Former Toledo city council member Mike Ferner chucks cow's blood on US mission in gory stunt, but New Yorkers were unfazed
A former Toledo, Ohio city council member chucked a paint can full of cow's blood onto the windows of the US mission to the UN this week in a gory stunt denouncing Israel, but passersby didn't seem to notice or care.
'It was not an easy job and there was blood all over the place, but as usual in New York people just walked by and said, 'Oh, that's interesting.' Nobody asked anything,' said Mike Ferner, 74, who spent Monday morning using a screwdriver to break up a gallon of frozen cow's blood on an East Village sidewalk.

'Here, United States, have some blood. You like shedding it all over the world so much? There ya go. How about some blood,' Ferner shouted after chucking a paint can of blood onto the windows of the Israel mission.
Ferner was promptly arrested after the 12:30 p.m. blood-hurling and charged with criminal tampering, unlawfully possessing or selling of a noxious material and disorderly conduct, according to a criminal complaint.
He and spent a night in jail, in conditions he compared to Guantanamo Bay or Abu Ghraib.
Ferner was released on his own recognizance following his Manhattan Criminal Court appearance the next day.
The Toledo politician is a renowned rabble-rouser who has been arrested multiple times as a member of Veterans for Peace, an organization whose mission is to 'end all wars,' according to their website.
Ferner's bloody protest served as the grand finale of the organization's '40 Day Fast for Gaza,' during which he was hospitalized for low potassium levels.

'It's so important for [Palestinians] to know not everybody in our government is a murderous psychopath,' Ferner said.
On Monday morning, Ferner stopped into a butcher shop in the East Village to pick up a gallon of cow's blood in a large plastic Coke bottle.
'It was completely frozen like a rock, and I thought 'God, what am I going to do with this?',' Ferner said. 'I asked them if they had a microwave, and they said no. Next door was a laundromat, and I asked if I could put in the dryer, and they said no.'
To melt down the Coke bottle of frozen blood, Ferner stepped out onto the sidewalk and began shaving it off into a paint can with a pocketknife.

'I had blood all over the place,' Ferner said. 'I was thinking if anybody asks me, I could tell them this is concentrated cherry juice that I'm trying to defrost, but nobody asked!'
Ferner borrowed two screwdrivers from a nearby construction crew, which he used to chip at the block of frozen blood.
'I just kept hacking away at it with a screwdriver, and it was a warm morning, and as I was doing that it slowly melted,' he said.

Slowly, it started to melt, so Ferner hopped into a cab and sped to the US mission. There, he chucked his paint can of melted blood onto the windows and was promptly arrested.
'There was a core of it that I didn't have time to chop up, and it didn't melt, so when I threw it on the window there was this small football [of frozen blood], and it was laying on the sidewalk. The cops said, 'What's that?' And I said, 'Well, that's just a part I couldn't defrost'.'
Ferner is pleased with the response to his stunt and said people around the world are responding to the video. He hopes the Israel and US missions will 'regain a piece of humanity' after his protest.
Ferner worked in an Illinois Navy hospital during the Vietnam War, and remembers planes full of injured soldiers arriving back home.
'I started seeing what happens to people when you go to war, it's not like the movies. It's not like John Wayne,' Ferner said.
Ferner has become a fan of the Big Apple and plans to spend his last few days in town riding the Staten Island Ferry and people watching in the East Village.

A United Nations report targeting Israel and companies that operate within the country entitled "Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide" is sparking backlash and concern. The report was authored and presented by U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese, a controversial figure who has been condemned by multiple nations for making allegedly antisemitic remarks. In her latest report, she calls for sanctions against "entities and individuals involved in activities that may endanger the Palestinians." She added that even though Albanese is an independent investigator, the report could be interpreted as the U.N. supporting the BDS movement against Israel. In the report, Albanese claims that corporations have aided Israel in "its ongoing genocidal campaign in Gaza." She repeated this claim at UNHRC on Thursday, charging Israel with being "responsible for one of the cruelest genocides in modern history." She also accused Israel of using the war in Gaza as a testing ground for new weapons "to exterminate a people without restraint." IAEA inspectors depart Tehran after US-Israel-Iran conflict
A team of inspectors from the United Nations' nuclear watchdog have left Iran, following Tehran's decision to suspend cooperation with the organisation after the 12-day conflict with Israel and the United States. In a statement posted on X on Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said its employees would return to its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi stressed 'the crucial importance' of holding talks with Iran to resume its monitoring and verification work as soon as possible, the post added. Al Jazeera's Resul Serdar, reporting from Tehran, said it was not clear what proportion of the IAEA staff left the country. 'Based on the language used, it is not clear if all or some of them left Iran, but we understand that some of them are still here,' he said. 'What we know is that they did not fly out; this departure happened through land into Armenia yesterday or the day before,' he added. 'And then they went to Vienna,' Serdar said, adding that the development has started an era of 'nuclear ambiguity' in Iran. The inspectors stayed in the Iranian capital throughout the recent fighting, which started on June 13 when Israel attacked Iranian military sites and killed a number of the country's most senior commanders, top scientists, and civilians. The US later became involved in the conflict, dropping bunker-buster bombs on nuclear facilities in Iran, in a mission the Trump administration claimed had significantly set back the country's nuclear programme. In the aftermath of the US and Israeli aerial attacks, Iran, which has said it is still committed to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), made painfully clear its burgeoning distrust of the IAEA. Since the start of the conflict, Iranian officials have sharply criticised the IAEA not only for failing to condemn the Israeli and US strikes, but also for passing a resolution on June 12 accusing Tehran of non-compliance with its nuclear obligations, the day before Israel attacked. On Wednesday, Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian ordered the country to cut ties with the nuclear watchdog. A bill to suspend cooperation had already been passed in the Iranian parliament and approved by the country's Guardian Council. Guardian Council spokesperson Hadi Tahan Nazif said the decision had been taken for the 'full respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran'. The bill itself says the suspension 'will remain in effect until certain conditions are met, including the guaranteed security of nuclear facilities and scientists', according to Iranian state television. On Monday, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi summarily dismissed Grossi's request to visit nuclear facilities bombed by Israel and the US. 'Grossi's insistence on visiting the bombed sites under the pretext of safeguards is meaningless and possibly even malign in intent,' Araghchi said, adding that 'Iran reserves the right to take any steps in defence of its interests, its people and its sovereignty.' The US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce called Iran's decision to suspend cooperation with the IAEA 'unacceptable', urging Tehran 'to reverse course and choose a path of peace and prosperity'. 'Iran cannot and will not have a nuclear weapon,' she reiterated. Tehran denies wanting to produce a nuclear bomb, reiterating for years that its nuclear programme is for civilian use only. Neither US intelligence nor Grossi said they had found any proof Tehran was building a nuclear weapon.
