Google settles a major antitrust lawsuit – but it's not the one making headlines

Phone Arena02-06-2025
While all eyes are on Google's high-stakes legal battle with the U.S. Department of Justice over its alleged search monopoly, the company just quietly resolved a different, yet equally significant, legal headache.
Today, Google's parent company agreed to a $500 million compliance overhaul to settle a shareholder lawsuit accusing the company of failing to prevent antitrust violations. The case, filed on behalf of the company by investors, targeted top executives including CEO Sundar Pichai and co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Unlike the DOJ's broader attempt to potentially break up Google's search business, this lawsuit focused on internal governance failures. Shareholders alleged that Alphabet's leadership ignored growing antitrust risks tied to its core businesses, including Search, Ad Tech, Android, and app distribution. They claimed the company's board failed to act on red flags, exposing Alphabet to regulatory consequences that might have been avoided with stronger oversight. As part of the settlement, Alphabet has committed to major structural changes. The company will establish a standalone risk and compliance committee at the board level, separate from its audit group. A new senior vice president role will be created to oversee compliance, reporting directly to Pichai. Additionally, a compliance committee made up of product managers and internal experts will be embedded within Google's teams to monitor and address regulatory issues. These reforms must remain in place for at least four years.
— Google spokesperson, June 2nd, 2025 Despite denying any wrongdoing, Google said it was 'happy to make these commitments' in order to avoid prolonged litigation. Shareholders will not receive direct compensation, but their legal team is expected to seek up to $80 million in attorney fees, in addition to the $500 million Alphabet has agreed to spend on compliance efforts over the next decade. It is important to note that this settlement does not mark the end of Google's legal troubles. Just hours after the deal was disclosed, Judge Amit Mehta wrapped up hearings in the DOJ's major antitrust case, which could result in drastic remedies such as forcing Google to divest Chrome or share search data with competitors. A ruling is expected by August.
From my perspective, 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most challenging years yet for Big Tech. Google and Apple are under increasing pressure as regulators around the world push back against their dominance. This settlement may signal Alphabet's willingness to evolve, but it also highlights the mounting scrutiny tech giants continue to face.

New Pixel 10 leak demonstrates that Google is in love with gray

Image credit — Evan Blass You might have heard that before, but the Pixel 10 series has leaked again. This time, we have a set of what look like final marketing renders of the Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Buds Pro 2. The images, leaked by famed leaker Evan Blass, show most of the Pixel 10 devices in Google's new favorite shade. That would be the Moonstone color, which looks like a light tone of gray and may be Pixel 10 's featured color. Technically, the gray color of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 may be called 'Sterling,' but they still line up very well next to the rest of Google's products. The only non-gray piece in the newly leaked images is a slimmer band of the Pixel Watch 4 , which also appears with another Moonstone from this set of renders are the vanilla Pixel 10 and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. While the former may be offered in a much brighter palette, we've already seen the Moonstone version of the foldable in previous leaks. Considering Evan Blass' reputation, those are likely real renders that Google might use after the August 20 premiere of the Pixel 10 series. They also make it even more obvious that this year's updates may be focused mainly on software and under-the-hood improvements. The Pixel 10 series is expected to use Tensor G5 chipsets, which would be a pivotal moment for Google. That's rumored to be the first fully in-house designed chip by the company, produced on TSMC's advanced 3nm process. With it, Google joins Apple and Samsung in designing its own silicon, which could lead to an improvement in the Pixel's performance. However, we need to wait for the devices to be released to see if they can challenge the upcoming iPhone 17 series and the Galaxy S25. In terms of colors, Google isn't breaking any new ground. The Moonstone of most Pixels is dull, but that's true for the colors of Apple and Samsung's premium flagships as well. What I'd like to see are Pro devices in at least a little more exciting colors. Until then, I'll need to stick to my mustard yellow case.

More Google Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Buds 2a images leak

Another day, another Pixel leak. This time, we're getting some leaked promo images showing the Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Buds 2a, all in the same Moonstone colorway. With these images, we can safely assume that Moonstone will be this year's 'hero' color for the upcoming Pixel lineup. It's definitely a grayish hue, but perhaps a tad more complex than you'd expect by just reading that. Google Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL newly leaked images The color matching between all these devices is interesting, and while the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold are missing from this set of leaked images, previous leaks have shown the latter clad in Moonstone as well. The 'vanilla' Pixel 10 model interestingly loses out on the hero color train, which is a weird decision to say the least. Google Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Buds 2a leaked images Then again, it's not the only one. While Google has finally given the entry-level non-a-series Pixel a telephoto camera, it's rumored to have made the other two cameras on the rear worse - perhaps as a way to ensure it doesn't really compete with the Pro despite having the same types of cameras included? We don't know, but the Pixel 10 will definitely be the odd one out this year, unless there is also a surprise Moonstone colorway for it, that just hasn't been leaked yet. We'll let you know if we find out more before the Pixel 10 lineup's August 20 unveiling. Source
