Melaka Customs foils smuggling of imported rice, ciggies, liquor worth over RM6 million
Its director, Nadzri Che Ani said his department seized 28 containers holding 623,000 kilogrammes (kg) of rice, estimated to be worth RM5.23 million including tax duty, at Port Klang, Selangor on Jan 20 and Feb 6.
'A check on Customs Form 1 found that the goods were declared as 'sodium chloride' (salt) and the inspection found that each container held a total of 70 sacks of white powder (salt) and 445 sacks of rice.
'The sacks containing rice were fraudulently hidden at the back and the sacks of salt were placed at the front of the container door,' he said at a press conference here today.
Elaborating further, Nadzri said that the goods were likely imported from India for the local market and the owner of the importer company and shipping agent were detained for further investigation.
He stated that rice is classified as a prohibited item under Item 25, Third Schedule/Part 1 of the Customs (Prohibition on Imports) Order 2023 and the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967.
Meanwhile, he said JKDM also seized liquor, worth RM499,621 including duty, in raids at two locations on March 7 and April 11 in Johor Bahru.
'In the operation, a total of 8,585 litres of liquor were seized from three multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs). A physical inspection of the seized goods showed that the liquor had a 'Malaysian Duty Not Paid' status and was an abuse of the exemption given in the (Forest City) duty-free island area,' he said.
Meanwhile, Nadzri said his party also seized a total of 1.1 million cigarettes, worth RM822,800 including duties, in Muar, Johor on April 5 which were stored in an unoccupied warehouse in a durian orchard.
He said the offences in all three cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
'JKDM also calls on the public to cooperate by providing information regarding any smuggling activities by contacting the Customs toll-free line number at 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest Customs office in all states,' he said.

PASIR MAS: The Kelantan Immigration Department has detected the existence of a handful of agents believed to be using fake stamps to manage the entry of Thai workers into the country. Its director Mohamed Yusoff Khan Mohd Hassan said the anomaly was detected after his department detained six road tour vehicles that entered the country through the Rantau Panjang Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex. He said during the operation carried out this afternoon, immigration checked a total of 42 Thai nationals, comprising 21 men and 21 women, aged between 20 and 30. 'From the inspection, we found that the stamp on the passport of a male driver in his 20s was suspicious because there was no exit stamp from Thai immigration. He was detained while the other two did not have any valid travel documents,' he said here on Tuesday (August 5). Mohamed Yusoff Khan said the stamp on the passport owned by one of the drivers was suspected to be fake and irregular and the case is being investigated under Section 56(1)(i) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. He added that two other Thai nationals were also arrested for entering the country via an illegal route by crossing Sungai Golok before boarding a rented vehicle heading to the Klang Valley and Kuala Lumpur. He said both of them were being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and would undergo a documentation process to identify the offences and the modus operandi they used to cross the border. 'Investigations also revealed that some of the Thai nationals who were checked actually had passports, but chose to take the risk of crossing the Sungai Golok without reasonable excuse,' he said. According to him, each Thai national is believed to have paid about RM80 each to an agent to be sent to the Klang Valley. 'Most of them work in tomyam restaurants and the construction sector. For those with valid documents, we allow them to continue their journey after inspection,' he said. - Bernama

Kelantan Immigration uncovers use of fake passport stamps by worker agents
RANTAU PANJANG: The state Immigration Department has detected a small number of agents managing the entry of Thai workers into Malaysia who are suspected of using fake passport stamps. State Immigration director Mohamed Yusoff Khan Mohamad Hassan said the discovery was made following the inspection of six "roadtour" vans. He said the vehicles entered the country through the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex here. "In the operation conducted this afternoon, we inspected a total of 42 Thais after stopping the vehicles in which they were travelling. "Checks revealed that the passport of one of the drivers had Immigration stamps that looked suspicious and lacked an entry stamp from Thai authorities. "The driver has since been detained for further investigations," he told reporters here today. Yusoff said the two-hour operation which began at 5.30pm, involved more than 20 officers. He said the Thais, mostly women, were being held for questioning. The foreigners were heading to Kuala Lumpur to work when arrested by Immigration officers. All have been sent to the department's enforcement office in Kota Baru for documentation.

Op Taring: GOF Sarawak seizes RM3.6 mln in contraband in 10 operations
Illicit cigarettes discovered inside a car during a house raid in Sibu. KUCHING (Aug 4): The General Operations Force (GOF) Sarawak Brigade has seized various types of contraband estimated to be worth RM3.6 million in 10 separate operations under Op Taring conducted between July 21 and Aug 1. In a statement today, GOF Sarawak Brigade commander SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said the largest haul was made on July 21 at around 1.45pm during Op Taring Alpha by the Intelligence Branch of GOF Sibu Battalion 10. He said the operation involved a raid on a house in Sibu, suspected to be used as a storage facility for cigarettes and liquor that had not received customs clearance. 'The raid led to the discovery of 783, 040 sticks of cigarettes of various brands, as well as 225.12 litres of liquor and a car — all estimated to be worth RM1.4 million, based on market value. 'A local man aged 43 was also arrested during the raid,' he said. He said the seized items were handed over to the Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action, and the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. Che Ghazali said the second largest haul occurred on Aug 1, where a team from the GOF Sarawak Brigade Kuching office detained four lorries heading towards the Malaysia-Indonesia border in Bau, believed to be carrying controlled goods without valid permits. 'The team confiscated 35,000 kilogrammes (kg) of bombay onions and 1,400 kgs of garlic, as well as four lorries used to carry the contraband — amounting to RM1.12 million. 'Four local men aged between 24 and 54 were also arrested,' he explained. He said the case has been handed over to the Ministry of Domestic Trade Kuching branch for further action under Section 21 of the Control of Supply Act 1961 and Section 23(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. GOF Sarawak also raided eight other premises throughout Sarawak, resulting in an estimated RM1.08 million worth of confiscated contraband.
