Viral video: Shahid Afridi's 'Boom Boom' welcome at Kerala alumni event triggers row; Organisers say "visit was unplanned"

Time of India01-06-2025
A major controversy has broken out after Pakistani cricketers
Shahid Afridi
and Umar Gul appeared at a dance event in Dubai, organised by a group claiming to be alumni of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat). The event was held on 25 May and has triggered strong criticism from several quarters in India.
Video goes viral, sparks outrage
The event was organised by the Cochin University BTech Alumni Association (CUBAA), UAE. A video of Afridi being welcomed at the venue went viral, with people in the crowd cheering him and shouting his nickname "Boom Boom." The event was hosted at the
Pakistan Association Dubai
(PAD), which has also added to the controversy.

Following backlash,
CUBAA UAE
issued an apology, saying Afridi's appearance was not planned and they never intended to invite him. They said they booked PAD as a venue long before any tensions between India and Pakistan escalated and could not change the location at the last minute.
Cusat denies any connection
Cusat was quick to distance itself from the event. In a statement, the university said it had no links to CUBAA UAE. It clarified that its only official alumni body is the Cusat Alumni Network (CAN), and that it was not aware of any such programme happening in Dubai.
The university said it had no affiliation, partnership, or communication with CUBAA UAE and had not authorised or supported the event in any way.

Political groups demand action
Several organisations linked to the Sangh Parivar, including the ABVP, strongly condemned the event. BJP leader K Surendran accused the organisers of insulting the memory of Indians who died in the Pahalgam terror attack. He said on Facebook, 'If not traitors, what else can you call the Malayali organisation that brought Pakistani cricketers for a celebration in Dubai?'
ABVP leaders have gone a step further, demanding that the passports of CUBAA UAE office-bearers be cancelled. They have written to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs, calling for a probe into the incident.
Organisers say cricketers just showed up
In a detailed statement, the organisers said they had no role in bringing Afridi or Gul to the event. They claimed the cricketers had arrived at the PAD building for a different event and made an unexpected appearance at the alumni gathering, which was just wrapping up.
They stressed that neither Afridi nor Gul was listed on their official programme. 'We regret any confusion or inconvenience caused. The cricketers' arrival was completely unplanned and we were not able to manage the crowd due to the surprise,' the statement said.
A sincere apology
CUBAA ended its note by expressing deep regret. 'We apologise to anyone who was hurt or offended by what happened. It was never our intention to upset anyone or bring disrespect to our country,' they said.
The incident continues to stir debate, especially with calls for investigations into how the event was organised and what links, if any, exist between the organisers and official alumni networks.

Amit Shah's promise on bail for nuns was not kept: Archbishop

Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplani on Friday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah's assurance that the Malayali nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh would be granted bail had not materialised. Addressing the media in Kannur on the sidelines of the protest led by the Thalassery, Kottayam and Kannur dioceses, Archbishop Pamplani said that although Amit Shah had promised that the Chattisgarh government would not oppose the bail plea, the government's lawyer argued in court that the nuns had committed a non-bailable offence. He noted that while the country at large acknowledged that the nuns had not done anything wrong, they remained in custody. Citing Central government data, he said forced conversions had not taken place in the country and termed the Prohibition of Forced Conversion Act as a tool to harass individuals like the detained nuns.

AIFF goes desi with Jamil as coach

Khalid Jamil will become first Indian full-time coach of Blue Tigers since Sukhvinder Singh in 2005 Panaji: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has cleared the path for Khalid Jamil to take over as coach of the national football team. Should Jamil – currently coaching Jamshedpur FC -- agree to the terms offered by the AIFF in the next 24 to 48 hours, he will become the first Indian as full-time coach since Sukhvinder Singh in 2005. Two other Indians, Armando Colaco and Savio Medeira, held interim charges, following the sacking of Bob Houghton in 2011. 'It was felt, for the betterment of Indian football, the federation must give an opportunity to an Indian coach,' the AIFF said in a statement after its executive committee meeting on Friday. 'The members felt that since India are set to participate in the CAFA Nations Cup this month, followed by back-to-back AFC Asian Cup final round qualifiers (against Singapore in October), Jamil would be a better option, since he has been working with Indian players on a regular basis. ' AIFF technical director Syed Sabir Pasha and national teams director Subrata Paul presented a SWOT analysis of all the three shortlisted coaches –Jamil, Stephen Constantine, and Stefan Tarkovic. While the mood was in favour of an Indian coach, a 'strong recommendation' from technical committee chairperson and former India captain IM Vijayan helped members decide. In its presentation, AIFF said Jamil's playing style is easy for the players to adapt, and that he is 'known to create teams that are hard to score against.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Seniors Are Snapping Up This TV Box, We Explain! In the Indian Super League (ISL), now the top-tier league, he has guided NorthEast United FC and Jamshedpur to the semifinals, despite being teams with much lower budgets. Jamil's teams are known to be disciplined and well drilled. It's no secret either that he likes to work with a core group of players who he has trusted through his career, none of them big names or superstars. 'At Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, two of the biggest clubs Khalid has managed, he was never really successful,' said Pradhyum Reddy, Dempo's technical director who has formerly coached in both I-League and ISL. 'The question is whether he can manage the egos (in the national team dressing room) or get rid of the egos.' Others feel Jamil's lack of experience with international football can prove to be challenging. The former India midfielder has not coached a club at the continental level or associated himself with any age-group national team in the past. In May, Kuwait-born Jamil turned down the chance to coach the India under-23 team, knowing he could throw his hat in the ring once Manolo Marquez made it clear that he was on his way out. 'Khalid was the best option among the three coaches who were shortlisted. It shows that the national team job is not reserved exclusively for foreigners. There is some level of meritocracy (with Indian coaches). Khalid has done well in the I-League, got results in the ISL too, so there is a pathway for Indian coaches. But purely from a technical point of view, it's not the best appointment,' said Reddy. Many feel the AIFF were left with no choice than make a domestic coach appointment due to the precarious state of its finances. The budgets, according to sources, have been approved only till December, when the 15-year agreement with its marketing partners comes to an end. 'Without an assured annual payment of Rs 50 crore (from the marketing partners), AIFF will be left with nothing. At times like these, hiring an experienced Indian coach makes perfect sense,' said one member. AIFF sources said the plan is to offer Jamil a two-year contract with a one-year extension clause. Neither party is in favour of a dual club-and-country role. BJP's Kerala, Chhattisgarh units divided over arrest of nuns; Chandrasekhar hopeful of ‘justice'

The recent arrest of two Catholic nuns from Kerala on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion in BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh has led to a disagreement between the party's State units in Kerala and Chhattisgarh, prompting the senior leadership to step in and facilitate a resolution. On Friday (August 1, 2025), Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the Chhattisgarh government will not oppose the bail applications of the two nuns who were arrested at Durg railway station on July 25. 'We hope that they get bail in the coming days because the State government has agreed not to oppose their bail,' he said, adding that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had clearly said that justice would be given to the nuns. Amid protests by the Christian community and political parties in Kerala demanding release of the nuns, the State unit continued its effort to mend bridges with Church leaders. Through its X handle, the unit on Friday posted a message from its former chief Kummanam Rajasekharan saying that it had been completely honest in its intervention in the issue. 'Shri George Kurien as Union Minister and Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar as State President have intervened in this issue,' he said. 'There is nothing to hide in this matter, the party is intervening in this issue with sincerity and honesty. The Christian community should understand this. The Congress and the Communist Party have deceived the Christian community the most,' said Mr. Rajasekharan. Earlier, as voices grew stronger demanding the release of the nuns, the matter drew wider attention. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on July 28 – via his X handle – had said that 'through inducement, an attempt was being made to engage in human trafficking and conversion' and that it was 'a serious matter related to women's safety', adding that the investigation in this case was still on. Hours later, Mr. Chandrasekhar termed the arrests as a case of 'misunderstanding', stating that the unit had contacted the Home Minister of Chhattisgarh and the State government, and the Union Home Ministry. 'We received tremendous support from the authorities... the accompanying girls are adults, and they had parental consent...,' he said. The same day, the party's Kerala State general secretary Anoop Antony reached Chhattisgarh and met the State's Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma. 'Our State general secretary is currently in Chhattisgarh, and we are committed to ensuring that all necessary assistance is provided to secure justice for the nuns under arrest. While Chhattisgarh, being a tribal state, has an anti-conversion law in place, we are convinced that the allegations of conversion against the Malayali nuns are not true,' posted Mr. Chandrasekhar on X, adding: '...the BJP is determined to stand by the nuns until they are released and justice is delivered.' However, the next day, BJP MP from Durg, Vijay Baghel, spoke during Zero Hour in Lok Sabha on the issue. Alleging a conspiracy by the Congress MPs to disturb communal harmony, he came out in support of the Chhattisgarh government for arresting the nuns. 'Around 8:30 a.m., one of the girls was seen crying, which drew the attention of some responsible citizens. When asked, she said she was brought there forcibly and wanted to return home,' Mr. Baghel said. 'This is a conspiracy to malign the image of the well-governed, sensitive government in Chhattisgarh and create tension between two religions. Are we not supposed to protect our daughters in Chhattisgarh?' he asked.
