Central African Republic U20 profile: Underdogs with a point to prove in Egypt

CAF23-04-2025
The Central African Republic will return to the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations with a sense of unfinished business and growing confidence.
After reaching the quarter-finals in 2021 and participating again in 2023, the Fauves U20 are determined to build on past experiences and surprise the continent once again.
Grouped in a tough Pool C alongside reigning champions Senegal, four-time winners Ghana and an ambitious DR Congo side, the Central Africans are considered outsiders. But with a blend of resilience, emerging talent, and a fearless approach, they are preparing to defy expectations.
Their route to the finals was unconventional. After finishing as semi-finalists in the 2024 UNIFFAC qualifiers, they earned their spot following the suspension of the Congolese Football Federation. Now, under the guidance of coach Bruce Stéphane Abdoulaye, the CAR U20s are eager to make the most of this opportunity on African football's youth stage.
Full profile is below:
CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC
The Central African Republic will be one of the attractions of the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 AFCON.
The Central African country, whose age-group teams are increasingly asserting themselves on the continental scene, will present themselves with the firm ambition of creating a surprise.
HOW THEY QUALIFIED
The Central African Republic qualified following the suspension of the Congolese Football Federation by FIFA for state interference in the country's football activities.
Finalists of the UNIFFAC U-20 Tournament, which they hosted from September 24 to October 3, 2024, the U-20 Red Devils were to represent the UNIFFAC zone alongside the DRC, winner of the qualifiers.
But their suspension benefits the Central Africans whom they had beaten in the semi-finals of the qualifiers. Housed in Pool A, the Fauves U-20 will play alongside Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ghana.
HISTORY IN THE TOTALENERGIES CAF U-20 AFCON
The Central African Republic discovered the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 during the edition held in Mauritania.
It was a historic qualification since this team, coached by Sébastien Ngato, became the very first Central African team to represent the country in the finals of an Africa Cup of Nations. For a first participation, the Central African Juniors did not disappoint, as they reached the quarter-final stage.
The team will qualify for a second consecutive edition in 2023 in Egypt but will not go further than the group stage.
By presenting itself this year in a third consecutive edition, the country will try to build on its previous experiences to improve its results.

With the new trophy, the Women's Africa Cup of Nations enters a new era

A golden glow illuminated Casablanca on July 2, 2025. In the elegant setting of Hotel Casablanca, CAF unveiled the new TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy. In front of the cameras and bright lights to the applause of legends of African Women's Football including Amanda Dlamini, Ajara Njoya and Lamia Boumehdi, an entire continent witnessed the birth of a new icon. A testament to the ambitions, struggles and rise of the women's game that now refuses to be marginalized. A visual shock, a collective thrill Inside the room, ear-to-ear smiles and a loud respectful silence swept across with a feeling anew. It was a powerful moment. An unforgettable experience. And the word on everyone's lips was - emotion. For it was not just a trophy that was presented, but the reflection of a struggle. That of football that has long had to justify itself, convince, and exist despite everything. That of the women who laced up their boots when no one believed in them. This Wednesday, they were celebrated. Amanda Dlamini, former captain of the Banyana Banyana, now a TV consultant, did not hide her enthusiasm: "When I started, we played to exist. Today, young people play to win. This trophy is the symbol of this transition. The dream continues, but it is now within reach." A dream with golden contours, proud lines and African roots. A trophy designed to last, to inspire, to become a desire. A desire to brandish it, to include it in their legacy, to offer it to their nations. Present and radiant, Cameroonian striker Ajara Njoya did not mince her words. "It is an evolution. The vision CAF is bringing to us today is excellent for Women's Football. It opens a lot. I remember when I started out; there was a lot of resistance around me. Today, parents are pushing their daughters to play football." Attitudes are changing. The trophy, in its symbolism, embodies this change. It is both recognition of pioneers and a call to newcomers. Those who dream, with the ball at their feet, of trophies and flags raised. A trophy designed to last The deliberately modern design combines simplicity and power. It reveals a desire to break new ground without going away from heritage. The curves recall momentum - a collective movement. The gold touch evokes excellence. The whole concept exudes an almost regal solemnity, as if Africa is finally saying to its queens: "You deserve your rightful place." Lamia Boumehdi, coach of TP Mazembe and the first African coach to win the CAF Women's Champions League, also welcomed the evolution. "This trophy is not just a cup. It is a symbol. A recognition." It is also a burden, a responsibility. We shall have to rise to the occasion." TotalEnergies: A partner that believes in the female spirit Abdesslam Rhnimi, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing Morocco, made no secret of his pride: "This trophy is also the result of a lasting commitment. At TotalEnergies, we believe in the transformative power of Women's Football. We want to support this momentum, in Morocco and throughout Africa." This partnership is part of a long-term investment approach. It goes beyond the visibility of a logo. It is about building, with CAF, a competition worthy of African ambitions. To make it a continental showcase, a platform for both sporting and social expression.

D-2 before the Women's AFCON: 50,000 Hearts Beating as One in Rabat

Published: Thursday, 03 July 2025 The countdown is in full swing as the TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2024, draws near. To mark the 13th edition of the competition, is revisiting iconic moments that have defined the tournament's rich history. With just two days to go, we look back on an unforgettable evening — the record-breaking final of the 2022 edition at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. The TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in just 2 days. On 23 July 2022, Morocco faced South Africa in the final of 'its' WAFCON, in a charged, electric atmosphere. A crowd of 50,000 packed the stands — an unprecedented turnout in the history of African women's football. Never before had a WAFCON final drawn such a massive audience inside a single stadium. 'What I experienced that night is something I will never forget. The energy from the crowd, the songs, the flags… It was beautiful, it was powerful,' recalled Atlas Lionesses captain Ghizlane Chebbak, who was later named Player of the Tournament. That evening, 50,000 hearts beat in unison, driven by the hope of seeing Morocco claim its first continental title. Under the guidance of Reynald Pedros, the Moroccan side had already made history by becoming the first North African nation to reach the WAFCON final. But standing in their way were the determined Banyana Banyana of South Africa, led by Hildah Magaia and head coach Desiree Ellis, also eyeing a maiden crown. What followed was a gripping, hard-fought contest. In the end, it was South Africa who emerged victorious, edging Morocco 2-1 thanks to a brace from Magaia. Despite the heartbreak, Morocco walked away from the tournament with pride. The team had proven that women's football could rally entire nations, ignite emotion, and inspire lasting change. 'What we witnessed in 2022 went beyond football. It was a movement — a celebration of women's football, a turning point for our continent,' Desiree Ellis said after the final. As the 2024 edition approaches, the image of a packed stadium in Rabat still echoes across African football. It stands as a powerful reminder that WAFCON has entered a new era — driven by passionate fans, inspiring players, and unstoppable momentum for recognition and growth. Morocco is ready to write a new chapter.
