Beloved Community Reindeer Dies After Mysterious Assaults
Star, an eight-year-old reindeer who was revered by its Anchorage community, began to lose weight and exhibit startling health issues after the unidentified aggressor gained access to the animal's quarters in January, the Associated Press reported. Since the 1960s, it's been a tradition in Anchorage for the town to house a reindeer in the public center.On Feb. 20, the person returned and opened Star's cage and released the animal. Star's owner, Albert Whitehead, told Alaska Public Media that the reindeer was found wandering the streets of Anchorage after likely following the intruder from the stall. When he reviewed security footage, Whitehead was astonished to see the person using bolt cutters to free Star.
The following night, Whitehead was watching the surveillance footage when the person once again arrived, this time hitting Star twice in the face with an unknown substance. Whitehead left his house to confront the attacker. 'I yelled at him to stop, 'What the hell are you doing? What are you spraying on the animal? Don't do that, quit that!' ' Whitehead said. 'I'm trying to help Star,' the intruder allegedly replied.
'I have no idea what they meant by that,' Whitehead admitted.Following the Feb. 20 incident, Star began experiencing digestion issues and extreme weight loss and came down with pneumonia. On April 1, Whitehead made the difficult decision to euthanize Star. 'His health was so bad that he was not doing very well,' Whitehead said. 'He was suffering…Suddenly he relapsed, and some other issues developed. So [I] really don't know what caused him to die. The vets now are going through a necropsy with him, and we won't have a result of that for a couple [of] weeks.'
'I think [we did] everything possible for him,' Whitehead added.
No arrests have been made in the incident, but Anchorage police are circulating the security footage to see if any residents can identify the intruder. When asked if Anchorage's public reindeer tradition would continue after Star's death, Whitehead didn't mince words. 'Would you be willing to put another animal into that enclosure, knowing there's somebody out there that [was] doing this kind of stuff to him?' he asked.

Authorities were scouring a mountainous area of western Montana on Saturday for a military veteran who they say opened fire at a bar, killing four people. Michael Paul Brown, 45, fled the Owl Bar in the small town of Anaconda in a white pickup truck but ditched it at some point, said Lee Johnson, administrator of the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, which is overseeing the case. He urged residents late Friday to stay at home and on high alert. 'While law enforcement has not received reports of Brown harming any other individuals, he is believed to be armed, and he is extremely dangerous,' Johnson said. Authorities said they would release the names of the victims once all of their families have been notified. 'This is a small, tight-knit community that has been harmed by the heinous actions of one individual who does not represent what this community or Montanans stand for,' Johnson said. Anaconda, about 25 miles northwest of Butte, is hemmed in by mountains. The town of about 9,000 people was founded by copper barons who profited off nearby mines in the late 1800s. A defunct smelter stack looms over the valley. Brown lived next door to the Owl Bar, said owner David Gwerder, who wasn't there during the shooting Friday morning. Gwerder told the Associated Press that the bartender and three patrons were killed and he didn't think anyone else was inside. He also said he wasn't aware of any conflicts between Brown and any of the victims. 'He knew everybody that was in that bar. I guarantee you that,' Gwerder said. 'He didn't have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped.' Brown served in the U.S. Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005 and deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005, said Lt. Col. Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. Brown was in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009, Castro said. He left military service in the rank of sergeant. Brown's niece, Clare Boyle, told the AP on Friday that her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years and that she and her other family members repeatedly sought help. 'This isn't just a drunk/high man going wild,' she wrote in a Facebook message. 'It's a sick man who doesn't know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn't know where or when he is either.' With no sign of Brown in the white pickup or his home, authorities converged on the Stumptown Road area west of Anaconda by ground and air Friday, locking it down. A helicopter hovered over a nearby mountainside as officers moved among the trees, said Randy Clark, a retired police officer who lives there. The search continued Saturday morning, according to Chase Scheuer, a spokesman for Montana's DCI. As reports of the shooting spread through town Friday, business owners locked their doors and sheltered inside with customers. The owner of the Firefly Cafe in Anaconda said she locked up her business after a friend alerted her to the shooting. 'We are Montana, so guns are not new to us,' Barbie Nelson said. It wasn't surprising to see that Brown didn't have his back, as these two certainly aren't the best of friends. Arenas mocked Brown for celebrating his arrest, and you can expect these two to keep firing shots at each other. This is the third time that Arenas has landed himself in serious trouble with the law. There was, of course, the infamous gun incident that eventually led to him serving two days in jail and 30 days in a halfway house in 2010. Sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson arrested for incident at Washington airport involving boyfriend
Reigning 100-meter world champion Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Richardson was charged Sunday with fourth degree domestic violence, according to the police report obtained by The Associated Press. On Thursday, she ran in the opening round the women's 100 meters at U.S. track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. She has an automatic bye to the world championships in September in Tokyo as the defending champion.
