Woman, 69, arrested after British mum-of-four found stabbed to death in France

Metro02-05-2025
A 69-year-old woman has been arrested after a British mum-of-four was found stabbed to death at her home in France.
Karen Carter, 65, was found outside a home she owned and rented out in the village of Trémolat, east of Bordeaux, on Tuesday evening.
She was lying near her car with five stab wounds, pointing to 'ferocious violence and a desire to kill'.
Sylvie Martins-Guedes, the prosecutor for Bergerac, has now revealed a woman known to the victim has been detained over the attack.
The prosecutor said: 'A woman aged 69-years-old, who comes from Trémolat and is part of the couple's circle, has been detained.'
Alan Carter, her husband, said he only heard about his wife's murder during a phone call with his cousin in the UK.
They had owned the property for around 15 years.
Karen's body was discovered by a friend, who had also been out with her earlier in the evening.
Touching tributes have since been paid to the victim, who was described as someone 'who got on with everybody'.
A Trémolat resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: 'Everyone is in total shock – she was a delightful, energetic person who got on with everybody.
'We saw emergency vehicles in the village, and then lots of police cars, and then the area around her house was cordoned off.'
She added: 'Nobody can understand how this could have happened in a peaceful place like this.
'We are all keeping our doors locked – it is deeply worrying.'
'The victim had several injuries, including five deep ones caused by a sharp object, notably on her right breast, groin, arm, and leg. More Trending
'The injuries were particularly violent, and their location demonstrated an intent to kill.'
French regional newspaper Sud Ouest described the woman as a 'British national' and 'an active participant in Trémolat life.'
Trémolat is a commune in the Dordogne, an area of France that is hugely popular with British tourists, second home owners and expat pensioners.
The British Foreign Office has been approached for comment while the investigation is ongoing.

Fury as brazen asylum seekers filmed shoplifting designer gear worth thousands before returning to hotel YOU pay for

ASYLUM seekers staying in taxpayer-funded hotels are swiping thousands of pounds of designer gear from top stores. Tipped off by a security firm, we saw organised gangs exit Liberty in London with alarm-dodging bags of luxury items. 7 7 7 They pounced at stores including Liberty, Polo Ralph Lauren and John Lewis — then headed back to their Holiday Inn home. The Sun was alerted to the situation by exasperated security staff who feel powerless to stop the brazen thefts. A whistle-blower said 70 per cent of shoplifters in the West End are asylum seekers. The man, who works in private security, said his teams are at breaking point and the area 'verging on lawless'. He added: 'The police rarely attend and the maximum we can hold them for is four hours — after that we just have to let them go. We see the same faces again and again.' Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick said: 'It is a slap in the face to British people for illegal migrants to break into the UK then engage in brazen criminality. They need to be deported immediately. 'The small boats are fuelling crime and making the public less safe. It's a national security emergency and Keir Starmer should treat it as one.' Last Thursday we saw a team of two migrants meet up at the Holiday Inn, Wembley. They carried bags lined with tin foil that stop security tags going off when leaving stores. After jumping Underground ticket barriers they headed to Bond Street station before hitting 15 nearby shops including Lillywhites, Hollister and Reiss. Police swarm 4-star London hotel set to house asylum seekers as furious protesters gather outside Later they met other teams and showed their ill-gotten gains. They also appeared to take stolen goods to a middle man before buying whisky and returning to the hotel. It is believed many migrants shoplift to pay debts they owe bosses behind the crossings. Our whistle-blower said that, when detained, the migrants show ID cards and admit they are asylum seekers, knowing that little can be done. The security professional added: 'The situation is getting out of control. We are helpless and cannot tackle the sheer numbers flooding the streets. 'I honestly think the area is verging on lawless. The police only turn up in two out of every ten men we detain. 'They don't have the resources, and when they do, the most they do is give them a Community Resolution Order. 7 'For me and my team, the men are easy to spot because they constantly reoffend. 'Once we do detain them, that just means their mates are even busier. They are often violent as well. We print the prices for the stolen items and take mugshots and their ID cards to give to the police. 'Usually it is high-ticket goods they target like Gucci, Prada and Louis Vuitton. 'Sometimes they won't have any ID but they tell us they came over on the boats and their address is the Holiday Inn or the Barbican.' The whistle-blower added of the alarm-dodging foil bags: 'They know what they are doing. They work in groups or pairs. One will be a spotter or cause a distraction while the other bags the stuff. 'We've noticed them sharing the same foil bag. So it is swapped around at the hotel depending who is going out on the rob that day. They always come after lunch, so 2pm.' The Holiday Inn in Wembley is home to 700 immigrants and is one of more than 200 asylum hotels around Britain. Residents get three meals a day and a weekly allowance. Ex- Tory security minister Sir John Hayes said: 'This very important investigation by The Sun shows Britain is importing criminals in droves. 'It's not fair to taxpayers or businesses to endure criminals who fully know they're here illegally then worsen that by committing further crimes. 'There is evidence here that this may be a very well organised crimewave, rather than sporadic cases by individuals. 'The Home Office must investigate immediately.' The Met said: 'Our proactive patrols and activity solved 163 per cent more shoplifting cases this year than last.' Holiday Inn was approached for comment. Liberty, John Lewis and New West End Company which represents shops all declined to comment. 7 7

One Day in Southport review — a horrifying portrait of Britain in 2024

I am often dubious about giving more airtime to murderous, attention-seeking lowlifes such as Axel Rudakubana, the Southport child killer. But one early image from Dan Reed's weighty documentary, One Day in Southport (Channel 4), summed up the utter coward. A taxi driver's dashcam footage showed him in a green hoodie and face mask trying to get through a door bearing the words 'pregnancy', 'yoga' and 'baby classes'. Wow, what a brave man, eh? What a warrior's legacy: walking into a community hub marked 'baby classes' and knifing little girls who are making friendship bracelets. An abundance of CCTV, mobile phone and dashcam footage helped to make this film, about this atrocity and the UK riots it sparked, sharply immersive. From the killer in the back of a taxi, sullenly asking 'Is this 34A Hart Street?' before commencing his mass-stabbing, to wobbly, close-up footage of rioters attacking police vehicles as someone shouts 'Set the van on fire!' and others smashing the windows of small terraced houses, there was a visceral, menacing feel to it, as if you too were there amid the baying mob. Reed, an award-winning director behind, among others, Leaving Neverland and One Day in October, chose to focus on YouTubers and others filming from within rather than the mainstream media filming from without. This gave it a more urgent, intimidating quality. 'You get what you deserve when you're protecting a f***ing mosque,' screamed one person, misinformed by social media, like so many others, that the killer was Muslim and had come here on a boat. 'I know he was born in Wales and all that, but he was of Rwandan heritage,' one interviewee said. Wendell Daniel, who is black and a videographer for Tommy Robinson, insisted this wasn't about race but about class. But Wesley Winter, a YouTuber born to British and Korean parents, seemed to take a different view. When filming riots in Middlesbrough, he was told by a masked man: 'If you're not white you can't go through.' His wife, who is Chinese, meanwhile, was sitting in their car being terrorised by rioters who she thought were going to drag her out and beat her. • Read more TV reviews, guides about what to watch and interviews I'm sure we can all remember the attack on a hotel housing immigrants, with rioters shouting 'Come out and fight like men'. But the film, skilfully woven and without a narrator, portrayed a sense of a country that was already a tinderbox, simmering with rage over immigration, the massacre of those little girls, the spark that detonated it: 'This is the consequence of not listening to the people.' It ended, without comment, with a clip of Keir Starmer's reference to 'an island of strangers'. In years to come this and other films may be studied as a bellwether of British unrest in summer 2024 and afterwards. But it is still the contributions of a quietly spoken young victim who survived the stabbings and her parents that were the most unforgettable. Whose stomach did not lurch when the girl's father (all of their identities protected) said a paramedic cut off her bloodied hoodie and 'it just looked like her muscles were inside out'? Dear god. The blade had fractured her spine and punctured her lung. Imagine the ferocity of that attack, one so vicious it left poor little Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Elsie Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, dead. The girl in the film said she had to have a special chair at school now because the normal ones dig into her scars. What spirit and courage she has shown; what an important documentary.★★★★☆ Love TV?
