Pakistan relinquishes UNSC presidency

Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad hosted a largely attended reception to mark the end of Pakistan's presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of July.
Heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the United Nations, senior UN officials, prominent citizens and senior journalists attended the event held on Thursday.
Pakistan's former's UN Ambassador, Munir Akram, also attended the reception.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar thanked his counterparts and guests for attending the reception and for their cooperation during Pakistan's presidency of the Council.
He also thanked former Ambassador Akram, a well known figure at the UN, for his presence at the gathering.
During its presidency, besides other agenda items, Pakistan organised two signature events — an high-level open debate on "Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes". At the end of the debate, the 15-member Council unanimously adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution calling on member-states to take measures for the effective implementation of the Council's resolutions for peaceful settlement of disputes.
The other signature event was a high-level briefing of the Security Council focusing on enhancing cooperation between the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) following which a presidential statement was issued.
Pakistan also presided over the quarterly open debate of the Council on the "Situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian Question".
The high-level events were presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar.
Pakistan began its current two-year term as a non-permanent member in January 2025 and will serve through the end of 2026.

Five children killed, 13 hurt in Lakki Marwat mortar shell explosion

LAKKI MARWAT: At least five children were killed and 13 others injured in an explosion caused by a mortar shell in the Surband Langar Khel area of Lakki Marwat district on Saturday. According to District Police Officer (DPO) Nazir Khan, the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Saddar police station when a group of children discovered an old mortar shell lying outside the village. Unaware of its danger, they brought it home where it exploded while they were playing. The blast killed four girls and a boy on the spot, all of whom were between the ages of six and 12. Thirteen members of the same household, including women and men, sustained injuries of varying degrees and were shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, Rescue officials confirmed. Rescue 1122 teams swiftly responded, transferring the injured and deceased to a local hospital for treatment and medico-legal formalities. District Police Officer (DPO) Lakki Marwat and other law enforcement personnel reached the site soon after the explosion and cordoned off the area. Bomb disposal experts have also been called in to search for any additional unexploded ordnance. Earlier, security forces successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt by Indian-sponsored militant group Fitna Al-Khawarij near the Pak-Afghan border, according to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). According to the ISPR, Indian-backed Fitna Al-Khwarij was killed during a decisive operation in Hassan Khel, North Waziristan. The security forces also recovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosive materials. The military's swift response has once again demonstrated its readiness and resolve to counter cross-border terrorism. The statement reiterated Pakistan's firm commitment to eliminating Indian-sponsored terrorism and highlighted that security forces remain fully prepared to confront any threats along the border. ISPR also called upon the interim Afghan government to prevent the use of Afghan soil for launching terrorist attacks against Pakistan, particularly by foreign-sponsored proxies.

TTP and abettors

Listen to article The fragile ceasefire between India and Pakistan following May's military clashes has created a situation ripe for exploitation by terrorists. Increased focus on the eastern border means fewer resources are available for the western border and counterterrorism operations in Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and elsewhere. This is evidenced by recent attacks, including those by Baloch nationalist terrorist groups and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). In the case of TTP, the situation is also exacerbated by the fact that the TTP can act with impunity from Afghanistan. A recent UN report backed up Pakistan's position on the issue, noting that the TTP continues "to receive substantial logistical and operational support" from the Afghan Taliban, and that the terrorist group has "continued access to a range of weapons, enhancing the lethality of attacks". The group's size has also swelled to an estimated 6,000 fighters — more than an average army brigade. Curiously, the report also noted that despite the Afghan Taliban being at war with Daesh in Afghanistan, the TTP and Daesh maintain "tactical-level connections" with Daesh. In a similar vein, despite their completely different motivations, the TTP is reportedly hosting and training Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) terrorists at its camps in southern Afghanistan. This raises the question whether the TTP is still primarily a religious extremist group, or just another anti-Pakistan terrorist group, as Islamabad has recently argued. This would also support Pakistan's argument that Baloch nationalist terrorists and the TTP are all receiving Indian funding. Meanwhile, Daesh is also reportedly using the Indian government's anti-Muslim dog whistles — directed at Pakistan — as a recruitment tool. Given India's propensity to blame Pakistan for any violence against it, rather than New Delhi's own policing or intelligence failures, Daesh or its affiliates could easily spark the fire that leads to war in the subcontinent.
