At least nine bus passengers abducted, shot dead by militants in Pakistan

QUETTA: Militants abducted and shot dead at least nine bus passengers travelling through Pakistan's restive southwestern Balochistan province, government officials said Friday.
Security forces are battling a rise in ethnic and separatist violence in impoverished but mineral-rich Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran.
The militants boarded two buses on a major highway and checked passengers' identity cards before forcing nine people off the vehicles at gunpoint overnight on Thursday.
"The terrorists forced the two passenger buses to stop on a highway and pulled nine passengers out. They took them in an area nearby and killed all of them," local government official Naveed Alam told AFP.
The attackers specifically targeted people from Punjab, the country's most populous and prosperous province and a major recruitment base for the military.
"The forces found the dead bodies all belong to different areas of Punjab," said Saadat Hussain, another senior government official.
The Balochistan Liberation Front (BLA), a separatist group fighting the state, later claimed responsibility for the attack.
The BLA has emerged as the biggest threat targeting foreign interests, security forces and Pakistanis from outside the province.
Baloch separatists and rights groups say the military's heavy-handed counter-terrorism response to the insurgency has included widespread enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
Balochistan is rich in hydrocarbons and minerals, but 70 percent of its 15 million inhabitants live below the poverty line.
In March, the militant group was behind a deadly train siege with more than 450 passengers on board.
Last year was the deadliest in a decade for Pakistan, with a surge in attacks that killed more than 1,600 people, according to Islamabad-based analysis group the Center for Research and Security Studies.

Freedom Flotilla's Handala approaches Gaza, faces Israeli navy threat

An aid vessel launched by the Freedom Flotilla, carrying 19 activists and two journalists, is nearing Gaza in defiance of Israel's blockade. Named Handala, the boat could face interception like its predecessor Madleen, as tensions mount over humanitarian access. read more The Freedom Flotilla ship "Handala" as it leaves for Gaza at a port in Syracuse, Sicily, southern Italy. AFP The activist group Freedom Flotilla announced Saturday that its latest aid boat dispatched to Gaza was approaching the territory and planned to land there the following morning in defiance of an Israeli blockade. The vessel, named the Handala after a popular Palestinian cartoon character, was just 105 nautical miles (194 kilometres) from its destination, organisers said – closer to Gaza than its predecessor the Madleen was when it was intercepted in June. The Israeli navy said it would likewise block the new vessel from reaching the war-torn Palestinian territory. 'The [Israeli army] enforces the legal maritime security blockade on the Gaza Strip and is prepared for a wide range of scenarios, which it will act upon in accordance with directives of the political echelon,' an army spokesperson told AFP on Saturday. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Carrying 19 activists and two journalists from various countries, the Handala first set sail from Sicily on July 13 in a bid to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza and deliver aid to its population. The territory is facing severe shortages of food and other essentials, with the United Nations and NGOs warning of an imminent famine. The Handala's crew said in a post on X that they would go on a hunger strike if the Israeli army intercepted the boat and detained its passengers. The last boat sent by Freedom Flotilla, the Madleen, was intercepted by the Israeli army in international waters on June 9 and towed to the Israeli port of Ashdod. It carried 12 campaigners on board, including prominent Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

MACT orders 1.8 cr payout to accident victims' kin

Mumbai: A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has ordered a payout of over Rs 1.4 crore to the family of Mulund-based marketing manager Mehul Thakkar, who died in a car crash in June 2019. The family of another deceased victim, Harshida Davda, will receive around Rs 38 lakh, and Davda's husband, Bharat Davda, was also awarded compensation of around Rs 4.5 lakh for the injuries suffered in the same accident. MACT ruled that Bhauben Thakkar, owner of the vehicle involved, and her insurance company, Reliance General Ins Co Ltd, must jointly pay the compensation. Mehul's wife, who was in the car too, deposed before the tribunal. A criminal case was also registered against the driver for causing death by negligence. The company initially disputed the claim, arguing that the accident didn't happen as described, and that the driver wasn't negligent or didn't have a valid license. "The company has not challenged the chargesheet and there is no substance in the contention raised by the company proving that the driver of the offending vehicle was rash driving at a high speed and was solely responsible for the accident." the tribunal said. Considering the victims' age at the time of death, MACT included their potential future earnings and the family's financial losses due to untimely death for compensation.
