Jodie Burrage rues rolled ankle en route to Wimbledon defeat
The 26-year-old has battled injuries over the last year but the wild card returned to Wimbledon in strong form following a series of encouraging results on grass.
However, the Brit revealed how an innocuous rolled ankle last Friday derailed her plans and ultimately contributed to 6-3 6-1 defeat to American Caty McNally.
Burrage was keen to credit her opponent, but was left frustrated with being knocked off course so close to the biggest date in the British tennis calendar.
'It wasn't my best performance at all,' she said. 'Caty played very well. She didn't give me much but I didn't really make her work for it how I wanted to today.
'My level today was shocking compared to how I've been playing the last few weeks. There are probably a few things going into that; wanting to do well this week at Wimbledon because I missed it last year and what happened on Friday.
'It shook me a little bit. The prep wasn't ideal coming into the match today. I had to make some adjustments. It's just disappointing that something happens like that at a tournament like this, but we did what we could today.
'Sometimes you just have a bad day at the office, and sometimes your opponent has a very good one.
'I just wanted more from myself. I know the work that I've put in, and I felt like I deserved a better outcome than that. It wasn't ideal the last few days what happened.'
Burrage struggled to ever really get going in the contest out on Court 18, which has a reputation for delivering a strong atmosphere.
The 26-year-old was cheered on by compatriot Sonay Kartal, who booked her place in the second round with victory over Jelena Ostapenko on Monday, as well as a number of friends and family.
'I know that I can just play so much better than that. I know I've got more in me than that,' she added. 'I would say disappointment when you have everyone here watching you.
'I have a lot of family members, friends. It's disappointing when you can't play how you want to play, and you feel like you've let them down a bit.
'They will not say that at all. They'll tell me how proud they are of me and stuff.
It's probably that that hurts the most. I guess it's not pressure, but that's what comes along with these events.'

Lewis Hamilton's struggles at the Belgian Grand Prix continued as he failed to make it out of Q1 in qualifying, with his engineer Riccardo Adami coming in for criticism Ferrari engineer Riccardo Adami has faced criticism for his approach towards Lewis Hamilton. It came as the Brit suffered a torrid weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix, which included two Q1 exits in both qualifying sessions held at the Formula 1 Sprint event at Circuit Spa-Francorchamps. Following a disappointing 15th-place finish in Saturday's sprint race, matters worsened for the seven-time F1 champion when he encountered difficulties during qualifying. Hamilton set a rapid lap in Q1, but his time was subsequently scrubbed from the records. He received a penalty for breaching track limits at the Raidillon corner, meaning he failed to progress to Q2. This left him just 16th on the timesheets before Ferrari confirmed hours before Sunday's race that Hamilton would start from the pit lane. Speaking over the radio, race engineer Adami seemed to display little compassion in the aftermath. When Hamilton enquired airwaves: "Is everything okay?" following his qualifying attempt, he received a curt response. "Track limits at turn four," came the blunt reply. After Hamilton questioned whether this meant he had been eliminated from Q1, the Italian responded: "Yeah. Lap time is deleted. P16." Sky Sports F1 reporter Ted Kravitz highlighted Adami's approach to that conversation as he discussed what had happened on his Ted's Notebook programme. He suggested that Hamilton's previous engineer at Mercedes, Peter Bonnington, would have managed the situation with greater sensitivity. 'Bono' worked with the Brit for more than a decade and the pair had a strong rapport, which is something Hamilton has yet to find with Adami. "Did you think it was a bit terse on the radio between him and Riccardo Adami, saying, 'Is there something wrong?" Kravitz said. "I don't know whether I expected a bit more empathy. To say, 'Ah, I'm sorry, Lewis. Bad luck, mate. You're out, hard one by, pal.' The kind of things Bono would have said." Hamilton, 40, made no effort to hide his frustration afterwards, offering an apology to both his team and supporters as his difficult 2025 campaign rolls on. I'm just really sorry to the team," he said. "Hard work with the filming day that we did, and all the preparation, and then you come here and don't make it through Q1. It's unacceptable. Really sorry." It is far from the first time the relationship between Hamilton and Adami has been questioned since his move to Ferrari. There were several examples of tense conversations between them over the radio earlier in the season which caused so much of a stir that the racer felt the need to speak publicly about how he is working with his new race engineer. He said: "We're constantly learning more and more about each other, we're constantly adapting to the way both of us like to work. There's a lot of speculation. I mean, most of it is BS. Ultimately, we have a great relationship. He's been amazing to work with, he's a great guy, working so hard – we both are – and we don't always get it right every weekend. We have disagreements, like everyone does in relationships, but we work through them."

Ferrari star Lewis Hamilton endured a difficult weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix but still took the time to offer consolation to another of his Formula 1 rivals who was also struggling Lewis Hamilton offered consolation to teenager Kimi Antonelli who continues to struggle in his debut Formula 1 season. The teenager began the year strongly but, since entering the European portion of the season, has looked a little lost and has struggled for form. Antonelli has failed to score across any of the six race weekends held in Europe so far this year, and failed to finish four of them. The other two saw the 18-year-old finish 18th in Monaco and, on Sunday, 16th at the end of a torrid Belgian Grand Prix weekend. Strangely, in the middle of those European races, Antonelli produced his best performance in F1 to date to secure his first podium, finishing third at the Canadian Grand Prix. But at Spa-Francorchamps after qualifying he was close to tears as he lamented his struggles. "Since the European season, I've been struggling to find confidence with the car," the teenager said. "I feel like I've done a backwards step. It's just a difficult moment for me – I feel like I have no confidence on pushing. Yesterday, I tried to push a bit too much and then I spun, and it kind of hurts the confidence even more. "We know the limitation we have since quite a lot, but with the way I'm driving, I'm just increasing the problem, and that gives me even less confidence with the car." Things did not get any better on Sunday as Antonelli struggled to make progress, having started from the pit lane with new engine components. Not only was he 16th at the end, but he was 14 seconds away from 10th place, the lowest points-paying position. In contrast, Hamilton had also started from the pit lane and found much more joy in his Ferrari, speeding up to finish seventh and 46 seconds up the road from the teenager who replaced him at Mercedes. But instead of celebrating his strong performance, the first thing the seven-time F1 champion did was approach Antonelli in parc ferme. It is not know what was said between them, but Hamilton could be seen offering consolation to the teenager. At 40 years old, the Brit is more than twice Antonelli's age and is driving for a direct rival team in Ferrari, but has spent time on several occasions offering his wisdom and experience to the struggling young Italian. Speaking about the youngster's struggles after the Belgium race, Hamilton said: "I can't imagine what it's like at 18, I can try to imagine what it's like at 18 to do what he's been doing. I think he's been doing fantastic, but to be thrown into the deep end at 18... he didn't even have his [road] driving licence when he started racing! "I think it's a lot on young shoulders, but he's doing a great job. He's got a great group of people around him, so I think he's just got to take it in his stride, which I think he is. "He's got Bono [Hamilton's old Mercedes race engineer Peter Bonnington] by his side – he couldn't have anyone better."
