GENEVA, Switzerland (Reuters) -A last-gasp equaliser by Portugal's Diana Gomes against Italy in a thrilling 1-1 draw kept her country's Women's Euro campaign alive as her strike cancelled out a stunning second-half goal by Cristiana Girelli on Monday.
Le Azzurre thought they were through to the quarter-finals after Girelli scored in the 70th minute, shifting the ball to her right foot at the edge of the box before unleashing a curling shot into the top right corner that goalkeeper Patricia Morais had little chance of stopping.
But Gomes brought Portugal level in the 89th when a corner hit the bar and the Portuguese worked the ball back into the box for Gomes to fire home, sending their raucous fans, who chanted and banged drums throughout the night, into utter delirium.
The draw spoiled Italy's chance of clinching a berth in the knockout round on Monday, with Spain the only Group B team to have so far guaranteed a quarter-final spot with their 6-2 win over Belgium in the earlier match.

Tennis-Sabalenka survives Siegemund spell to reach Wimbledon semis

Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 8, 2025 Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka celebrates after winning her quarter final match against Germany's Laura Siegemund REUTERS/Stephanie Lecocq LONDON (Reuters) -Aryna Sabalenka was dragged into a bygone era on Tuesday and tormented for almost three hours on Wimbledon's Centre Court before finally imposing her 21st-century power game to beat mesmeric Laura Siegemund for a place in the semi-finals. The Belarusian needed all her powers of ball bludgeoning and belief to emerge from a befuddling battle, somehow the victor, 4-6 6-2 6-4. For much of the spell-binding contest it looked as though the world number one would find no answers to Siegemund's sorcery as the 37-year-old German veteran chipped, chopped and drop-shotted the world's best player to pieces, leaving the top seed's power game neutered on the turf. Ranked a lowly 104 in the world, Siegemund drew on the game of a gentler age to bring low the mighty Belarusian, casting spells of slice and sleight with vintage flair. But slowly, if not exactly surely, the 10-years-younger and seemingly stronger Sabalenka managed to wrestle back the upper hand, and now awaits either 13th seed Amanda Anisimova or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a place in Saturday's final. Tennis-Fritz into Wimbledon semis after holding off Khachanov comeback

Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 8, 2025 Taylor Fritz of the U.S. celebrates winning his quarter final match against Russia's Karen Khachanov REUTERS/Isabel Infantes LONDON -Fifth seed Taylor Fritz reached the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time on Tuesday after coming through a topsy-turvy four-setter against Karen Khachanov where the American seemed to be cruising, but then had to show all his fighting spirit. Fritz, in fine grass form after wins in Stuttgart and Eastbourne, triumphed 6-3 6-4 1-6 7-6(4) must have thought he was in for an easier passage as he ripped through the first two sets giving up only seven points in his 10 service games. Russia's Khachanov, the 17th seed also seeking a first Wimbledon semi, then seemed to work out how to deal with the American's serve as he won eight of the next nine games to take the third set and move a break up in the fourth. Fritz, however, regrouped to immediately break back, regain control of his service games and triumphed in the decisive tiebreak. (Reporting by Mitch Phillips, editing by Ken Ferris)

Soccer-Wales team unharmed but cancel Euro 2025 training after bus crash

Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group D - Wales v Netherlands - Stadion Allmend, Lucerne, Switzerland - July 5, 2025 Wales' Hayley Ladd, Rachel Rowe and Kayleigh Barton look dejected after the match REUTERS/Matthew Childs (Reuters) -Wales coach Rhian Wilkinson said her players were shaken but otherwise fine after their bus crashed on the way to Stadion St Gallen for training on Tuesday ahead of their Women's Euro 2025 match against France. Wilkinson, who was in a separate vehicle along with skipper Angharad James, said that the well-being of her players was the priority ahead of Wednesday's game. "Yeah, football is secondary and I think, yes we are shaken because we are away from the team right now knowing that they've had to experience that," Wilkinson told a press conference. "But equally we have a great group and I have been assured that everyone is fine. We have practiced for the unexpected, that's what we can call this. "We will check in with everyone and make sure they are all in a good spot and we can focus on the football again after that. Our priority is to get them all together and away from the scene. We'll be checking in to make sure they all continue to be OK." Wilkinson said the crash happened near the team hotel. "All passengers on the Cymru National Team bus and in the other vehicle are unharmed," The Football Association of Wales said in a statement. "The FAW's priority has been to remove the players from the scene and return to the Cymru training base to complete their preparations for tomorrow's match." Wales, who are making their major tournament debut, lost 3-0 to the Netherlands on Saturday and are facing elimination when they play France on Wednesday. Wales face England in the final group game.
