During the Apollo missions, NASA operated out of an abundance of caution to ensure that astronauts didn't track back by planet-threatening microorganisms from the Moon. However, the conditions on Earth might be more dangerous to human life in one specific way. A study by the University of Technology Sydney published last month found that moon dust was far less toxic to our pulmonary system than the air pollution someone would encounter in a city.
The study suggests that inhaling moon dust won't cause long-term damage to our airways. Tests showed lunar material didn't trigger significant oxidative stress to lung cells, dissuading the fears provoked by the uncomfortable experiences of Apollo astronauts and other NASA personnel after the missions from a half-century ago. Now, if you're in the exclusive club of scientists with access to powdered lunar regolith, I wouldn't whip out your I.D. badge to start snorting lines of moon dust for a laugh. Michaela B. Smith, lead researcher and Ph.D student, said:
"Any dust, if you inhale it, you'll sneeze, cough, and have some physical irritation. But it's not highly toxic like silica, where you end up with silicosis from being on a construction site for 10 years. It's not going to be something like that."

The researchers emphasized the critical difference between mechanical damage and toxicity. Moon dust is still infamously abrasive. The study noted the irregular shape and rough edges of the dust. According to Space.com, statically-charged lunar dust would stick to space suits during Apollo's moon walks. This became a serious issue when astronauts returned to the Lunar Module. Once inside, the dust would sting the crew's eyes, cause a sore throat and sneezing. The same thing would happen once the flight surgeon unpaced the suit back on Earth.
This new research will be used for Artemis III, NASA's first crewed return to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. The mission is still scheduled for 2027 after numerous delays caused by development issues. However, the entire program has been jeopardized by the Trump administration's funding cuts and cancellation of the SLS rocket program. If Artemis continues, there are plans for a permanent human presence on the surface. Without the looming threats of long-term health issues, NASA could use moon dust to build its base on the surface.

The reconciliation bill making its way through Congress includes cuts to Medicaid that are so massive that even some Republicans have criticized them. In a remarkable address Sunday in the Senate, Sen. Thom Tillis asked his GOP colleagues what he should tell his fellow North Carolinians who lose health care coverage. 'What do I tell 663,000 people in two years, three years,' he asked, 'when President Trump breaks his promise by pushing them off of Medicaid because the funding's not there anymore?' But the toll is even worse than lost coverage. These cuts will cost more than 51,000 people their lives every year. That's not hyperbole. It's a predictable result when you cut off health insurance to people who are old, poor and sick. And it's based on analyses and projections from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard and Yale. Medicaid insures 1 in 5 Americans, typically low-income and often disabled. The latest version of the bill in front of the Senate includes more than $1 trillion in proposed cuts to the Medicaid program over 10 years. If enacted, these cuts would be the largest in Medicaid's 58-year history and would harm the health of millions. Consider one deeply vulnerable group of 13 million Americans, known as dual-eligible individuals because they rely on both Medicare and Medicaid. These people automatically get subsidies that lower the cost of their medications. When they lose Medicaid, they lose access to low-cost drugs, increasing the likelihood that chronic conditions go untreated. Using Medicare data on dual-eligible individuals, we calculated the effects of losing drug subsidies on beneficiaries' mortality. Based on this research, we estimated that 18,200 dual-eligible individuals would die each year from the loss of Medicaid coverage. Among the hardest hit would be those with chronic conditions like HIV, heart disease and lung disease. The harms will not stop there. The bill proposes to add a work requirement for most nonelderly adults within Medicaid and would also end enhanced premium tax credits that lower the cost of individual plans on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace. Drawing on research about the effects of gaining Medicaid and marketplace coverage, our colleagues at Yale estimated that over 20,000 people would die annually due to projected coverage losses from these provisions of the bill. The budget bill also will delay for a decade the new rule for minimum staffing at nursing homes that would improve quality of care. Based on studies of the relationship between nurse staffing hours and resident mortality, our colleagues at Penn project another 13,000 deaths per year among residents. Medicaid funding cuts will force governors and state legislators to make politically unpalatable decisions, because states, unlike the federal government, must balance their budgets every year. States will likely be forced to curtail benefits or install policies that limit the amount of time individuals can receive Medicaid. Hospitals, clinics and other caregivers will suffer as well with rural and urban facilities bearing the brunt, forcing them to trim operations or close altogether. A full accounting of these impacts won't be known for several years as they depend on how states adjust over time to funding cuts. Therefore, the full effects of Medicaid cuts could be even more extensive than current forecasts of coverage loss and mortality suggest. What can be done to reduce unnecessary Medicaid loss? Halting the proposed cuts would be a start. There is evidence that Medicaid expansions are cost-effective by improving the long-term health of many people. While several Republican lawmakers who have criticized the Medicaid cuts still plan to vote for the legislation, there is still time for them to use their leverage to amend the bill. Another place to look is Medicaid's onerous application process. Many people cycle on and off Medicaid for bureaucratic reasons like lost or incorrect paperwork rather than improving finances. Analysts have identified ways states can reduce these burdens, including streamlining asset tests and making Medicaid enrollment automatic for individuals receiving income-based programs. Unfortunately, the tax bill will move policy in the opposite direction — adding or preserving administrative hurdles that prevent individuals who need Medicaid from getting coverage. For example, the proposal to introduce a Medicaid work requirement would add bureaucratic red tape and make it harder for people to remain on Medicaid — even for those who are working and meet eligibility criteria. In 2018, for instance, Arkansas instituted work requirements for its Medicaid program until a federal judge's ruling the following year put them on hold. Research found that the requirements did not increase employment but instead led to coverage losses because of difficulty reporting their employment status to the state. The tax bill also proposes to delay until at least 2035 a Biden-era Medicaid rule to streamline Medicaid eligibility and renewals for dual-eligible individuals. Currently, most dual-eligible individuals must fill out more than 15 pages of forms to document their income and assets. This complexity can make it especially hard to keep Medicaid for people with cognitive impairment. Delaying this rule would result in 1.3 million fewer low-income Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in Medicaid by 2034, the Congressional Budget Office estimated. Although policymakers say they don't intend to cut coverage for older adults and people with disabilities, what is clear is that the bill's funding reductions and its changes to Medicaid enrollment policies are unlikely to spare this vulnerable population. As the budget bill moves through Congress, policymakers must consider the repercussions that steep Medicaid cuts will have and whether Medicaid-eligible individuals keep the coverage they need. NASA is bringing live NASA+ programming to Netflix. For the uninitiated, NASA+ is the space agency's very own streaming platform. Content will begin showing up later this summer. This will be reserved for live events, with NASA saying it'll be used to stream "rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, mission coverage and breathtaking live views of Earth from the International Space Station." NASA+ also streams original documentaries, but it doesn't look like that's part of this deal. 'The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience,' said Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+. She went on to say that the agency is committed to inspiring new generations "right from the comfort of their couch or in the palm of their hand from their phone." This won't be reserved for US residents, as NASA says it'll be available throughout the globe. This should expand the agency's reach significantly because Netflix has over 300 million subscribers all over the planet. NASA+ isn't going anywhere. Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: A fast radio burst (FRB) was detected coming from near-Earth orbit, which is unusually close considering the closest known FRB was detected tens of thousands of light-years away. It turned out that the signal came from a satellite that had been decommissioned in the late 1960s after its instruments broke down. What triggered the electrostatic discharge that caused the signal is still uncertain, but investigating further could help us figure out how to prevent damage to live spacecraft. Space is chock-full of mysterious signals. While most come from natural cosmic phenomena, one recent fast radio burst (FRB) had all the markings of advanced technology, which baffled scientists until they traced it back to a surprising source: our own space junk. The accumulation of human junk has gone beyond Earth's landfills. Orbiting our planet is an entire cosmic dumpster of space garbage, from the 23,000-ish larger pieces of refuse, such as decommissioned satellites, to over 100 million stray fragments of metal and glass and whatever else is flying around. Satellites that retire are deorbited into a graveyard orbit within 25 years of their missions ending. This is the case with NASA's Relay 2 satellite, which took off in 1964 until its transponders glitched. It hung dead in near-Earth orbit by 1967 and has beamed nothing down since—until now. Instead, something triggered it to send a FBR so fast it was gone in a nanosecond, to the surface, which was then picked up by the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Astronomer Clancy James and his research team found the source coming just 4,500 km (about 2,796 miles) from Earth. This meant that it couldn't possibly have issued from a neutron star, magnetar or zombie galaxy. When the researchers tracked it to Relay 2, they figured something must have been interacting with the Apollo-era relic. 'The charging of spacecraft in orbit due to interactions with the space environment has been a well-known phenomena since the early days of the space program,' the scientists said in a study recently accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters and posted on ArXiv. 'Accumulation of electrons and ions can lead to large voltage differentials between spacecraft surfaces, and between the spacecraft and space plasmas.' The most likely culprits? Electrostatic discharge (ESD) or plasma discharge caused by a collision with a rogue micrometeoroid. Spacecraft that are still alive and carrying out their missions need to be designed to avoid hazardous ESD currents. That still doesn't make spacecraft totally immune. Most don't have onboard monitors to detect levels of charge buildup, and that buildup usually isn't detected until after damage has been done. This is why scientists have proposed that ground-based radio monitors watch for ESD, but no system is yet capable of simultaneously observing large numbers of spacecraft. On June 13, 2024, ASKAP caught the FRB from Relay 2 using its Commensal Realtime ASKAP Transients Survey (CRAFT) detection system. FRBs are so powerful that they take only milliseconds to emit the radio energy of 500 million suns. They can travel anywhere from millions to billions of light-years through the void of space, with the closest one coming from a magnetar in our galaxy that is 30,000 light-years away. This is why finding an FRB so close to Earth threw James off until he found it originated from Relay 2. While this FRB could have been set off by a micrometeoroid, which can also produce radio emissions, James thinks it is more likely the signal was the result of electrostatic discharge. The electrons and ions accumulated by satellites can eventually reach a high enough voltage to release discharge. ESD is already known to cause radio frequency pulses. Such a powerful burst as an FRB was unexpected, and the researchers have yet to find what exactly the trigger was. Future investigations could help them figure out ways to protect live spacecraft. 'When sufficient voltage is achieved, electrostatic discharge (ESD) occurs, typically be- tween nearby surfaces/materials on the spacecraft. ESD does not depend on the operational nature of the spacecraft,' the scientists said. 'So ESD from a satellite decommissioned 60 years ago is entirely plausible.'
