Uruq Bani Ma'arid joins International Union for Conservation of Nature Green List

Saudi Gazette report
RIYADH — Uruq Bani Ma'arid, one of Saudi Arabia's most ecologically significant protected areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas. This recognition confirms the site's global ecological importance and highlights the Kingdom's expanding leadership in conserving arid-land habitats.
Saudi Arabia's inclusion of Uruq Bani Ma'arid follows earlier Green List achievements, notably for the Ibex Protected Area and the King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve. These milestones reflect sustained progress toward excellence in protected-area management.
Uruq Bani Ma'arid spans 12,765 square kilometers at the western edge of the Empty Quarter—the world's largest continuous sand desert—harboring the greatest biodiversity in the Empty Quarter. In 2023, the landscape was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding natural value.
The IUCN Green List sets the global benchmark for effective and equitable protected-area management.
To qualify, sites must demonstrate transparent governance, measurable conservation outcomes, and meaningful engagement with local stakeholders. Uruq Bani Ma'arid met these criteria through its integrated planning, resilient ecological monitoring, and habitat restoration programs. Under the stewardship of the National Center for Wildlife, Uruq Bani Ma'arid has successfully implemented a breeding and reintroduction program for the endangered Arabian oryx.
Commenting on the occasion, CEO of the National Center for Wildlife Dr. Mohammad Qurban said that Uruq Bani Ma'arid exemplifies what science-guided conservation can achieve in extreme landscapes. "Its inclusion on the IUCN Green List reflects our dedication to protecting biodiversity and delivering real conservation impact at both national and global scales.'
He added that this milestone supports Saudi Arabia's contribution to the global 30x30 biodiversity target, protecting 30 percent of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030. It also aligns with the Saudi Green Initiative, which integrates conservation as a core pillar of Vision 2030.

Ceremony of replacing Holy Kaaba's Kiswa begins

Saudi Gazette report MAKKAH — The annual customary ceremony of replacing the Kiswa (cover) of the Holy Kaaba at the Grand Mosque in Makkah started officially on Wednesday evening. The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, through the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa, is undertaking the ceremony of replacing Kiswa, which is a tradition that has been carried out for over a century. The ceremony of replacing the Kiswa will be completed by Thursday morning, the first day of the new Hijri year. Earlier in a ceremony on June 8, Deputy Emir of Makkah Prince Saud bin Mishaal handed over the new Kiswa to Abdul Malik bin Taha Al-Shaibi, the senior keeper of the Grand Mosque. The new Kiswa was produced by the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa using natural black-dyed silk, embroidered in gold and silver threads. Officials and employees from the complex began the ceremony by removing the gilded curtain from the Kaaba door, which measures 6.35 meters in length and 3.33 meters in width, as well as dismantling the chandeliers and decorative ornaments. This marks the beginning of replacing the old Kiswa with a new one, crafted with exceptional precision and spiritual significance. A fully Saudi team of 154 trained craftsmen, each scientifically and practically qualified, is overseeing the process. Their duties include raising the old Kiswa, detaching the gilded elements, and installing the new Kiswa, which comprises 47 intricately embroidered black silk panels featuring 68 Qur'anic verses stitched with 24-karat gold-plated silver threads. The entire Kiswa weighs approximately 1,415 kilograms. To create the new Kiswa, the team used 120 kilograms of gold-plated silver thread, 60 kilograms of pure silver, 825 kilograms of silk, and 410 kilograms of raw cotton. Additionally, 54 gilded pieces were produced using eight specialized weaving machines within the complex. The ceremony is a profound expression of the Kingdom's dedication to serving Islam's holiest sites. The continued renewal of the Kaaba's Kiswa stands as a majestic and enduring symbol of reverence, care, and spiritual legacy upheld by Saudi Arabia for over a century.

Gazelle is desert's skittish, elusive icon and poets' enduring muse

RIYADH: The skittish gazelle, revered in Bedouin culture, is a defining symbol of wildlife in the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian gazelle is known for its agility, alertness and extreme caution, according to a recent Saudi Press Agency report. Gazelles are swift, reaching speeds of up to 100 kph in short bursts. Beyond its physical traits, the gazelle has become a cultural symbol of beauty and elusive elegance in Arab tradition, the SPA added. Poets have long compared their beloveds to the gazelle, immortalizing its qualities in verses from the pre-Islamic era to the present. In popular heritage, the skittish gazelle represents 'the hunter's pursuit,' highlighting the skill required to track it in sandy terrain, the SPA report stated. As a part of Saudi Arabia's biodiversity preservation efforts, the National Center for Wildlife and the Royal Reserves Council have launched initiatives to reintroduce gazelles into their natural habitats, to address their population decline. These efforts fall within a broader national strategy to restore ecological balance and ensure the sustainability of wildlife, alongside awareness programs that promote the preservation of this vital natural heritage. Earlier this month, NEOM reintroduced more than 1,100 animals, representing six species, to its expansive nature reserve, marking a major step in its broader mission to revive the region's natural balance. As NEOM's regreening program progresses — with 4.7 million trees, shrubs and grasses planted so far — the 530 Arabian Sand Gazelles currently in the reserve are thriving on the returning natural vegetation, aided by the removal of heavy livestock grazing. NEOM is also home to 223 Arabian gazelles, which are typically darker in color and more elusive, preferring to reside in foothills and rugged mountain terrain.

The Authority emphasized that the finest and highest-quality materials are carefully selected for use at the Kiswa Factory, where the sacred covering of the Kaaba is made with exceptional attention to detail. The selected fabrics include plain green silk (used behind the curtain), patterned black silk, plain black silk, light beige cotton lining fabric, plain red silk, plain white cotton fabric, and patterned green silk. The patterned green silk, in particular, is used for the inner covering of the Kaaba and for the covering of the Prophet's Chamber in Madinah.
