Paris Olympics and Paralympics cost taxpayer nearly 6 bn euros: state body - Omni sports

Al-Ahram Weekly23-06-2025
The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics and Paralympics cost the French state just under 6 billion euros ($6.9 billion), the national audit body announced in an "initial estimate" on Monday.
The organisation of the two sporting extravaganzas last summer cost 2.77 billion euros, which included 1.4 billion euros for security.
A further 3.19 billion euros was spent on work linked to infrastructure projects.
The Olympics ran from July 26 to August 11, while the Paralympics took place from August 28 to September 8, with organisers making the most of historic sites in central Paris, either as venues or the backdrop to the events.
The Games were widely hailed as highly successful.
The national audit body said there would be a "heightened interest" in the figures because France is also preparing to host the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps.
It is the first time actual figures have been announced, although the president of the national audit body, Pierre Moscovici, had in 2024 said they would cost the state "three, maybe four, five billion euros".
Moscovici, a former French finance minister and European Union Commissioner, added that the real costs would only be known at the end of the Games.
Until now only the costs of the local organising committee (COJO) of 4.4 billion euros, which represented a surplus of 76 million euros, have been made public.
That figure came almost exclusively from private financing and from Solideo, the body responsible for delivering Olympic construction projects, which was in part publicly financed.
A more detailled report will be published in October as other costs are not yet known.
The body added that because of a lack of concrete information the figures did not include "the positive and negative impact the Games had on economic activity".
It said however that the Games were "indisputably a success with the public and the media".
Another report on the legacy of the Games will be published in 2026.

ICESCO Holds Training Session in Strategic Foresight, AI

Mohamed Mandour The Center for Foresight and Artificial Intelligence at the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) concluded, in Tunis, its training session, 'Introduction to Strategic Foresight and Artificial Intelligence.' The session was organized in cooperation with the Tunisian National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, and the Tunisian National Center for Educational Technologies. The event reflects the Organization's commitment to promoting a culture of forward thinking in its Member States, anticipating future events, and fostering innovation in governance and educational systems. The session targeted directors and officials from the Tunisian Ministry of Education, pursuant to a memorandum of understanding signed in February 2025 between ICESCO and the Tunisian National Center for Educational Technologies. The MoU provides for equipping specialists with a solid foundation in foresight concepts and methodologies and introducing them to the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in policy planning and educational reform. The three-day session was supervised by Dr. Kais Hammami, Head of ICESCO's Center for Strategic Foresight and Artificial Intelligence. Participants benefited from practical sessions and group exercises which focused on exploring the concepts of strategic foresight, highlighting its basic principles and tools, conducting scenario-building exercises, and designing flexible and adaptable strategies by using real data and analyzing emerging trends to envision the future. In addition, the session cast light on the intersections between foresight and AI by exploring the nature of their relationship and how to rely on AI tools to draw accurate and realistic future scenarios. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Trump says incoming pharma tariff may go as high as 250% - Economy

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that upcoming tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals could reach 250 percent, after starting at a lower level, while adding he plans to also unveil fresh duties on foreign semiconductors. "We'll be putting (an) initially small tariff on pharmaceuticals, but in one year, one-and-a-half years, maximum, it's going to go to 150 percent," Trump said in an interview on CNBC. "And then it's going to go to 250 percent because we want pharmaceuticals made in our country," he added. In the same interview, Trump said he expects to raise the US tariff on Indian imports "very substantially over the next 24 hours" due to the country's purchases of Russian oil. While Trump has taken aim at products from different countries with varying tariff rates after imposing a 10-percent levy on almost all trading partners in April, these have excluded certain products he planned to target separately. These sector-specific tariffs have generally come after government investigations that look into the national security concerns surrounding certain imports. After earlier embarking on probes on imported semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, the Trump administration has signaled plans to wrap up these studies which could lead to new tariffs. Already, Trump has slapped steep tariffs of 50 percent on imported steel and aluminum, and also rolled out a separate but lower duty on autos and parts.
