JOTA!!" he wrote.
The Premier League also released a statement on social media.
"Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre," the statement read. "Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo's family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed. We will continue to support our friends and colleagues at the club." - Field Level Media/Reuters

Neves serves as pallbearer at Jota funeral hours after emotional Club World Cup match
ORLANDO: Al-Hilal's Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo flew to Portugal for the funeral for their former teammate Diogo Jota after an emotional Club World Cup quarter-final against Fluminense on Friday that saw them break down in tears during the minute's silence. Neves, one of Jota's closest friends, served as a pallbearer for the Liverpool forward who died alongside his younger brother Andre Silva following a car accident in northwestern Spain on Thursday morning when their Lamborghini veered off the road and caught fire. Tributes have continued to pour in for the brothers with footballing greats including Cristiano Ronaldo and Steven Gerrard, joining the Prime Ministers of Portugal and Britain in mourning the loss. Friday's match between Al-Hilal and Fluminense in Orlando began with players and fans observing a minute's silence in memory of the two brothers. Neves, who played with the 28-year-old Jota during their days at Wolverhampton Wanderers, issued a touching tribute on Instagram about an hour before kick-off. "Wherever you are, I know you're going to read this, we've never been one for this sort of thing and maybe now I'll regret it a little, but you know what you mean to me just as much as I know what I am to you," Neves said. "More than a friendship, we're family, and we're not going to stop being family just because you've decided to sign a contract a little further away from us! "When I go to the national team, you'll still be by my side at the dinner table, on the bus, on the plane... you'll always be there with me, as usual. We'll keep laughing, making plans, sharing our lives with each other. "I'll make sure you're always there and I'll make sure your family never lacks anything while you're there, far away but thinking of us, waiting for us ... "As of today, you'll be on the pitch with me, and we'll follow our path together, on the stage where we met." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ruben Neves (@rubendsneves) Chelsea's Portuguese forward Pedro Neto also paid a heartfelt tribute to his friends when he walked out on the field with a shirt bearing their names before their quarter-final against Palmeiras in Philadelphia. "We spoke with Pedro yesterday and this morning and this afternoon and it was completely Pedro's decision to play or not to play," Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said after his team's 2-1 win. "He did, he made a fantastic effort to play this game, to play with his teammates, and we really appreciate what he has done. "I just said to the players that this win is especially for him because we know how close he was, and the effort that he has made. So no doubt that we really appreciate what he decided in the end." --REUTERS

PSG mental resilience key to reaching Club World Cup semi-finals
ATLANTA: Much has been made of European champions Paris Saint-Germain's attacking flair, their rapid and dangerous wingers and thrilling style, but what carried them through to the Club World Cup semi-finals on Saturday was a dose of resilience. Luis Enrique's side beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in Atlanta with just nine men at the end after late red cards for Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made several good saves to help the French treble winners progress to the final four, where they will meet a familiar face in Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe. Captain Marquinhos said his team's mentality was vital to keep adding silverware to their trophy cabinet. "It was a game that taught us lessons, a game that brought us out of our comfort zone," the Brazilian defender told reporters. "(It showed) the mentality of our group, it's something we talk about a lot – winning is very hard and to keep winning is even harder. "That's our mentality today, to show we are always hungry, that we always want to go further." Luis Enrique explained that his team's work over the past year has contributed to their growing resilience. "This goes back to the season that we played, we suffered together... we displayed a true team spirit," said the Spaniard. "We may win, we may lose, we may have a draw, but our attitude, our actions are there." PSG won the Champions League for the first time in their history in May after a tricky run to the final, including a last-16 triumph over Liverpool on penalties. Donnarumma was the hero as they dug deep at Anfield in March and ousted Arne Slot's side, who were among the favourites to win the trophy. "We even went to Liverpool looking for a result – you need a very good mentality. Today again, with two fewer men, we were all together on the pitch, defending as a team, helping each other out there," said Marquinhos. "When the (first) red card happened I looked at my team-mates and I saw they were pumped up to defend together. "We talked to each other, we said we'll defend, we won't concede goals, this game is ours and we'll defend hard to the end. "I knew nothing would happen – we said that our team is very strong in this moment... it doesn't matter what happens, mentally we're ready." In fact, with PSG down to nine men and leading through Desire Doue's goal, they held off Bayern and added a second through Ousmane Dembele. The Parisians also impressed against Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals, resisting Mikel Arteta's side in the first leg to claim a hard-fought 1-0 win at the Emirates Stadium. They fell two goals down in the Coupe de France semi-final against Dunkerque, before bouncing back to win 4-2 on the way to claiming the trophy. Luis Enrique said his squad had a "great ability" to manage difficult moments after that Cup win in April, and the coach again praised his team for their strength to hold on against Bayern. "It's a team that has resilience, our supporters, they have great resilience," said Luis Enrique. "We are a team that is ready to compete at all times, no matter the result." Marquinhos said the former Spain and Barcelona coach's work was a key reason for the club's mental strength improving. Previous PSG sides have been littered with star names but lacked the nous and grit to triumph on the biggest occasions. "The key is our coach, he has brought his philosophy, he's brought with him his mentality, he has prepared the team very well from the first day he arrived," said Marquinhos. "He was looking to improve the team mentally, to be ready for everything that can happen in a game... "We went through it all this season, bad moments in which we didn't get results, when we played well but didn't score." Bayern coach Vincent Kompany recalled the excessive criticism of Luis Enrique after the Germans edged PSG 1-0 in the Champions League first round in November. However, after they overcame that hardship among others to dominate Europe, hammering Inter Milan in the most one-sided final in the competition's history, few would bet against them going on to conquer the world.--AFP

Chelsea splash £48.5m on Gittens in youth-to-Euro-star return
LONDON, July 6 — Chelsea added England under-21 international winger Jamie Gittens to their array of attacking talent yesterday from Borussia Dortmund. The Blues will reportedly pay an initial £48.5 million (RM280 million) for the 20-year-old, who was in Chelsea's academy as a youth player, with a further £3.5 million in add-ons. Gittens eventually moved to Manchester City's academy before signing for Dortmund in 2022. He made 107 appearances for the German giants, scoring 17 goals, 12 of which came in the Bundesliga and Champions League last season. 'It's a great feeling to join such a big club as Chelsea,' said Gittens. 'I can't wait to learn from everyone in the team and to push myself to the max here. It's an amazing feeling.' Gittens became Chelsea's fifth signing of another big-spending summer, joining forwards Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, midfielder Dario Essugo and defender Mamadou Sarr. Brazilian rising star Estevao Willian, 18, will also join the Premier League giants, in a deal agreed last year, after scoring against Chelsea in Palmeiras' 2-1 Club World Cup quarter-final defeat on Friday. Gittens, though, will not be eligible to feature in Chelsea's semi-final against Fluminense on Tuesday or the final should the Blues progress. 'Jamie Gittens' career exemplifies the development of top talents at BVB,' said Dortmund CEO Lars Ricken. 'We discovered him very early, signed him almost at no cost, continuously developed him in our youth academy, and provided him with playing time at the highest professional level. 'Jamie has repaid that trust with dedication, performance, and goals. His transfer back to his home country would be highly valuable for us.' Chelsea are under pressure to recoup some of their transfer spend in sales over the coming months. On Friday, they were fined €31 million by Uefa for two breaches of financial sustainability rules, with a further €60 million suspended as part of a four-year settlement agreement. Moreover, Chelsea, who have qualified for the Champions League, cannot register any new players for European competition unless they earn more from transfer sales than they spend on new signings. — AFP
