Oman Authorities recover missing fisherman's body in Taqah
The man had gone fishing with his brother last Tuesday when their boat was overturned by high waves. While his brother managed to swim to safety and was taken to Taqah Hospital for medical treatment, the missing individual could not be located until today.
The search operation was a collaborative effort involving the Royal Oman Police, the Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority, the Royal Air Force of Oman, and local citizens. Authorities express their condolences to the family and continue urging caution for those engaging in marine activities, particularly in rough sea conditions.

Funding agreement inked for "Qahwan Pathway" project in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate
Sur: The South Al Sharqiyah Governorate signed a funding agreement for the "Qahwan Pathway" project in the Wilayat of Ja'alan Bani Bu Hassan, in partnership with the Development Foundation of Oman Liquefied Natural Gas Company, with funding amounting to OMR1,995,450. The agreement was signed on behalf of the governorate by Dr. Yahya Badr Al Maawali, Governor of South A'Sharqiyah, and on behalf of the foundation by Dr. Amer Nasser Al Muta'ani, Chief Executive Officer of the Development Foundation. This step reinforces the path toward sustainable local development and activates institutional partnerships between the public and private sectors, aligning with the priorities of Oman Vision 2040—particularly in governorate development and improving quality of life. The project is a qualitative initiative that combines environmental, health, social, and economic dimensions, covering a total area of 466,080.29 square metres. Designed with a built-up area of 1,730 square metres, it will serve as an integrated public facility catering to the needs of the local community and visitors while contributing to tangible added value. In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Eng. Abdullah Salim Al Hajri, Director General of South A'Sharqiyah Municipality, explained that the project will enhance economic and social activity in the wilayat, providing diverse opportunities that support local initiatives and community empowerment. He emphasised the project's role in stimulating individual and institutional initiatives, as well as fostering a business-friendly environment, which will reflect positively on quality of life and local prosperity. He also affirmed that the project will create an attractive space for community events and boost domestic tourism, as it is designed to host various activities and festivals. On the health front, he noted that the "Qahwan Pathway" will provide an open and safe public space for physical activities, promoting healthy lifestyles through an inclusive design that accommodates all groups, including the elderly and people with disabilities.

Shoppers buy ‘green' bags as third phase of plastic ban rolls out
MUSCAT: Shoppers in Muscat were taken aback when they discovered on Wednesday that some supermarkets had stopped giving plastic bags with the items they had purchased. 'When I paid for the products, I had to purchase a green bag for 125 baisas at a supermarket in Ruwi as I was left with no other choice than to carry the products to my car without the bag,' said Sujata, an Indian expat living in Rex Road. This comes after Oman rolled out the third phase of its plastic bag ban on Tuesday, July 1, in accordance with the approved timeline in Decision No. (8/2024). Officials said if the regulations are violated, they can be fined ranging from OMR50 to OMR1,000. The Environment Authority (EA) said that the activities in this phase included sale of vegetables, fruits, grocery, foodstuffs, sweets, gifts and bakery stores. Regarding the alternatives, the Environment Authority suggested use of fabric bags and paper bags. The EA issued a statement, highlighting the long-term dangers of single-use plastic bags on marine life and the broader environment. 'A single plastic bag may seem harmless, but it leaves a profound impact on marine life and our environment for decades! Your simple decision to use sustainable alternatives makes a big difference,' it stated. The EA detailed the consequences of plastic pollution on ocean ecosystems. 'Fish, turtles, and whales may mistake plastic bags for food and swallow them, leading to suffocation or blockages in their digestive systems, which can result in death. Then the marine creatures like turtles or birds may get entangled in plastic bags, causing them to suffocate or suffer serious injuries,' it said. Sujit Kumar went to the supermarket to get essentials as he was expecting some guests at his home for lunch on Wednesday. 'I went to the supermarket to buy some juices and food packets but the person at the billing counter reminded me of the plastic bags directive from July 1.' Similarly, Sohail, a Pakistani expat, had been to a nearby supermarket in Qurum to shop for his daily essentials. Without knowledge of the ban, he purchased his monthly groceries, but he did not have any bags to carry the items. Therefore, he had to purchase a reusable bag. 'From now on, I will be keeping these bags in my car and whenever I go shopping, I will use them,' added Sohail. Phase one of the plastic ban was implemented on July 1, 2024, targeting single-use plastic bags thinner than 50 micrometres. The second phase began on January 1, 2025, and it included textile shops, tailoring shops, mobile shops, watch shops, retailers, etc. The third phase was introduced from July 1, 2025.

Social Development Ministry joins Global Network QABA
Muscat: Represented by the National Autism Centre, the Ministry of Social Development has joined the QABA board (Qualified Applied Behaviour Analysis Credentialing Board) as the first full member in the Arab region. The step reflects the Sultanate of Oman's commitment to improve the quality of services provided to individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Full membership is granted to qualified institutions in recognition of their professional practices and integrated infrastructure of behavioural services. It offers the members priority in joining international partnerships and advanced training, with chances of upgrading to the status of 'accredited supervisory bodies' or 'approved staff field training institutions'.
