Kolkata, July 15 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party TMC today congratulated Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla on his safe return to earth after spending 18 days in space. Shukla returned to earth as the Dragon spacecraft splashed down near the coast of California at 3.01 pm IST. Shukla and three other astronauts of the Axiom-4 mission began their return journey to earth yesterday after the Dragon Grace spacecraft undocked from the International Space Station after an 18-day stay. Shukla and three others, Axiom 4 (Ax-4) crew Commander Peggy Whitson, and Mission Specialists Slawosz 'Suave' Uznanski-Wisniewski and Tibor Kapu embarked on the space odyssey on June 25 from Florida. "Welcome home, Shubhanshu Shukla! We are really happy to see that you are back. It is a matter of pride for us to see what you have done. Congratulations to you and your team members, and best wishes to your family," the Bengal chief minister said. "We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla on his historic return from space," a TMC statement said. "As the first Indian to visit the International Space Station, his journey is a proud milestone for the nation and a shining inspiration for future generations," the Trinamool Congress said. Axiom-4 crew return highlights Group Captain Shukla, along with his three crew members of the Axiom-4 mission, returned from the International Space Station (ISS) after their 20-day space odyssey. 'Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's successful return from the historic Axiom-4 mission is a proud moment for every Indian. He has not just touched space, he has lifted India's aspirations to new heights,' Mr. Singh wrote on X. 'His journey to the International Space Station and back is not just a personal milestone, it is a proud stride for India's growing space ambitions. Wishing him great success in his future endeavours,' he said. Mr. Singh, a Lok Sabha member from Lucknow, spoke to Mr. Shukla's father on the phone to convey his greetings and told him that the country was proud of his son's achievements.

LUCKNOW: 'I am speechless. My son has safely returned, I thank God,' says a teary-eyed Asha Shukla, mother of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who splashed down on Tuesday after completing his 18-day space odyssey. The family is now eagerly awaiting his return to India, reportedly on August 17. The Indian astronaut's family rejoiced on his return to Earth after the historic mission to the International Space Station (ISS). While Shukla's mother was seen wiping her tears flowing down her cheeks continuously on seeing her son coming out of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft 'Grace', his father, equally emotional, was seen basking in the glory of his son's accomplishment being acknowledged by the entire country. 'I got emotional, after all, my son has returned after many days," said Asha Shukla, adding: 'Excitement is endless and we are very proud. We were afraid at first… The upcoming generation should take inspiration and move ahead as well." Expressing his contentment, father Shambhu Dayal Shukla seemed eager to be joined by his son as soon as possible. "Now we want to meet Shubhanshu as soon as possible... we had been praying for his safe return...,' said Shambhu Dayal Shukla, extending his gratitude to the Almighty and the VVIPs, including the PM, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and others who extended their wishes to the Group Captain.
