Foreign man caught with 56-year-old sex worker in mid-day raid
The man, who allegedly paid RM40 for a 30-minute session, was detained during the 12.50pm raid at one of four old premises flagged by the authorities for operating as venues for paid sex.
In a statement, JAINJ said the woman was among more than 10 ageing non-Muslim prostitutes found waiting for customers during the sting operation in the heart of Muar.
"Several male Muslim clients managed to flee the scene after being tipped off by a caretaker," the department said.
The premises, believed to have been operating for years, were said to be frequented by foreign men living apart from their families.
The detained suspect is expected to be charged at the Muar Syariah Court under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment for engaging in immoral acts. The non-Muslim woman was released.
"JAINJ has conducted numerous such operations in the past, leading to the arrest and prosecution of both local and foreign offenders," the department added.

Oil falls as Iran affirms commitment to nuclear treaty
NEW DELHI: Oil futures fell on Friday after Iran reaffirmed its commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and amid expectations that major producers are set to agree to raise their output this weekend. Brent crude futures were down 22 cents, or 0.32 per cent, to $68.58 a barrel by 0445 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude fell 12 cents, or 0.18 per cent, to $66.88. Trade was thinned by the US Independence Day holiday. US news website Axios reported on Thursday that the US was planning to meet with Iran next week to restart nuclear talk, while Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran remains committed to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. "Thursday's news that the US is preparing to resume nuclear talks with Iran, and Araqchi's clarification that cooperation with the UN atomic agency has not been halted considerably eases the threat of a fresh outbreak of hostilities," said Vandana Hari, founder of oil market analysis provider Vanda Insights. Araqchi's comments came a day after Tehran enacted a law suspending cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency. "But the price correction may have to wait till Monday, when the US reopens from a long weekend and takes in Sunday's OPEC+ decision, which is likely to be another 411,000 barrels per day target hike in August," Hari said. OPEC+, the world's largest group of oil producers, is set to announce an increase of 411,000 bpd in production for August as it looks to regain market share, four delegates from the group told Reuters. Meanwhile, uncertainty over US tariff policies was renewed as the end of a 90-day pause on higher levy rates approaches. President Donald Trump told reporters before departing for Iowa yesterday (July 4) that the letters would be sent to 10 countries at a time, laying out tariff rates of 20 per cent to 30 per cent. Elephant wrecks homestay and orchard in Baling village
BALING: Residents of Kampung Bukit Hijau are living in fear after a wild elephant ran amok, damaging a homestay and fruit crops over the past few days. Villager Idris Yaakob, 57, said the incident was discovered by the homestay owner when he went to check on his durian orchard in the area on Sunday. Idris said various items, including a washing machine were trampled and destroyed, while fruit trees such as cempedak, rambutan, banana, sugarcane and coconut were also damaged. "The homestay owner doesn't live there. His house is in a residential area in Pekan Baling but he often visits to tend to his fruit trees. That's when he realised the extent of the damage, believed to have occurred since Saturday. "It's fruit season now and the elephant came for the fruits. The homestay is located on a hill not far from the Gunung Inas Forest Reserve and about 500m from the nearest houses. "Since Saturday, the elephant has been showing up almost every night from around 11pm until the early hours," he said when contacted today. Idris said the village, which has more than 600 residents, mostly comprises rubber tappers, many of whom are now afraid to leave their homes for work in the early morning. "So far, only the homestay, one other house and fruit crops belonging to Shafie, a schoolteacher, have been damaged. "But the villagers are worried the elephant will return as there are many fruit trees in the area and the fruits are ripening," he said. Idris said the damage is estimated at over RM40,000, including losses from the homestay, crops and electric fencing which was also destroyed. He added that villagers now avoid going out at night and keep their doors and windows tightly shut, fearing another visit by the elephant.
