Himachal Electricity Regulatory Commission chief Devendra Kumar Sharma elected president of International Commission on Large Dams
ICOLD, with 106 member countries including India, facilitates global exchange of knowledge on dam planning, design, construction, and safety. Established in 1928, it provides a platform for advancing dam engineering practices, promoting safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility in dam construction and operation.
India has been a member since 1930, and Sharma is only the second Indian to be elected president in the organisation's history. He served as vice-president of ICOLD in 2019 in Ottawa, Canada.
In an address to ICOLD member countries following his election, Sharma said his appointment from a developing country signified a shift in the organisation's outlook. He said he would work on dam safety, gender diversity, participation of under-represented national committees, challenges of climate change for dams, hydropower development in underutilised regions, capacity building, and knowledge exchange.
Hailing from Mehrin Kathla (Khasri) village in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur district, Sharma has over 43 years of experience in the energy and water resources sectors in India and abroad. He is also a member of the National Security Advisory Board under the National Security Council.
Before joining the regulatory commission, he served as chairman of the Bhakra Beas Management Board, managing critical national assets including major dams and powerhouses. From 2012 to 2017, he was managing director of Himachal Power Corporation Ltd, a state public sector undertaking.

School merger row: Uttar Pradesh Primary Teachers' Assn calls for statewide protest on July 8
The Uttar Pradesh Primary Teachers' Association on Sunday intensified its criticism of the state government's school merger policy, claiming that the basic education department's decision to close all schools with fewer than 50 students will hinder rural children's easy access to education. The UP government rubbished the concerns of the primary teachers' association on school closure. (FOR REPRESENTATION) To press their demands, the association has urged all stakeholders to stage a sit-in (dharna) at the district basic education office concerned across the state on July 8. Dinesh Chandra Sharma, president of the primary teachers' association, alleged that the state government, by merging or pairing schools in the name of consolidating infrastructure and manpower, is depriving children aged 6 to 14 of free and compulsory education. He further alleged that the state government is eliminating the post of headmaster in primary schools with up to 149 students and upper primary schools with up to 99 students. This plan, which effectively means running schools without headmasters, ends opportunities for teacher promotions. 'Due to the closure of schools, the services of thousands of cooks will come to an end and the DlEd/BTC qualified candidates hoping to become teachers in the future will not be able to get recruited,' Sharma said. Sharma also said the UP government should roll back its decision to merge schools. 'Our demand is that no school should be closed. If the government really wants the benefit of education, then one assistant teacher should be appointed for every class and one headmaster in every school,' he said. All the affected stakeholders are requested to attend the proposed dharna at the office of the district basic education officer concerned on July 8 and support their demands, he added. The UP government, however, rubbished the concerns of the primary teachers' association on school closure. 'We're effectively implementing the adjustment of teachers in government schools of the state under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE, 2009),' a spokesperson said. Justice Pankaj Bhatia of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Friday reserved judgment in the merger of schools case after hearing the matter for two days. During the hearing, the petitioner sought a stay on the government order for merger of primary schools. The state government justified its decision. Hearing in the case began on Thursday

Lhakpa Tsering hails Dalai Lama, says
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 6 (ANI): The Dalai Lama's 90th birthday celebration was marked with great enthusiasm, with the Chief Representative Officer of the Central Tibetan Government in Exile, Lhakpa Tsering highlighting the Tibetan spiritual leader's 14th Dalai Lama's contributions to global peace and harmony. Speaking to ANI, Lhakpa Tsering said, 'He is not only a religious leader but also a peace promoter across the world, and he usually promotes human value, religious harmony, Tibetan culture, and ancient Indian traditions.' The celebration underscores the long-standing relationship between India and Tibet, with the Deputy CM of Himachal Pradesh, Mukesh Agnihotri, saying, 'India and Tibet have a long relationship and history in culture and tradition.' Lhakpa Tsering also acknowledged India's support, stating, 'India was the first country to welcome us when we crossed the borders.' Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, along with other dignitaries and well-wishers, attended the celebration. Dalai Lama celebrated his 90th birthday in Dharamshala on Sunday with an address focusing on the values of compassion, service, and the Bodhichitta way of life. Speaking before a gathering at the Tsuglagkhang temple, he reflected on his spiritual journey and urged everyone to follow a path of kindness and selflessness. In his speech, the Dalai Lama spoke about the importance of love, unity and service to others. 'As far as I am concerned, I have a human life. As humans, it is natural for us to have love in our hearts for one another and to help one another. Since we came from a country where the Buddhist religion and spirituality have spread, there is a strong sense of brotherhood and sisterhood amongst us. The main practice is, as said in the Bodhisattva way of life -- considering all beings as my friends and relatives, and I always think of serving beings with the best of my abilities,' he said. He thanked the gathering for attending the celebration with joy and warmth. 'Today, my dear Dharma friends, and to all my friends, I wish to say that it is my 90th birthday celebration, and you have happily and with great excitement gathered here and with joy in our hearts. I would like to thank you for that. So, on this 90th birthday celebration of mine, you have come here with great joy in your heart. So thank you,' he said. On the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama's birthday, heartfelt messages poured in from world leaders, politicians, lawmakers, and artists in a video compiled by Tibet TV, which is run by the Tibetan government-in-exile, CNN reported.
