Ministry finalising law to regulate museum activities
The law aims to create a clear legal framework for effective and sustainable museum management.
Aaron said the ministry envisions museums as transformative spaces that foster creativity, critical thinking and an appreciation for shared humanity, embodying inclusivity, accessibility, sustainability and diversity.
'We will work closely with the Museums Department to develop and implement strategies that align with these principles, enhancing accessibility, promoting inclusive narratives, implementing sustainable practices, and encouraging community participation in museum activities and decision-making processes,' he told Bernama during his opening speech at the Malaysia International Museum Day Seminar 2025 here yesterday.
Meanwhile, at a press conference, Museums Department director-general Datuk Kamarul Baharin A. Kasim said the proposed law includes the establishment of a Museum Council, which would serve as an advisory and supervisory body for the creation and operation of museum institutions nationwide.
He said that while the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645) addresses matters concerning heritage sites, monuments, and both tangible and intangible heritage, it does not comprehensively regulate overall museum policy.
'This law is being drafted in accordance with international standards and aims to introduce a rating system and regulate new, particularly private, museums that might present narratives conflicting with national policy.'
The International Museum Day Seminar 2025, themed 'The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,' was held in conjunction with International Museum Day.
The event drew around 300 participants.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Asean Foreign Ministers have urged Thailand and Cambodia to exercise maximum restraint and implement an immediate ceasefire over the ongoing border dispute between both countries. The ministers have reaffirmed their support for efforts by the Asean Chair to facilitate dialogue between both sides and bring an end to the fighting. The statement came ahead of a planned peace talks between Cambodia and Thailand scheduled for 3 pm Monday in Putrajaya. Cambodian Premier Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai separately confirmed yesterday that they would attend the highly anticipated meeting initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as current Asean Chair. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. PBTs Issue Nearly 15,000 Compounds Against Foreign-owned Business Premises
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Local authorities (PBTs) have issued a total of 14,834 compounds against business premises for various offences, including the illegal transfer of licences and permits to foreigners, since 2023, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said that the authorities have also sealed 2,880 premises and revoked 23 business licences. 'It must be stressed that the Ministry and PBTs have never allowed any foreign nationals to apply for or own hawker or small business licences, business premises, grocery stores, eateries, car workshops, or markets. 'PBTs also do not allow the hiring of foreigners as workers under hawker licences at their premises, as the MADANI Government is deeply committed to supporting Malaysians through business opportunities and ensuring the sustainability of the local traders' economy,' he said. He was responding to a question from Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor) regarding businesses being operated by foreigners in Malaysia, particularly in the retail sector, during the oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. Nga said existing policies and regulations, such as the Hawkers By-Laws and the Licensing of Trades, Businesses and Industries By-Laws, clearly stipulate that only Malaysian citizens are allowed to apply for business licences. At the same time, foreign nationals can only be hired if they hold a valid work pass or trade permit. He said PBTs carry out continuous enforcement and monitoring operations, including regular inspections of business premises and hawkers, particularly in areas with a high concentration of foreign nationals, as well as confiscating goods from foreign hawkers. Nga also said that the local authorities would revoke licences from those found to have misused their permits, stressing that the conditions for new applications and business licences have been tightened, based on each state's jurisdiction, to curb the operations of foreign-owned businesses. In response to a supplementary question from Mohd Hasnizan regarding the ruse of using Malaysian spouses as proxies to open businesses, Nga said Malaysians must act responsibly and uphold the principles of the Rukun Negara.

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping met with European Union (EU) leaders at the 25th China-EU Summit in Beijing, marking 50 years of diplomatic relations and calling for deeper cooperation in trade, investment, and global governance. As reported by China Global Television Network Corporation (CGTN), the summit emphasised China's push for multilateralism, economic openness, and mutual respect as the guiding principles for future China-EU relations. During a meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing recently, President Xi told European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that China-EU relations have entered a critical historical juncture. Xi said there are no fundamental conflicts of interest or geopolitical contradictions between the two sides, stressing that cooperation remains the dominant feature of bilateral ties, according to CGTN in a statement. He proposed that both parties uphold mutual respect, pursue openness and cooperation while managing differences, and jointly safeguard multilateralism and the international rules-based order.
