Not feasible for Kedah govt to operate ferry, flight services to Langkawi

ALOR STAR: Proposals for the Kedah state government to manage ferry and flight services from the capital to Langkawi have been deemed impractical and commercially unviable.
State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Salleh Saidin stressed the importance of learning from the Langkawi Development Authority's (Lada) past failure to sustain its ferry service to the island.
"There was a time when Lada operated a ferry service in the hope of enhancing the tourism sector and improving local connectivity. However, the initiative failed to achieve its intended objectives, as the ferries purchased were unable to operate optimally or consistently," he told the state assembly today.
Salleh added that a series of technical issues, along with weaknesses in maintenance and operational management, ultimately rendered the ferries unfit for regular use.
"As a result, the investment failed to deliver satisfactory returns for the agency and caused financial and reputational damage to Lada and its subsidiary," he said in response to a suggestion from Amar Pared Mahamud (PN–Kuah).
Salleh also said that operating flights from Alor Star to Langkawi was not commercially viable.
"It is worth noting that the relatively short distance — some 100km — makes the route less viable for flight services when compared with existing land and sea transport alternatives," he said, in response to a suggestion by Loh Wei Chai (PH–Bakar Arang).
However, Salleh expressed openness to further engagement with the Transport Ministry, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, and airline operators to conduct a feasibility study on the route.
"This could include exploring the potential for seasonal or chartered flights, particularly in conjunction with the Visit Kedah Year 2025 campaign for promotional purposes," he said.

Encore Melaka Among Proposed WTD 2025 Celebration Venues

MELAKA, July 13 (Bernama) -- Encore Melaka, located in Impression City, Kota Syahbandar, has been proposed as one of the venues for the 2025 World Tourism Day (WTD) celebration this September. State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman, Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, said that the venue was chosen for its strategic location along the Straits of Melaka, positioning Encore Melaka as a unique tourism product, with strong potential to attract both domestic and international visitors. He said Encore Melaka is not only a theatre equipped with a 360-degree rotating stage, but also serves as a centre for arts and cultural performances. 'At the moment, we have several proposed venues, including sites in the Banda Hilir area, and Encore Melaka, which we have submitted to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture for consideration. 'Encore Melaka was proposed due to its coastal location, which allows us to showcase the Straits of Melaka as part of the celebration. Additionally, it is a distinctive tourism product, with the potential to attract international visitors,' he told reporters here today. He said this after opening the People's Representative for the People (WRUR) programme in the Duyong state constituency, which was also attended by the Duyong assemblyman and deputy chairman of the state Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee, Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. Abdul Razak added that, in preparation for WTD 2025, a variety of engaging programmes are being planned to enliven the celebration, in line with Melaka's selection as the launch venue for Visit Malaysia Year 2026. 'Several programmes are scheduled for September, including religious events in conjunction with the Maulidur Rasul celebration, under the Islamic Tourism cluster. He said that further details on the upcoming programmes will be announced to the public soon.

Bung's leadership remains strong and people's choice - Salleh

Salleh speaking at the Radu Tatap Radu event. KINABATANGAN (July 13): A vibrant show of unity and grassroots support was on full display at the Radu Tatap Radu event held on Sunday at the Buang Sayang Polling District Centre (PDM) in the Lamag state constituency, with the spotlight firmly on the leadership of Datuk Seri Panglima Bung Moktar Radin. Speaking at the event, Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, director of BN Sabah's election campaign, stated that any attempt to challenge Bung's position in Lamag is nothing more than a political fantasy. 'Any effort to topple Bung in Lamag is merely wishful thinking,' said Salleh. 'The people of Lamag know Bung well. They have seen, with their own eyes, the transformation he has brought to Kinabatangan – a once-neglected region that is now nationally recognised for its development, infrastructure upgrades and political significance.' Salleh further emphasized that Bung who is also the Member of Parliament for Kinabatangan, is not just a strong figure in Lamag but one of the key voices advocating for Sabah at the national level. 'Bung's experience, courage and unwavering commitment to the people are second to none. From rural road upgrades and clean water supply to ensuring Kinabatangan's concerns are heard in federal corridors – he has consistently delivered,' he added. The Radu Tatap Radu event at Buang Sayang, which was also attended by Bung himself, was described by Salleh as more than just a community programme – it was a clear display of loyalty and political confidence from the people. 'This is more than a community programme – it is a declaration of loyalty. Bung's leadership is not only respected but sought after by the people. Lamag remains a BN stronghold, and the voters are clear about who they trust to continue fighting for their future,' he concluded.
