
Charges laid in crash that killed two Kitchener residents
On Jan. 27, a commercial vehicle and a passenger vehicle collided at the intersection of Grey Road 9 and Southgate Sideroad 71, just west of Dundalk, Ont.
A 49-year-old and 15-year-old from Kitchener were killed, while a 19-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries. OPP did not identify the victims.
Police said the driver of a commercial vehicle, 52-year-old Nirmal Kumar of Brampton, was arrested.
He has since been charged with two counts of dangerous operation causing death, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, three counts of driving a commercial vehicle with a major defect, improperly driving a commercial vehicle with a minor defect, failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report, four counts of failing to indicate a defect in a daily inspection report, failing to report a defect to operation, driving a commercial vehicle without the required inspection, driving a vehicle without a validated permit, having an obstructed window, having an improper means of attachment and a push rod stroke exceeding the prescribed limit.
The driver had a court date scheduled for July 10 in Owen Sound.
The owner of the commercial vehicle was also charged. The 41-year-old from Bolton is facing:three counts of failure to ensure performance standards were met, failure to ensure daily inspection was conducted properly, and failure to ensure a daily inspection report is accurately completed.
