Springbok coach Erasmus introduces 'hybrid player' Esterhuizen
CAPE TOWN - Innovative South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus called centre-turned-flanker Andre Esterhuizen a "hybrid player" on Saturday after a 54-7 victory over the Barbarians in wet and cold Cape Town.
When replacement back Andre Esterhuizen came on early in the second half of the non-cap exhibition match for the world champions, it was as a loose forward.
"You can call him a hybrid player, he is a backline player who can also play in the forwards now," Erasmus told a press conference.
"You can have a forward covering a back position like (flanker) Kwagga Smith covering wing, and you can have a back covering a forward position, like Andre.
"We started chatting to Andre about it five months ago, now he is a backline player who can also play as a forward."
Former Springboks flanker Erasmus, who played key coaching roles in the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup triumphs of South Africa, is a master innovator.
He is best known for changing the traditional five forwards-three backs split on the substitutes' bench, choosing six-two and even seven-one combinations instead.
Erasmus hailed lock Lood de Jager, back in the team after a two-year absence with a career-threatening heart illness and then injuries.
"The condition that he had was almost career-ending, but when we did the fitness testing three weeks ago, he was exceptional," said the coach.
LOCK DEPTH
"His body might be 32 or 33, but he has had some 'rest' in the last couple of years, and I think that showed.
"We are very glad Lood came through, and we have some nice depth at lock now," said Erasmus, referring to eight locks in a 45-man squad for three July Tests against Italy and Georgia.
After torrential rain during the eight-try victory over the Baabaas, Erasmus said he was hoping for dry weather when the record four-time Rugby World Cup title-holders face Italy on July 5.
"Some of the half gaps and some of the line breaks we made today would have stuck if the weather had been drier," he said.
"We cannot wait to play on a dry pitch and improve our attack. We want to get better, and in the next three matches, we will be trying to focus on ourselves before the Rugby Championship.
"We know who is going to play in the two Tests against Italy, and certainly by the end of the Georgia game, which will be a grind, we will have a group that have had some game time.
"We will not get carried away with this performance, (but) some of the newer guys showed us that they can do it at this level," added Erasmus.
Democratic Republic of Congo-born flanker Vincent Tshituka from the Sharks, one of four debutants, scored two tries.
South Africa face Italy in Pretoria, then in Gqeberha on 12 July, before a one-off Test against Georgia in Mbombela on 19 July.
Two Rugby Championship fixtures each against Australia, New Zealand and Argentina follow between August and October.
November Tests in France, Italy, Ireland and Wales complete the schedule for the Springboks, who will defend the World Cup in Australia in 2027.

Rassie to ring changes for Italy as Springboks spread game time
There are likely to be a number of changes to the Springbok team for their first official Test of the season against Italy from the one that faced the Baabaas. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus chats to the media after their thumping win over the Barbarians in Cape Town. Picture: Grant Pitcher/Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is expected to ring the changes for the first Test of the incoming series against Italy in Pretoria this weekend as he aims to spread game time across the whole squad over the coming weeks. The Boks got their season off to a cracking start with a 54-7 thumping of the Barbarians in their one-off non-Test in Cape Town on Saturday, and now turn their attention to their next three games against Italy and Georgia. Heading into the Baabaas match the Boks only made part of their squad available, leaving out most of the players who featured in various franchise finals late in the club season. But they will now have the full group of 46 players available for the incoming series, and might possibly even add a few extra players to the group for their last game against Georgia in Mbombela. Speaking after the Baabaas romp, Erasmus explained that the players who will be facing Italy in the matches in Pretoria and Gqeberha already knew the team lineups. 'The guys will know tomorrow (Sunday) night who's playing Italy 'one' and 'two'. They've got a fairly good idea already. The guys who played the Barbarians knew two weeks ago, so they had two weeks of training together,' said Erasmus. 'That's always a little bit of a caveat. If things don't go according to plan, Italy 'two' can always change. But we do know who the core of the team will be. So we definitely know who's in the mix for Italy 'one'.' Japan players The Japan-based players are expected to get some more game time, while senior players like captain Siya Kolisi, who was pulled out of the Baabaas game with a stiff neck on Friday, Eben Etzebeth, Bongi Mbonambi, Handre Pollard and Willie le Roux could all be in line to play this weekend. It will be interesting to see if any the four uncapped players who featured against the Baabaas, namely Vincent Tshituka, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Neethling Fouche and Marnus van der Merwe, will receive their official first caps, while the Bulls players, such as Wilco Louw and Ruan Nortje, and Thomas du Toit (Bath) will also be in the mix. Erasmus also confirmed that star loose forward Pieter-Steph du Toit, who has been out injured since undergoing shoulder surgery in November last year, would likely be available for selection for the second Italian game. 'We won't get carried away with this performance (against the Baabaas). Certainly some guys showed us that they can do it at this level, but we'll layer them in to make sure there's a balance,' explained Erasmus. 'I think guys like Damian (de Allende), Jesse (Kriel) are a bit undercooked. Kurt-Lee (Arendse) hasn't really played in a lot of matches either in Japan and didn't come back to the Bulls. 'So we'll try to strike a balance so that when we're done with Georgia, we've got a group of 45 or 50 (players) that got some game time.'

Neethling Fouché on Bok debut: I just focused on not falling when we ran onto the field
Bok newcomer Neethling Fouché (right) celebrates winning the Qatar Airways Cup with fellow debutants Vincent Tshituka (middle) and Asenathi Ntlabakanye (left) in Cape Town on Saturday after the Springboks defeated the Barbarians. Photo: Ayanda Ndamane Independent Newspapers Image: Ayanda Ndamane Independent Newspapers It wasn't easy to control his emotions when he ran onto the field and sang the national anthem in his first-ever international match for South Africa. But one thing Neethling Fouché controlled was not stumbling as he was running out at the DHL Stadium, like his prop mate Asenathi Ntlabakanye did when the Springboks faced the Barbarians on Saturday. Fouché came on as a substitute shortly after halftime in what he describes as being 'a dream come true'. Video Player is loading. 'You know, you watch the Springboks and dream of playing for them one day, I got to do it,' Fouché said. 'It was unbelievable. I had to walk a bit of a gravel road to get here, but I just tried to soak it in. Yes, it was a Barbarians game, and the score was high, but it was really physical out there. 'When I ran out ahead of the national anthem, I just didn't want to fall like Asa. If you didn't see that, just go and check the highlights,' Fouché laughingly said. 'That was my first focus running out. After that, it was difficult to control your emotions when you sing your national anthem. My entire family was here for the game. As soon as I heard I was playing, they booked plane tickets, all the way from Rustenburg. It truly was a dream come true.' While it was an unofficial match, Fouché, alongside newcomers flanker Vincent Tshituka, Ntlabakanye, and hooker Marnus van der Merwe, acquitted themselves well of their tasks. Head coach Rassie Erasmus was pleased with their performances but said that there is room for improvement from the entire team. Fouché said he wasn't too focused on his performance, but more on what the team required of him. If he did that and achieved the team's goal, he was happy with his time on the field. 'Coach Rassie always tells us that you should not think about yourself when pulling the Springbok jersey over your head. We must think about South Africa and our teammates. I will always look to improve my game and will never be happy with everything. For me, there is always something I want to do better. 'But as long as I could contribute to the team in my own way. Every day you are with the Springboks is a massive privilege. You say thank you to the Great Man above to be part of this setup and that is how I will take this on, day by day.' On walking a longer journey than normal to get to the top, the 32-year-old said biding his time paid off in the end.
