‘God saved me for righteous purpose': At FIFA final, Trump marks one year of assassination attempt on him

Indian Express3 days ago
US President Donald Trump on Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of the failed assassination attempt against him by attending the FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. Joined by family, friends, and close advisers, Trump commemorated the day while watching Chelsea secure a decisive victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). 'It remains my firm conviction that God alone saved me that day for a righteous purpose: to restore our beloved Republic to greatness and to rescue our Nation from those who seek its ruin,' Trump said in a statement released Sunday night after he returned to Washington, reported AP.
He also hailed doctors, first responders and rallygoers who helped guide other attendees to safety, saying, 'These men and women arrived at the rally grounds as ordinary Americans, but left as heroes.'
The assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania was, in many respects, the result of multiple security failures that enabled 20-year-old Michael Thomas Crooks to scale a nearby building and fire eight shots at the former and future president. One person in the crowd was killed, two others were injured, and a bullet grazed Trump's ear before a Secret Service counter-sniper fatally shot Crooks.
The incident sent shockwaves through an already turbulent presidential race.
Chelsea, of the English Premier League, dominated the FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday, racing out to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Two goals from Cole Palmer and one from João Pedro sealed the win and spoiled PSG's bid for a fourth major title this season.
Trump joined the players on the field after the match to congratulate the tournament's outstanding performers, present PSG players with their runner-up medals, and hand Chelsea their championship trophy.
'It was an upset today I guess,' Trump told reporters after flying back to Washington following Chelsea's victory, as per AP. 'But it was a great match.'
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were greeted with cheers as they arrived at the stadium just ahead of a pre-match performance by musical artists Robbie Williams and Laura Pausini. A brief appearance on the stadium's mega-screen was met with a mix of cheers and boos.
The president waved to the crowd and pumped his fist as he and his entourage arrived at the stadium luxury box. There, they took in the match with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and his wife, Leena Al Ashqar.
Other guests spotted in the president's suite included Attorney General Pam Bondi, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, NFL great Tom Brady and media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

India-US Trade Deal: Aug 1 Deadline Nears... Will The Deal Be Sealed In Time? Piyush Goyal Shares Major Update

New Delhi: A small group of Indian trade negotiators has landed in Washington this week. Their task is urgent. They must try, once again, to untangle the long-pending India-U.S. trade deal that has seen too many rounds, too many delays and now stares down a hard deadline, August 1. The clock is ticking. U.S. President Donald Trump, now in his second term at the White House, has already fired off tariff letters to a long list of countries. Japan, Brazil, South Korea, Thailand and Cambodia, each has received a note – explaining in clear terms why new tariffs are coming. India has not received one. That is only because New Delhi and Washington are still talking. But if there is no deal before the deadline, the letter could arrive. Where Are The Talks Stuck? Washington wants India to lower its tariffs on American agricultural and dairy goods. Milk, wheat, poultry and genetically modified soy, all are on the table. New Delhi, however, is not moving. India's position has been clear. Its farm sector, dairy cooperatives, food security architecture, they cannot take a hit. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has said any agreement must benefit both sides. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has echoed that line. No pressure. No compromise on farmers. No backdoor trade-offs. So far, India has kept these sectors out of most trade deals, including with the United Kingdom and Australia. The same applies here. Indian Team Lands in Washington Led by Special Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, the Indian delegation is back in the U.S. capital, hoping to break the deadlock. The goal is to find a formula, something that can be signed off before Trump's August 1 deadline kicks in and the United States begins slapping tariffs across the board. Goyal says talks are moving 'at speed'. Speaking to reporters, he confirmed that the Indian side is focused on crafting an agreement that works for both countries. There is still time. Barely two weeks. But the message is that the window will not stay open for long. Trump's Tariff Playbook Trump is playing hardball again. Twenty-five countries have already been hit with his new tariff regime. Canada was slapped with 35 percent. Others have seen higher. But in India's case, the U.S. president has dropped a telling hint. While speaking about his global tariff strategy, he said that 'key trading partners' may see lower tariffs, around 15 to 20 percent. And not every country will get a formal letter. It is a signal that if India clinches the deal, it may escape the harshest penalties. Why India Won't Budge On Dairy & Agriculture Behind India's tough stance lies a deeper concern. According to a recent report from the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), any wide-scale entry of subsidised U.S. dairy or poultry goods could damage India's rural economy. Not only small farmers but food security itself could be hit. The report warns against opening the gates to American grain or genetically modified soybeans. Once these products enter Indian markets, they could displace local produce and crush pricing structures. This is not only about trade margins, this is about the long-term sustainability of Indian agriculture. Can A Deal Still Happen? If all goes well in Washington, negotiators may stitch together a limited package. It will not be a full-blown foreign trade agreement (FTA). But it could be enough to avoid Trump's tariff stick. Enough to show progress. Enough to keep the trade lanes open. A senior official said that a breakthrough is still possible before August 1. But it depends on what each side is willing to give, and what each insists on keeping off the table. Until then, all eyes remain on the U.S. capital.

"Some Stupid Republicans..." Trump Shuts Down MAGA, Calls Epstein Files A "Hoax" By Democrats

President Trump slammed'foolish Republicans' who he said were aiding Democrats by focusing on documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Trump claimed that the documents connected to Epstein were a 'hoax' started by Democrats. Prominent Republicans and Trump supporters, including Speaker Mike Johnson, have in recent days called for greater transparency from the administration around files related to Epstein's case. Rep. Lauren Boebert, an ardent Trump supporter, called for a special counsel to review the administration's handling of the Epstein files. But Trump has in recent days appeared exasperated by the fixation. He has said Attorney General Pam Bondi can release 'credible' evidence related to Epstein. n18oc_world n18oc_crux

"Highly Unlikely" Trump Denies Plans To Fire Federal Reserve Chair Powell, Unless 'Fraud' Was Found

Hours after President Donald Trump told a room full of Republican lawmakers that he will fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, he denied plans to do that. 'We're not planning on doing it,' he said at the White House. 'I don't rule out anything,' he added, 'but I think it's highly unlikely, unless he has to leave for fraud.' Powell has said repeatedly that his firing is 'not permitted under the law.' No president ever has attempted to fire the country's top central banker, though others have criticized prior Fed chairs. n18oc_world n18oc_crux
