More than £1 billion in incorrect Universal Credit payments have been blocked by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in a drive to stop people falling into financial difficulties. The milestone was reached after a programme to review payments was ramped up by the Labour Government last summer, with more than one million cases now looked at.
Overpayments can ultimately lead to financial difficulties for claimants by causing them to fall into debt. The 'Targeted Case Review' was introduced in 2022 to detect incorrect payments, with around 25,000 claims reviewed in the first year.
Since July 2024, DWP has nearly doubled the number of people working in its Universal Credit Targeted Case Review team to 6,000.
The Department said this significant increase in staff has boosted the number of existing claims reviewed to over one million, saving £1 billion in incorrect payments by detecting historic errors and preventing future overpayments that can result in debts accruing.
The number of claim reviews will continue to ramp up now the department has reached its staff target, with nearly 6,000 staff to review claims with forecasted savings of £13.6 billion by 2030.
Minister for Transformation, Andrew Western, said: 'This target could not have been reached without this significant boost to staffing numbers - meaning we now have forecasted savings of £13.6 billion by 2030.
'This is a vital programme not only ensuring overpayments are corrected but also makes certain people who are being underpaid receive the money they are entitled to.
'We will not tolerate fraud, error or waste and are committed to safeguard taxpayers' money so it can be invested in the public services we all deserve.'
What is a Targeted Case Review?
The 'Targeted Case Review' team reviews payments to prevent customers falling into or accumulating further debt, identify unreported changes in circumstances, correct claims retrospectively, and refer suspected cases of fraud for investigation.
Reviews verify claimants' eligibility for the benefits they receive by sending a notification to their online account to request proof of identity and other documentation.
In the Autumn Budget, the Labour Government committed to the continuation of Targeted Case Review activity for a further two years, with learnings used to prevent error from entering the welfare system in the first place.
The aim is to help provide a fair, high-quality service that ensures customers receive their full entitlement and avoid unnecessary debt.
These major milestones come as the UK Government outlines further plans to strengthen its ability to reduce fraud and error through the Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Bill.
DWP said: 'This is alongside its work to support people into work and become less reliant on the benefit system to drive productivity and unlock growth as part of its Plan for Change.'

‘Scamazon' – how fake emails are targeting Prime subscribers
As a frequent Amazon shopper you pay £95 for an annual Prime subscription, so when an email arrives warning the price is going up you are quick to react. The Guardian's journalism is independent. After a recent surge in customers reporting fake messages, Amazon emailed its more than 200 million Prime members globally to warn them. The company took this step to ensure 'scammers are not using our brand to take advantage of people who trust us' and 'educate consumers to avoid impersonation scams'. The fake emails claim your Amazon Prime subscription will automatically renew at an unexpected price (in the UK the service costs £95 a year or £8.99 a month). The messages sometimes include personal information gleaned from other sources in an attempt to appear legitimate. They may also include a 'cancel subscription' button that clicks through to a fake Amazon login page. This is not the only tactic being used to prey on Amazon shoppers. Earlier this year, the retailer warned of a 'striking' increase in phone-based impersonation scams in the UK. It also said that fraudsters were responding to customer complaints on social media using counterfeit profiles. They urge you to act quickly to make a payment. When you click through you will be asked for personal and payment details. Do not click on any links in these messages. The scammers are trying to steal your login and other sensitive personal information. You can just ignore the email or forward it on to As the scams happen away from its platform, the more consumers report them, the better Amazon's systems become at identifying those responsible. Last year, it got more than 55,000 phishing websites and 12,000 phone numbers shutdown. Amazon says: 'We encourage consumers to report suspected scams to us, so that we can protect their accounts and refer bad actors to law enforcement.' If you are keen to check the status of your Prime membership, open the Amazon mobile app, or go directly to Select 'Prime' from the main menu to view your membership status, renewal dates, and plan details. To check if a message is really from Amazon visit the 'message centre' under the 'your account' tab. Legitimate messages will appear there. If you clicked on a suspicious link, monitor your credit or debit card statements for unfamiliar charges, and contact your bank immediately about unauthorised transactions. To avoid falling victim to a scam, Amazon advises customers to use its apps, or type in the browser (you could bookmark this link). Remember the company will never request sensitive information outside the website or app. Also consider enabling two-step verification for extra security. You can do this via your account's 'login & security settings' or at Once you've activated this feature every time you log in you will be sent a code to input alongside your password. Another option is to enable Passkey to use your face, fingerprint, or the PIN that you use to unlock your device, to sign into your account.

DWP benefit payments may be cut by 15% in certain circumstances
The Department for Work and Pensions only approves these deductions in very specific circumstances Universal Credit and Pension Credit serve as vital financial support for many in the UK. However, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) warns that claimants may face cuts worth between 5% and 15% in very exceptional circumstances. These reductions, known as 'third-party deductions', occur when a benefits recipient has outstanding debts such as court fines, rent, Council Tax, or energy bills. Typically, these are made at a fixed rate until the debt is cleared, with a cap of three concurrent debts being repaid through this process. For those on Universal Credit, each debt incurs a 5% deduction from their benefit payment, although this can rise to between 10% and 15% for rent arrears. Claimants of other benefits like income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Income Support might also experience a weekly cut of £4.55 per debt. The DWP usually approves third-party deductions at the request of an organisation to which money is owed after other recovery methods have failed. Advice from the Government department explains: "You'll be told how much will be deducted by letter or in your Universal Credit journal." According to the Mirror, it also adds: "If you want to pay more than the fixed rate towards your debts, you must arrange this with the organisation you owe money to." Brits struggling with 'fuel debt'—the money owed for gas and electricity—can also refer to the process as Fuel Direct when setting up deductions to cover their energy use. The DWP advises: "Contact your supplier to set up deductions for your ongoing bills. They'll need your consent to request this for you. You can give consent on the phone. It does not need to be in writing. "Agree an amount with them that covers the cost of the energy you use. You can stop deductions for ongoing bills at any time. Contact the office that pays your benefit to request this. If you choose to stop making gas and electricity payments, contact your energy supplier to arrange a different way to pay. If you owe money but cannot afford more deductions to your benefits, your supplier can tell you what help is available for people on low incomes. They may be able to arrange a different way for you to pay." In cases where Brits disagree with the deductions made from their benefits, they are entitled to ask for a mandatory reconsideration. The DWP specifies that such requests need to be lodged within one month of the decision, along with a 'good reason' for the dispute. This may include the following instances: "Some decisions cannot be reconsidered. Others can go straight to an appeal," the DWP adds. "Your original decision letter will say if this applies to you."

James McMurdock took bank salary while ‘claiming Covid loans'
A former Reform MP who allegedly borrowed tens of thousands of pounds in Covid loans received a salary from an international bank throughout the pandemic. James McMurdock suspended himself from Reform UK last week after The Sunday Times posed questions about £70,000 he borrowed through two firms in 2020: one previously dormant, the other with negligible assets. The South Basildon & East Thurrock MP later said he had quit Nigel Farage's party after taking 'specialist advice' which 'is privileged and which I choose to keep private at this time'. He remains under investigation by the parliamentary commissioner for standards and was separately referred to the Public Sector Fraud Authority by the Covid corruption commissioner last week. Reform has called for him to resign so a by-election can take place.
