7 missing after explosion at California fireworks warehouse sets off massive blaze

New York Post8 hours ago
Seven people were missing Wednesday following an explosion at a fireworks warehouse in rural Northern California that caused a massive fire that spread to farm fields and forced evacuations in the surrounding community, authorities said.
Two people were injured and received medical care, Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence said at a news conference Wednesday. Lawrence provided no further information other than to say the two were 'OK,' and it wasn't known if the victims worked at the facility.
Emergency crews and investigators were working with the property's owner and monitoring the area using drones to find the missing individuals, said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It was not immediately clear if those missing worked at the warehouse or lived nearby.

People were urged to avoid the area after the Tuesday night blast, which set off a barrage of fireworks and caused a blaze that led to other spot fires and collapsed the building near Esparto in Yolo County about 40 miles northwest of Sacramento.
The cause of the explosion was under investigation.

'The fire will take time to cool, and once it does, explosive experts must safely enter the site to assess and secure the area,' the Yolo County Sheriff's Office said in a statement late Tuesday.
Syanna Ruiz, 18, told the Sacramento Bee that her boyfriend, Jesus Ramos, and two of his brothers were missing. Tuesday was Ramos's first day on the job at the warehouse, she said.
'They were all three incredible men who had so much coming for them, that had so much coming their way,' Ruiz said. 'I'm just praying to God that some way, somehow, they're OK.'

The fire was held at nearly 80 acres after scorching surrounding agricultural fields, officials said.
The property is owned by 'an active pyrotechnic license holder,' Cal Fire said in a statement Wednesday.
'This type of incident is very rare, as facilities like this are required to not only follow our stringent California pyrotechnic requirements, but also federal explosive storage requirements.'
The state fire marshal's website listed the license for the facility as belonging to Blackstar Fireworks.

The owner who was listed did not respond to an email from The Associated Press requesting comment.
Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said it was tracking what happened and that state ground and air resources were deployed.
'The State Fire Marshal has sent an arson and bomb investigation team, and stands ready to provide additional support as needed,' the governor's office said on the social site X.
Officials in nearby Sutter and Yuba counties announced Wednesday that they were exploring alternatives for Fourth of July celebrations after their fireworks were destroyed in the blast.

List of Cities Canceling 4th of July Events Expands: What to Know

Several cities across the United States have canceled their Fourth of July celebrations just before the holiday. These cities are citing several reasons for canceling or postponing their celebrations, including fears that Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers might use the event to arrest people, as well as concerns about overcrowding. Independence Day is typically celebrated with large gatherings and fireworks displays, but current events and city budgets are affecting how people spend the holiday in 2025. These cancellations also come as the FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have said they are working together to ensure there are no terrorism incidents over the holiday weekend, amid fears of a lone-wolf attack similar to the New Year's Eve attack in New Orleans. The cities that have canceled their celebrations or limited their festivities as of July 3 are: County of Los Angeles: East LA Rockin' 4th of July The Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department has canceled East LA's Rockin' 4th of July celebration, among other community events, "out of caution, and in response to recent ICE enforcement activity impacting our communities." Bell Gardens, CA: All events The city of Bell Gardens has canceled all Independence Day events due to concerns about ICE. The predominantly Hispanic city has been hosting several events over the past few months aimed at educating immigrants on their rights regarding ICE arrests. Esparto Area, CA: Five Fireworks Displays Displays in Lodi Lake, El Dorado, Chico, Cloverdale, and St Helena have all been canceled following an explosion at the warehouse containing fireworks for these events. Seven people are still unaccounted for following the blast, causing the displays to be canceled out of respect for those affected. Whittier, CA: 4th of July Freedom Walk The city of Whittier has canceled its 4th of July Freedom Walk following community concerns about the event. Although city officials did not reference ICE in the announcement, Whittier has seen an increase in ICE activity over the past months. Mayor Joe Vinatieri cited "recent feedback we've received from some community members" as the reason for canceling the event. Whittier is still hosting a fireworks display at York Field. SeaTac, WA: Fireworks/Drone Display The city of SeaTac has canceled its fireworks display, citing concerns over crowd control and safety. David Inman, the city's communications director, said Angle Lake Park, where the display takes place, has a capacity of 3,200 people, but 10,000 people came last year with only 10 police officers on duty. A statement from the city said: "We simply cannot ensure a safe environment for large nighttime events at this time." Inman has said this decision is not related to last year's drone disaster, when the city shifted away from fireworks and spent $40,000 on a drone display, only for 55 of the 200 drones to fall into the lake. Itasca, IL: Fireworks Display The village of Itasca is known for hosting the largest Fourth of July fireworks display in Illinois, but has had to cancel the famous event this year. Village administrator Carrie Ergo said it was an "extremely difficult decision to make." The display has been canceled due to construction around Hamilton Lakes Business Park. The building works led to limited space for the holiday crowd. This is in addition to existing concerns about crowd control, as the event has become a lot more popular since the COVID-19 pandemic, and has led to community issues, including drunk and disorderly behavior and trespassing. The village was faced with a dilemma of either significantly increasing its budget to accommodate the changes or canceling the event this year. Whittier Mayor Joe Vinatierisaid in a press release: "While celebrating our nation's founding is very important to me and to Whittier residents, my colleagues and I also want to be sensitive to the recent feedback we've received from some community members asking that we pause this year's Freedom Walk event." Itasca Village Administrator Carrie Ergo said in a press release: "This was an extremely difficult decision to make. Itasca takes great pride in hosting the biggest and best fireworks show in Northern Illinois. Our first priority is always protecting the safety and security of Itasca residents, businesses, and visitors. Given the unique challenges presented this year, we cannot confidently recommend hosting fireworks in 2025." Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation said on social media: "It is with deep respect and a heavy heart that the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation cancellation of this year's East Los Angeles Rockin 4th of July celebration. Out of caution, and in response to recent ICE enforcement activity impacting our communities, we are prioritizing safety and well-being of our residents, visitors, and staff." The vast majority of Fourth of July events will still take place across the country. There are also mass protests against the Trump administration planned for the holiday weekend. Organized by the Women's March, the "Free America Weekend" protests will take place in cities across 34 states, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Montgomery, Houston, and Seattle. An inside look at how law enforcement prepares to keep communities safe during Fourth of July celebrations across the U.S.

Americans will celebrate the Fourth of July on Friday, but behind the scenes, law enforcement agencies in big cities and small towns across the U.S. will be on high alert to keep the holiday secure. This year, the Department of Homeland Security has activated its national terrorism advisory system following U.S. strikes against Iran. In Fairfax County, Virginia, the Real Time Crime Center is the hub of police operations. For the Fourth of July, it's all hands on deck, Chief of Police Kevin Davis told CBS News. "I think I wouldn't be doing my job if I wasn't always worried, but we know our ability to react is better than it ever has been," Davis said. Police there have the ability to tap into more than 20,000 live cameras across the county, including those worn by officers. "It puts us in a great position to get additional assistance to the police officers in the street," Davis said. Nearly 300 officers in the county will be activated on Friday alongside the civil disturbance unit. A helicopter and drones will also be on standby. Assistant Chief of Police Bob Blakely expects large gatherings across the county's more than 400 parks. "We try to always be highly visible. We believe, you know, preparedness, a little bit of prevention goes a long way," Blakely said. Officers will be visible on the ground and along the waterways. "July 4th is probably the busiest day of the year," said Master Police Officer Tim Judd, who captains Marine Patrol One. "We all work together to ensure a safe outcome." For families who are nervous to bring their children to their local holiday fireworks, Davis advised, "have a plan, celebrate the Fourth of July and just know that your local police department is here to keep you safe."

Danish police examine suspicious package at Israeli Embassy in Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Police were examining a suspicious package sent to the Israeli Embassy in Denmark's capital, authorities said Thursday. Danish public broadcaster DR showed photos of several police and emergency vehicles near the embassy in Copenhagen, including what they reported was a hazmat emergency response team vehicle. Several police officers, heavily armed soldiers and men in dark green hazmat suits and gas masks were shown standing behind a cordoned-off area near a white building in the Hellerup neighborhood in north Copenhagen. Copenhagen police wrote on X that 'we are present at the Israeli Embassy, where we are investigating a shipment received.' They added that 'we currently have no further information.' Police also said that they blocked off roads near the embassy. Anders Frederiksen, duty chief at the Copenhagen Police, told Danish daily Ekstra Bladet that 'ordinary citizens in the area should not be worried.' He added that the investigation was taking place inside the embassy building after employees there alerted police. Frederiksen declined to comment on the contents of the suspicious shipment. A spokesperson reached by phone at the press department of the Israeli Embassy in Copenhagen said that he couldn't comment on the situation. Security officials in many European countries have increased surveillance and protection of Israeli and Jewish institutions after a 12-day war broke out between Israel and Iran in June. Last week, security officers arrested a man in the Danish city of Aarhus on suspicion of gathering information on Jewish locations and individuals in Germany for Iranian intelligence. German federal prosecutors said the man was tasked by an Iranian intelligence service early this year with gathering information on 'Jewish localities and specific Jewish individuals' in Berlin. They didn't elaborate. He spied on three properties in June, 'presumably in preparation of further intelligence activities in Germany, possibly including terrorist attacks on Jewish targets,' prosecutors said. German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig said that 'if this suspicion is confirmed, we are dealing with an outrageous operation,' adding in a statement that 'the protection of Jewish life has the highest priority for the German government.' Germany has requested the extradition of the suspect.
