Tattoo studio owners 'lose everything' after fire destroys four-storey building

STV News15-07-2025
The owners of a tattoo studio destroyed by a fire in Kilmarnock have said they have 'lost everything'.
Six fire engines and two specialist units were sent to the well-developed fire at a four-storey building on King Street around 9pm on Monday.
Emergency services remain on the scene of the fire that spread to a number of premises.
Hard Luck Tattoo Studio opened in the town centre building in June after a year of renovations.
Owner Niky Brown told STV News that he and partner Kirsty Donald, 30, have 'lost everything', including equipment worth £50,000 to £60,000.
Over a dozen tattoo artists have also had their livelihoods destroyed.
A fundraiser to help the team has already raised over £13,000.
The 37-year-old business owner admitted he had 'tears in his eyes' watching the fire take hold. Forever Young/Supplied Fire destroys four-storey building
'We've lost everything. We have a three-month-old, too.
'We're just a small business, we've only eight other staff', he said. 'We've lost around £50,000 worth of equipment. Tattoo machines are expensive.
'I had tears in my eyes, to be honest, I've never seen anything like that in my life, it was something from a Hollywood film.'
Police say investigations into the cause of the fire, which caused the building the collapse, are ongoing.
The town's Burns Mall has been closed, and members of the public have been urged to avoid the area as emergency services remain on the scene.
There have been no reports of any injuries, something Niky said he can be grateful for.
'That's the scary thing, one of the boys was meant to work, but I told him not to work. Thankfully, he didn't.
'My livelihood has been destroyed, but I'm grateful no one has been hurt.' STV News King St fire: Niky Brown said his livelihood has been 'destroyed'.
A GoFundMe has been launched and also already raised over £13,000 to help replace the tattoo equipment and allow staff to return to work.
'I just want to say thank you very much from everyone in the town and surrounding areas, hopefully I can get the equipment back and get back open soon.
'Take care and appreciate what you have. Might be gone tomorrow', he added.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: 'We were alerted at 8.58pm on Monday, July 14, to reports of a fire to the rear of a commercial building on King Street, Kilmarnock.
'At its height, operations control mobilised six appliances and specialist resources to the scene of a well-developed fire affecting a four-storey building, which partially collapsed.
'There are no reported casualties.
'Two appliances and specialist resources remain at the scene as they work to make the area safe.'

Cineworld to be kicked out of world's tallest cinema

Cineworld is to be kicked out of the world's tallest cinema complex. The building on Renfrew Street in Glasgow has been operated by Cineworld since it takeover from UGC in 2005. Cineworld has confirmed that the landlord intends to take back the site and employees impacted have been informed. The new owner purchased the site for £7m in May this year. Cineworld has been leasing the building for more than £1m a year, according to title documents seen by STV News. Clydebankbridge Ltd is owned by Omniplex, an Irish cinema group that took over five Empire sites in 2023 – including the one in Clydebank. The lease on the building was due to run until 2036 – but it appears the new owner is seeking to end this prematurely. Omniplex has been contacted for comment. A Cineworld spokesperson said: 'We are aware of the landlord's intention to take back the site at Cineworld Glasgow Renfrew Street. 'We have communicated to and are working closely with our employees that may be impacted. At this stage, we do not have further information to share.' Opened in September 2021, the UGC Cinema stands at 62m tall, has 18 screens across 12 storeys and can seat more than 4,200 people. It was taken over and rebranded by Cineworld in 2005. After entering administration in 2023, Cineworld announced the closure of six cinemas in a major company restructure. It closed sites at Glasgow Parkhead, Bedford, Hinckley, Loughborough, Yate and Swindon Circus. Cineworld operates eight cinemas in Scotland with three locations in Glasgow, two in Aberdeen and sites in Dundee, Falkirk and Edinburgh. Offshore wind ‘one of Scotland's greatest modern success stories'

Offshore wind is 'one of Scotland's greatest modern success stories', First Minister John Swinney has said, as he is set to open a new development. Swinney will visit the operations centre for the Neart na Gaoithe in Eyemouth, East Lothian, on Thursday. The 54-turbine project off the Fife coast hopes to produce up to 450 megawatts of energy – enough to power 375,000 homes. Speaking ahead of the opening ceremony, Swinney said: 'Offshore wind is rapidly becoming one of Scotland's greatest modern success stories, with the sector already creating significant opportunities, delivering jobs and attracting major investment across the country. 'It is essential that people across Scotland are able to reap the considerable benefits that offshore wind promises. 'Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm – and in particular its operations and maintenance base at Eyemouth – shows what can happen when industry and communities work together. 'The development will not only provide clean, sustainable energy but deliver lasting benefits to the community of Eyemouth and beyond, through the creation of around 50 high quality, permanent jobs across office-based and operational roles over the next 25 years. 'This drive to maximise the local economic benefit of offshore wind is something that is critically important for the Scottish Government; and Eyemouth is an excellent example of how this can be achieved.' People smugglers to have assets frozen and face UK ban under new sanctions

People-smuggling gang leaders and corrupt law enforcement officials could have their assets frozen and be banned from the UK as part of new efforts to curb illegal immigration. Companies that sell small boat equipment for Channel crossings will also face the raft of sanctions announced by the Foreign Secretary on Tuesday. This ranges from those involved in supplying and financing small boats, fake passports, and 'middlemen' putting cash through the Hawala system, a legal money transfer system, which is also used in payments linked to Channel crossings. The first wave of sanctions comes into force on Wednesday, and recipients will be publicly named, so it will be illegal for UK businesses and banks to deal with them. More than 20 designations are expected to be in the firing line, and could include corrupt public officials and police officers in steps to tackle the multi-billion-dollar industry. Over 23,500 migrants have crossed the Channel in small boats so far in 2025. The fresh sanctions aim to target organised crime gangs wherever they are in the world and disrupt their flow of cash, including freezing bank accounts, property and other assets, to hinder their activities. The latest measures to curb people-smuggling come as the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill continues through Parliament. The bill, if passed, will introduce new criminal offences and hand counterterror-style powers to police and enforcement agencies to crack down on people smuggling gangs. Details are also being ironed out on a so-called 'one in, one out' pilot scheme, announced by Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this month. The scheme will see migrants arriving via small boat to the UK promptly sent back to France, in exchange for a different individual being allowed to come to the UK by a safe and legal route. However, there is no 'fixed' target for the number of migrants who will be returned to France if they cross the Channel via small boat, the home secretary has said. Discussing the new sanctions, Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: 'For too long, criminal gangs have been lining their corrupt pockets and preying on the hopes of vulnerable people with impunity as they drive irregular migration to the UK. We will not accept this status quo. 'That's why the UK has created the world's first sanctions regime targeted at gangs involved in people smuggling and driving irregular migration, as well as their enablers. 'From tomorrow, those involved will face having their assets frozen, being shut off from the UK financial system and banned from travelling to the UK.'
