Palestine envoy urges PH to ask Israel to resolve Gaza crisis
Palestine's Ambassador to the Philippines Mounir Anastas on Tuesday urged the Philippines to convince Israel to resolve the humanitarian crisis in war-torn Gaza.
Speaking to GMA Integrated News' Pia Arcangel, Anastas said the Philippines should ''apply some pressure'' so that Israel ''respects the humanitarian question in Gaza especially, and in the West Bank as well.''
''In any case, we are really thankful for the President and the government, since they made several statements asking for a ceasefire and for humanitarian aid to arrive in Gaza. So, the Philippines is doing its best,'' he said in a report on ''24 Oras.''
At the 2nd ASEAN–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit in Malaysia on May 27, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed concern over Israel's military operations across the Gaza Strip, "which have resulted in the continued rise of the death of civilians, including women and children, and further exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation on the ground."
Marcos said the Philippines urged all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law, ''with particular emphasis on the protection of civilians, especially women and children, and the facilitation of humanitarian assistance to all those who are in need.''
''Everybody was asking Israel for the ceasefire first and to allow the humanitarian aid to arrive to the population while Israel was using food and water as weapon,'' Anastas said.
''It is not only against international humanitarian law but it is also completely immoral, it is inhuman, it is unacceptable.''
Anastas also commented on the fighting between Israel and Iran.
"There's the question, why now? Why [did] Israel attack Iran right now, knowing that [for] decades [Israeli] Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu was always saying Iran was too close to having or possessing nuclear weapons?'' he said.
''The attack came only two days before the meeting scheduled between the US and Iran for the [nuclear] negotiations.''
Iran has always said its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
The war in Gaza has raged since 2023 after Hamas militants killed 1,200 people in Israel in an October 7 attack and took some 250 hostages back to the enclave, according to Israeli tallies. Many of those killed or captured were civilians.
Israel responded with a military campaign that has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.
Earlier this month, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly demanded an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in the war in Gaza and aid access.
The UN has long endorsed a vision of two states living side by side within secure and recognized borders. Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, all territory captured by Israel in a 1967 war with neighboring Arab states.
''Is it viable still? Yes, it is, even if it is weakened,'' Anastas said. ''There is a need to have a change within Israel with such a government. Of course, it wouldn't work since they declared very clearly they are opposed to such a solution.''
''Second thing, it's not only freezing the settlements, but also having the solution to take all settlers back to Israel,'' he said. — with Reuters/VBL, GMA Integrated News

Trump slams Israel's prosecutors over Netanyahu corruption trial
US President Donald Trump welcomes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the entrance of the White House in Washington, US, February 4, 2025. REUTERS/Leah Millis/File photo President Donald Trump on Saturday lashed out at prosecutors in Israel over the corruption trial that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced, saying Washington, having given billions of dollars worth of aid to Israel, was not going to "stand for this". Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 in Israel on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust – all of which he denies. The trial began in 2020 and involves three criminal cases. "It is INSANITY doing what the out-of-control prosecutors are doing to Bibi Netanyahu," Trump said in a Truth Social post, adding that the judicial process was going to interfere with Netanyahu's ability to conduct talks with Palestinian militants Hamas, and Iran. Trump's second post over the course of a few days defending Netanyahu and calling for the cancellation of the trial went a step further to tie Israel's legal action to US aid. "The United States of America spends Billions of Dollar [sic] a year, far more than on any other Nation, protecting and supporting Israel. We are not going to stand for this," Trump said. Netanyahu "right now" was in the process of negotiating a deal with Hamas, Trump said, without giving further details. On Friday, the Republican president told reporters that he believes a ceasefire is close. Hamas has said it is willing to free remaining hostages in Gaza under any deal to end the war, while Israel says it can only end if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms. Interest in resolving the Gaza conflict has heightened in the wake of the US and Israeli bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities. Yemen missile launched toward Israel 'most likely' intercepted, Israeli army says
The Israeli army said on Saturday that a missile launched from Yemen toward Israeli territory had been "most likely successfully intercepted". Israel has threatened Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement – which has been attacking Israel in what it says is solidarity with Gaza – with a naval and air blockade if its attacks on Israel persist. Since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis, who control most of Yemen, have been firing at Israel and at shipping in the Red Sea, disrupting global trade. Most of the dozens of missiles and drones they have launched have been intercepted or fallen short. Israel has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes. —Reuters

Chavit Singson launches 'Chavit: Legend of the Philippines' in hopes to educate and inspire globally
Chavit Singson has officially launched his book, 'Chavit: Legend of the Philippines,' which aims to offer a look into the life and lessons of the former Ilocos Sur Governor. On Friday evening at the Peninsula Manila in Makati, Singson unveiled the book at an event graced by many of his friends, including showbiz personalities Vina Morales, Pops Fernandez, Anabelle Rama, and Eddie Gutierrez. 'Chavit: Legend of the Philippines' is not a traditional autobiography but a sprawling, in-depth interview with almost 700 questions answered by Singson. Singson said that a pivotal lesson he wishes readers to glean from the book, particularly concerning his role in politics, is the supreme importance of 'credibility' for success. 'If they want to be successful, kailangan 'yung credibility nila [ay] huwag masira. Kasi like me, ang iniingatan ko, isa lang salita ko. Nobody is perfect, pero kung magsabi ka, kailangan totoo,' he said. 'Nobody's perfect. Magkamali ka, just say sorry. Kasi 'yun ang kabilin-bilinan ng tatay ko. 'Pag nawala ang credibility mo, wala na maniwala sayo. So very important ang credibility. 'Yun ang kaingat-ingatan ko.' Photo: Carby Rose Basina/GMA Integrated News 'Chavit: Legend of the Philippines' is authored by Polish author Maciej Mikurda, who admitted that one of the biggest challenges for him was compressing Singson's rich and colorful life into a single volume. 'I think the governor's life could fill like 10 books, not only just one, but we focused on the most important facts,' he said. Mikurda, who devoted almost 1.5 years to writing the book, said that his focus was placed on the most important facts while also deliberately incorporating Singson's personal beliefs, values, and the rules he lives by to provide deeper insight. The book's publisher, Riza Hansen, shared that they plan to distribute the books to many students across the country, as well as to translate the book into 15 languages, with an Arabic translation already underway, aiming to make it accessible to over 5 billion people worldwide. This ambitious endeavor includes organizing book launches in 20 world capitals across six continents. 'We want as many people in the world as possible to know who Chavit is and how amazing his story is, and to understand the beautiful history of our country, the Philippines,' she said. Outside of politics, Singson is also involved in the entertainment industry, helping to produce projects, including the recent film 'Samahan ng mga Makasalanan,' which starred David Licauco, Sanya Lopez, and more. He teased that he has another upcoming project with GMA Network, which is coming 'very soon.' 'Ewan ko kung kailan, pero nakahanda na. Sinabi sa akin nakahanda na lahat. So 'yung formal na ano na lang, launching,' he said. 'I just want to help the movie industry.' —JCB, GMA Integrated News
