Little motivation needed to fire Sharks up for Bulls URC semi

The Citizen07-06-2025
It is all set to be a classic blockbuster semifinal derby between two huge local rivals when the Sharks take on the Bulls in their URC semifinal at Loftus.
The Sharks have needed very little motivation this week to get themselves fired up for their massive United Rugby Championship (URC) semifinal encounter against the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening (kick-off 6:30pm).
It is the Durban sides first time in a URC semifinal, and they had to qualify the hard way, by winning a first ever URC playoff penalty shootout against Munster last weekend.
That match went to 100 minutes, after the sides were locked level at 24-all at the end of fulltime, followed by a scoreless 20 minutes of extra time, meaning a kick-off was needed to break the deadlock.
Despite the toll that would have taken on the players, a derby semifinal against arguably their biggest local rivals in front of a crowd of 50000 people on the Highveld was the perfect tonic to lift them back up.
'With big games like this, it's often your easiest week as a coach. The players are all excited about the opportunity,' explained Sharks coach John Plumtree at the team announcement on Friday.
'We had to lighten the load a lot in training based on what happened last weekend, but they're feeling good.'
Done the double
A boost to the visitors heading into the clash is that they have already done the double over the Bulls in the pool phase this season, winning 20-17 in Durban in December, before stunning the hosts in Pretoria 29-19 earlier this year.
They will thus be high on confidence, but will also be well aware that they have to win the little battles on the day, including the psychological one.
A mouthwatering battle is also expected to be waged in the scrums, as a Springbok World Cup winning front row of Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi and Vincent Koch, front up against arguably the URC's best scrum this season, of Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Johan Grobbelaar and Wilco Louw.
'It's not just about who gets front-foot ball but also the psychological battle, and that's what it's all about, these big contests. The Bulls are not just a scrummaging team, they're a good set-piece team, particularly at Loftus,' Plumtree said.
'These are big derby games, aren't they? The Sharks-Bulls game at Loftus, everyone in Durban will be watching this game of rugby because it's based on the contests there have been over the years, and there have been some great contests.'
The winner of the Highveld semifinal will either be traveling to Dublin to face Irish powerhouse Leinster, or hosting Scottish defending champs Glasgow Warriors in the Grand Final next weekend.

Watch: What to expect on the final day of the 2025 FNB U18 Craven Week

Watch: What to expect on the final day of the 2025 FNB U18 Craven Week The action at this year's FNB U18 Craven Week, being played at Middelburg Hoërskool (Middies) in Mpumalanga, is set to conclude tomorrow. As is custom, matches on day five of the tournament will be played on more than one field. The unofficial final will be played on the A-field at 12:45. Here's what you can expect: Tries galore The first four days saw big scores fuelled by tries galore. From superb counterattacks to darting runs, the showpiece event showcased why South African schoolboy rugby is raved about. The weapon of choice has been lethal rolling mauls from lineout ball, often culminating in hookers dotting down for five-pointers. Think of Limpopo's Ziahn Lombaard (Hoërskool Pietersburg), who scored a hat-trick of tries off the back of a maul on day three, or Leopards hooker Juan van Rhyn of Hoërskool Lichtenburg, who scored from a rolling maul that cruised over the tryline with less than 120 seconds on the clock in match two of day four. Let's not forget the try-of-the-tournament contenders that include Middies and Pumas fullback Katlego Baloyi's five-pointer on day one and Valke winger Dihan Crause from Hoërskool Transvalia's second try of the match on day two. Prefer a prop in full flight? WP frontrower Jordan Jooste (Paarl Boys' High School) would've made you proud yesterday. All indications are that the try-scoring feast is likely to continue tomorrow. @supersportschools Western Province sail past the Sharks! ✨🏉 Jordan Jooste scored a spectacular try as WP overpowered the Sharks on Day 4 of Craven Week. WP flexed their muscles in a 45-13 win in Middelburg! 😤🔥 Day 4 and the best is yet to come!💪 #TheSportYouCareAboutMost💫 #sportsontiktok ♬ original sound – SuperSport Schools Sublime kicking off the tee Compliments should also go to the boots that kept the scoreboard ticking from difficult angles. WP's flyhalf, Ethan van Biljon of Stellenberg High School, comes to mind as he maintained a perfect kicking record during yesterday's bruising of the Sharks. Ethan slotted six conversions, three of them near the touchline, as well as a penalty, as he racked up 15 of his side's 45 points yesterday. Another Province kicker, WP XV centre Iwan Jordaan (Paarl Boys' High School) was also in fine kicking form against the Pumas on day three. He slotted three conversions, one being a difficult kick from the touchline, in four attempts. Free State flyhalf Darius Erwee (Grey College) was another who showed the power in his boot, kicking over a long-range effort in his side's thumping of the Bulls on Wednesday. More Muller magic? WP centre Markus Muller of Paarl Gimnasium will surely want to continue his try-scoring form, which has made him a much-talked-about topic heading into this year's tournament. Will he help his side to victory against the SWD Eagles? There's no reason he shouldn't. A fellow SA Schools hopeful, Sharks fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya (Westville Boys' High School), would want to shine in his final match of the tournament. A good performance would likely see him selected for either the SA Schools or SA Schools A-side – these teams play each other in a friendly on Middies' A-field next Thursday. @supersportschools Staryboy Siyaya! ⭐️🚀 Zekhethelo Siyaya scored a brilliant try against Eastern Province in their FNB U18 Craven Week match-up! The Sharks claimed a 41-10 W over EP! 😤🔥 Congratulations to the boys!🔥👏 #TheSportYouCareAboutMost💫 #sportsontiktok ♬ original sound – SuperSport Schools Bulls No 14 Thabiso Simelane (St Alban's College), who scored a hat-trick in his side's 52-33 loss to the Free State, will hope to add more tries to his tally and also stake his name for selection. Speaking of the Free State, don't take your eyes off fullback Lamla Mgedezi (Grey College), who also scored three tries in the match. Game on The SWD Eagles stand between WP and a sixth consecutive unofficial Craven Week title. That match kicks off at 12:45 on the A-field. 5 things to look out for when the Springboks face Italy in Gqeberha

5 things to look out for when the Springboks face Italy in Gqeberha The Springboks are 1–0 up in their two-match series against Italy after a 42–22 win at Loftus Versfeld last Saturday. This weekend they are up against the same Italians in Gqeberha and hoping to make a big impression after a few struggles last Saturday. Coach Rassie Erasmus has made several changes to the matchday 23 from last week, with a few players set to make their debuts and Willie le Roux to earn his 100th Test cap. Le Roux hits 100 According to The Citizen, the veteran fullback, aged 35 and a national team debutant in 2013, will win his 100th cap for the Boks tomorrow. He becomes the eighth South African to hit the milestone after Eben Etzebeth, Victor Matfield, Bryan Habana, Tendai Mtawarira, John Smit, Jean de Villiers and Percy Montgomery. In his career, Le Roux has played club and provincial rugby for Boland, Griquas, Cheetahs, Sharks, Wasps in England, Canon Eagles and Toyota Verblitz in Japan, and most recently the Bulls. Newcomers to Bok roll of honour Following Vincent Tshituka's Test debut last weekend in Pretoria, a few other players are set to win their first caps this weekend. While none of the starters are uncapped, three rookies will be on the bench waiting for their opportunity to run on to the field. They are prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye of the Lions, lock Cobus Wiese of the Bulls and centre-wing Ethan Hooker of the Sharks. Wiese and his brother, starting No 8 Jasper, are set to become the 37th set of brothers to play for the Boks. Players keen to make their mark Eight starters and three bench players have fewer than 20 Tests for the Boks and are looking to impress Erasmus to secure more opportunities, especially for The Rugby Championship later this year. In the backs, wing Edwill van der Merwe has just one Test to his name, Canan Moodie has 12 caps, and André Esterhuizen 19. Manie Libbok has also played only 19 Tests, while Grant Williams has 18. In the forwards, lock Ruan Nortjé has six caps and captain and lock partner Salmaan Moerat 10. Tighthead prop Wilco Louw has played 17 Tests. On the bench, Jan-Hendrik Wessels (4), Evan Roos (7) and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (8) will want to make an impact. Return of Pieter-Steph du Toit One of world rugby's greatest current players and a former World Rugby Player of the Year Pieter-Steph du Toit is back after missing the start of the season with injury setbacks. The 86-times capped blindside flanker will be among the more experienced players tomorrow, and many teammates will look to him for guidance. Alongside Du Toit, Malcolm Marx (77 Tests) and Moerat are expected to lead the side. Du Toit will aim to show he has overcome his injuries. When he is at his best, the Boks generally reach the standards expected of them. Selections to watch With Aphelele Fassi and Damian Willemse waiting in the wings as first-choice fullbacks, could this be Le Roux's last Test for the Boks? Canan Moodie, a regular wing, is back at No 13, where he has played before – but how will he fare? Makazole Mapimpi, one of the Boks' heroes of the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, gets another chance to showcase his skills out wide. Moerat is again entrusted with the No 4 jersey and the captaincy, though he is yet to convince at Test level. Could this be his breakthrough moment? Finally, with Esterhuizen starting at centre, will we see him shift to flank later in the game and fulfil his 'hybrid' role?

U18 Craven Week day four results: WP too good for Sharks

The Valke, Griquas and EP also recorded wins on Thursday. Jordan Jooste of WP hangs on to the ball in his team's match against the Sharks. Picture: Sydney Seshibedi/Gallo Images Western Province and Eastern Province claimed derby wins on the fourth day of the U18 Craven Week at Hoërskool Middelburg on Thursday. WP maintained their perfect record at this week's tournament after downing the Sharks 45-13, while EP proved too strong for Border in the Eastern Cape derby, running out 30-12 winners. Earlier on Thursday, the Valke and Griquas secured their first wins of the competition when they beat Boland and the Leopards respectively. The first quarter of the match between WP and the Sharks was fiercely contested, with the Sharks stretching the WP defence and wing Jadrian Afrikaner touching down for a hard-earned try. WP hit back with tries by centre Markus Muller and prop Matthew van der Merwe, while flyhalf Ethan van Biljon slotted a penalty goal on the stroke of half-time to boost his team's lead to 11 points. Province continued to dominate after the break, and went on to finish with six tries in an emphatic 45-13 win, with the impressive Muller bagging a brace. The last round of matches will be played on Saturday, with WP taking on South Western Districts in the final match of the tournament. Free State will play the curtain-raiser to the 'final' when they go up against the Sharks. In all, eight matches will be played, on the A and B fields.
