BBC travel expert Simon Reeve says this is the best city in the world blending history and culture
BBC explorer Simon Reeve has named a city straddling the East and West as his favourite destination worldwide. He expressed his profound connection to a place where, he feels, history and culture can be felt in the air.
Having travelled to more than 130 countries, Simon recently wrapped up his latest journey, 'Scandinavia with Simon Reeve' – a breathtaking three-part series for the BBC, reports the Mirror.
Now, he has revealed his most cherished city. His selection is based on a sprawling metropolis that bridges the European and Asian continents and is home to what he describes as "one of the most stunning buildings on the planet".
Speaking to The Express, he said: "In terms of a city, I think Istanbul is not just spectacular, but you can't go there and not smell the history and the culture there. You know, I love how it's clearly divided.
You've got your old bit. You've got your modern bit. You've got your Eastern area, as well - the other side of the Bosphorus, Asia, basically. It is the point where, for a thousand years and more, the East and the West have met."
He also shared his "favourite little quirky thing" about the city, which is Hagia Sophia – the ancient basilica turned mosque that stands as a testament to history at 1,600 years old.
Simon elaborated on how this emblematic monument continues to captivate visitors as a magnificent structure that remains an active site of worship.
He shared: "I'll tell you my favourite little quirky thing actually, in many a way; there's a building in Istanbul called Hagia Sophia, which was a church, then a mosque, is now sort of a museum, just open as an attraction."
Simon went on to say: "But it's an incredible building - one of the most stunning buildings on the planet, and up at the top, inside on the upper balcony, there's a bit of graffiti carved into the balcony."
He was referring to ancient Viking runes inscribed into the Hagia Sophia during its tenure as a church. The National Museum of Denmark has identified the Viking visitors as Halvdan and Are.
According to Atlas Obscura, the inscription likely reads "Halfdan carved these runes" or "Halfdan was here", a detail that Simon found particularly captivating, dubbing it his "favourite little bit".
For the presenter, uncovering the story of the rune-carving Vikings was a "chill down the spine moment", underscoring that people have been explorers since the dawn of humanity.
He noted that throughout history, humans have always felt compelled to leave their mark and connect with these "incredible sights".
He concluded: "It's just a reminder that our ancestors travelled, and they were quite similar to us, actually. They probably wanted a beer, a selfie, and to leave a little bit of a mark behind."
All three episodes of Scandinavia with Simon Reeve are available for streaming on BBC iPlayer NOW.

'I visited 17 European cities but I would never return to three of them'
A travel influencer, who visited 17 European cities last year, has named and shamed three that they wouldn't have chosen to visit - and it's fair to say people were divided Choosing the ideal holiday spot can be a real head-scratcher. Yet, Sooyeon, a globetrotting influencer hailing from San Francisco, US, might just have the insights you need to whittle down your choices. Hitting 17 different cities across Europe last year, she confessed on her TikTok @ that there were three cities that didn't quite live up to expectations. "These are three cities I probably would've skipped," she shared. "Doesn't mean these are bad destinations, I just didn't enjoy them as much as other cities." She was quick to point out Madrid as her first let-down. In 2023, after enjoying a brief stint in Barcelona, she spent two-and-a-half days in Spain's capital but favoured the seaside charm of Barcelona over Madrid. She recounted: "The main reason is because I went to both Madrid and Barcelona on the same trip, and I feel like Madrid didn't have as many interesting things to do for me at least, other than the palace and museums." Sooyeon confessed that if she were to go to Spain again, she would skip Madrid and spend more time in Barcelona, instead. Her next disappointment was with Catania, a storied port city on Sicily's eastern seaboard. Sooyeon envisioned a lovely Italian getaway but the outcome left her less than thrilled. Courting controversy, she remarked: "...The city just felt a little run down and not the safest. People were also not afraid to stare at you - I'm sure they weren't trying to be rude or mean, but it felt a little uncomfortable as a female traveller." Sooyeon's take on Berlin stood out from her previous critiques of Catania and Madrid, reports the Express. She felt a sense of safety and was far from bored, commending the city for its 'welcoming' vibe and 'cool cafes, shops and roads'. Yet, she felt something was amiss. "Don't get me wrong, I would love to live in Berlin," Sooyeon admitted. "But, as a tourist, I feel like the main attractions are history museums which I personally am not the biggest on, especially because at this point on my trip I was getting severe museum fatigue." She explained: "The food scene was also pretty international, so I didn't find as many options for authentic local food, which is something I try to eat everywhere I go. Again, this is just my experience - what doesn't work for me, could work for you." Sooyeon's candid reviews sparked a flurry of responses on TikTok, with users divided over her views on these popular destinations. One user defended Madrid: "I will not accept any Madrid slander! I've been like four times and it's an incredible city." Another urged travellers not to overlook Catania: "Everyone here pls don't skip Catania," while a different comment questioned her impression of Berlin: "Berlin is clean??? What girl???"

Extreme sports influencer falls 600ft to death into Italian Dolomites ravine crash
Extreme sports influencer Andreas Tonelli, 48, is believed to have crashed his mountain bike moments before he plummeted 600ft into a ravine in the Italian Dolomites An extreme sports influencer has died after tragically crashing his bike and plummeting 600ft into a ravine. Andreas Tonelli's family raised the alarm on Tuesday evening after he failed to return home from a ride in the Italian Dolomites, sparking a huge helicopter search at around 9pm. His body was found in a ravine in the Vallunga area of Val Gardena three hours later, and was recovered the following morning. Authorities believe he plummeted from the mountain into the ravine below after a bicycle accident. Tonelli, 48, had 127,000 followers on Instagram, where he regularly shared videos of his daring trips on his mountain bike. One recent video showed him perilously clambering across a rock face using a wire to pull himself across with his bicycle on his back. In 2014, he left what he described as his "boring office job" to become a full-time bike guide. He had been organising bike trips since 2003, including routes across Italy, throughout Europe, and eventually all over the world. Mr Tonelli was also known to be a keen photographer, hiker and climber, and had proudly spoken of his bicycle climb of the active volcano Nevado Ojos de Salado in Chile. Among his feats was the completion of the L'Onda di Hokusai ('Hokusai Wave'), a route in the Dolomites made up nearly entirely of frozen mountaintop, and a successful scaling of the Tupungato volcano in central Chile. The accident on Tuesday unfolded in the Vallunga area of the Italian Dolomites as he tackled a difficult section alone. Just moments before the fatal fall, he posted an Instagram story showing himself smiling at the summit. Andreas was born in the tiny village of Völs am Schlern, at the foot of the Schlern mountain. In a recent comment about his love for travelling, he wrote: "But since I spend seven months a year travelling, I also call home all the other places in the world where I feel happy and free." Tributes have flooded in from within the European mountain biking community, with many speaking of him as an inspirational figure in the sport Outdoor clothing manufacturer Norrona, who Mr Tonelli worked with as a brand ambassador, wrote on Facebook: "Andreas was a passionate, dedicated, and important voice within the Norrøna family. "We will remember his big smile and his deep love for mountain biking, for nature, and for the friendships forged out there. Not only did he take part in testing and developing new Norrøna products, Andreas also worked as a bike guide for Norrøna Adventure — sharing his passion for mountain biking with every guest he met. "He made a profound impression on everyone fortunate enough to meet him. Our heartfelt thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family and friends." One person commenting on the post described him "one of the most inspiring people in the hike and bike adventure scene", while another recalled meeting him on a trail in Norway and described him as a "good person".
