Apple's ‘AI push' could mean smart glasses arrive as soon as 2026

Tom's Guide22-05-2025
According to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is seeking to release a set of smart glasses by end of 2026 as part of a "push into AI-enhanced gadgets."
The Apple Glasses, meant to take on the Meta Ray-Ban glasses and any upcoming products built on the Android XR platform that Google showed off this week, have entered a ramped up development to meet the target date. Prototypes should be produced by the end of this year, the Bloomberg report claims.
With OpenAI buying former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive's company (which he started with OpenAI's Sam Altman) to build the 'iPhone of AI' it seems the Cupertino giant is feeling the pressure.
In April, it was reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook is "obsessed" with launching a pair of Apple Glasses.
Like other smart glasses, the Apple version is supposed to feature cameras, microphones and speakers. Coupled with Apple Intelligence and Siri, they could potentially analyze the external world and take on tasks like music playback, live translations, and phone calls.
Gurman claims that Apple wants its glasses to use augmented reality (AR) to use displays and other tech to show digital content on the lens, but that feature might not come any time soon.
Allegedly, Apple's Vision Products Group, makers of the Vision Pro headset, will develop this product. And while they are working on a new version of Apple's spatial computing headset, apparently, Glasses are getting the bulk of the focus.

The group is supposed to be helping design a chip meant for smart glasses, which might launch next year.
Much of Apple's future plans depend on the company bolstering Apple Intelligence, something the company has struggled with since its take on AI was announced in June of 2024.
A number of reports have come out in the last few months that claim that Apple couldn't get its priorities in order especially when it comes to Siri.
Recently, Apple has started to open up its walled garden by allowing third-party LLMs to help bolster Apple Intelligence alongside ChatGPT which is already integrated with Siri.
For the rumored glasses to succeed in the way Apple wants, the company will have to offer a more robust version of its AI tools, including a smarter version of its personal assistant. That could happen with the iOS 19 update likely to arrive later this year. Not only will iOS 19 offer a redesign for Apple's iPhone software, it's supposed to give Apple Intelligence a boost.
There have been rumors that Apple was working on an Apple Watch or Apple Watch Ultra that would feature a camera; however, Gurman claims those plans have been squashed.
A rumored AirPods update that would feature built-in cameras is still in the works. Reportedly, those earbuds would launch next year as well.
Next year could be big for Apple with new products and overhauled classics. Apple's first foldable phone should also launch late next year.

Is MP Materials Stock Your Ticket to Becoming a Millionaire?

Key Points The company has become a key geostrategic partner for the Department of Defense. The game-changing deal with the government has secured MP Materials' future. It will help ensure the availability of rare-earth materials for both defense and commercial needs in the U.S. Execution and political risks are not insignificant here, and shareholders could face further dilution. 10 stocks we like better than MP Materials › MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is a unique company with a crucial role to play in America's defense policy and its geostrategic positioning. Currently, it's the only company operating a rare-earth mine and processing facility in the U.S., and it has recently become a partner of the Department of Defense and Apple. Does that make it a stock likely to turn investors into millionaires over time? MP Materials stock is on a roll There's no other way to put it. The stock is up a whopping 305% year to date as of the time of writing, and took off after the recent DOD deal was announced on July 10, with another leg up in the share price occurring after the Apple agreement was announced on July 15. The good news just kept coming for MP Materials as a $500 million stock offering on July 16 saw strong demand, leading to an upsize offering of $650 million worth of stock priced at $55. For reference, the stock price at the time of writing is $63.22. Sentiment is very optimistic over MP Materials, but can it last? Why rare-earth materials matter To understand that question, you have to look at the deals and put them into the context of the U.S.'s need to secure a reliable domestic provision of rare earths and rare-earth magnets -- essential materials used in mobile phones, computers, wind turbines, electric vehicles, drones, missiles, and many other applications. Brazil, India, Russia, China, and Vietnam dominate the market share of global reserves. Not only does China dominate reserves, but it also dominates rare-earth element production, holding a 70% global share, and refined production, with an 87% share. The reliance on China's rare-earth magnets (the most common use for rare earth elements) is such that export to the U.S. surged by 660% in June compared to May after a trade deal with China resulted in a resumption of imports to the U.S. This is an uncomfortable position for the U.S., and it's also somewhat problematic, at least over the near term, for MP Materials because according to its latest 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), "Currently, the Company sells the vast majority of its rare-earth concentrate to Shenghe Resources (Singapore) International Trading Pte. Ltd.," a subsidiary of a Chinese company, Shenghe Resources. It's no coincidence that the U.S. signed a mineral deal with Ukraine and President Donald Trump has mooted the possibility of acquiring Greenland, a country with substantive rare-earth reserves. It's also the reason behind the game-changing deal with MP Materials, which creates a highly unusual public-private partnership through the DOD. Game-changing MP Materials deals The DOD is investing $400 million in preferred convertible MP Materials stock (which could result in it owning 15% of the company) and providing a $150 million loan. At the same time, the department has agreed to ensure that all the rare-earth magnets produced at a to-be-built facility ("10X Facility") will be purchased by "defense and commercial customers with shared upside." Additionally, the DOD has established a price floor commitment of $110 per kilogram of NdPr (Neodymium-Praseodymium) that MP Materials sells or stockpiles. As such, the department has acted to secure the future earnings and cash flow. With known revenue streams and price floors, it has made it easier to raise capital for its magnet manufacturing facility. JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs have steeped in with a $1 billion loan in addiiton to the $650 million equity raise. The deal also influenced an agreement with Apple for the tech giant to invest $500 million ($200 million prepaid) for rare-earth magnet supply from an MP Materials facility in Texas. Is MP Materials a millionaire maker? The securing of MP Materials' mining and magnet manufacturing facility is a significant plus and likely to lead to more interest and deals from American companies looking to secure rare-earth magnet provisions. At the same time, it's incredibly challenging to predict the future prices of rare-earth materials and magnets, particularly if you are seeking upside from the DOD price floor. Similarly, building a major facility entails execution risk, which could lead to additional equity raises that dilute existing shareholders. Moreover, there's always political risk to consider when the public sector takes a share in a private company. These factors could limit the upside, and while MP Materials has significant upside potential, there are too many complicating factors to confidently conclude that this is a stock that will make millionaires of ordinary investors. More AI is coming to Samsung phones, but from unexpected places

Samsung was one of the first smartphone makers to go all-in with AI, thanks to the Galaxy AI stack. The Galaxy flagships didn't only ship the usual Gemini features, but also delivered their own unique AI experiences with tools like Now Bar, Now Brief, and Interpreter, among others. The company has no plans of stopping there. On the contrary, Samsung is eyeing deals with more AI companies to serve their AI tools atop Galaxy smartphones — at the cost of stealing some spotlight away from Google's Gemini. According to a report by Bloomberg, Perplexity and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI are two of those potential candidates. Why does this matter? 'We are talking to multiple vendors. As long as these AI agents are competitive and can provide the best user experiences, we are open to any AI agent out there,' Won-joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Samsung's MX Business, was quoted as saying. The shift is pretty interesting and something that is going to worry Google for multiple reasons. Recommended Videos As part of the Justice Department's antitrust case, it was reported that Google was paying an 'enormous' sum to Samsung. The fee was paid as a revenue share for onboarding paid subscribers, and also on a monthly basis for each Galaxy device that came pre-installed with the Gemini app. Interestingly, Samsung was also approached by other companies with similar offers, a list that includes names such as Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI. How soon Samsung phones integrate AI products from other companies remains to be seen, but it would certainly be a big blow to Google. Over the past few years, Google executives have appeared on the launch stage for flagship Samsung devices. Moreover, as recently as its I/O event in May, Google heavily showcased Samsung's phones to reveal its upcoming Android and AI features. Samsung's status as the biggest name in the smartphone world is definitely a key part of the equation here. What's next for Google and Gemini? Google's Pixel phones are the best showcase of what AI (read: Gemini) can accomplish on a phone. But Google's smartphones are nowhere near as popular in terms of market reception and sales volumes are Samsung's Galaxy phones. That's why finding a prominent place for Gemini on Galaxy phones was such a big deal. But the challenge has already started right in the Android ecosystem. Perplexity, which offers a product that aims to compete with Google Search and Gemini, inked a deal with Nothing last year to offer its Pro subscription for free. Earlier this year, another deal with Motorola ensured that Perplexity would come pre-installed on Motorola devices. The company has also revealed that its AI-focused browser called Comet will soon land on Apple and Android smartphones. Perplexity was also rumored to be on Apple's potential list of partners as the company struggles to push Siri in the same league as ChatGPT and Gemini. As a stopgap solution, Apple inked a deal with OpenAI that allows Siri to seamlessly work with ChatGPT for advanced queries. With Samsung also exploring rival AI products for Galaxy smartphones, it would be interesting to see how aggressive Google gets at pushing Gemini on mobile devices.
