Greek court rejects extradition request for US national accused of running child exploitation site

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — A court in Greece has rejected an U.S. extradition request for a 21-year-old American man wanted in connection with an online network that is alleged to have targeted children for acts of violence and sexual exploitation. Court officials in the northern city of Thessaloniki said Wednesday that the claim was rejected because the suspect has applied for and is eligible to receive Greek citizenship. He was due to be released from custody this week. A panel of judges upheld the claim 'that the extradition of a Greek national is forbidden, acknowledging his Greek citizenship by virtue of being the child of a Greek parent,' the suspect's lawyer Xanthippi Moisidou told The Associated Press.
The suspect, who maintains his innocence, was arrested in April, accused by U.S. authorities of being involved in the criminal online group known as 764 that coerced children into committing acts of violence and sexual abuse, which were recorded and distributed online.
A second man was arrested in North Carolina days earlier as part of the same investigation.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi had described the suspects as being responsible for 'a network built on terror, abuse, and the deliberate targeting of children.'

Reps. Massie, Khanna sound off on whether Ghislaine Maxwell should receive pardon, blast Mike Johnson

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Ro Khanna, D-Ca., revealed on Sunday what they think of the Justice Department's interviews with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, and whether she should receive a pardon. "If she has information that could help us, then I think she should testify. Let's get that out there and [do] whatever they need to do to compel that testimony as long as it's truthful," Massie told NBC "Meet the Press" host Kristen Welker. DOJ Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche met with Maxwell on Thursday and Friday in the Attorney General of Tallahassee, Florida's office, after she allegedly initiated contact with the department. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for conspiring with Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse minors. Pressure on the Trump administration to release the so-called Epstein files has mounted in recent weeks after the DOJ released a two-page memo asserting that the evidence the federal government compiled did not contain a "client list" and that there was no "credible evidence" that the New York financier had blackmailed other prominent individuals. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said that some interpreted it as saying that a "client list" was "sitting on my desk." The AG later denied that she was referring to a client list and instead claimed she was referring to the Epstein case files. Much of the MAGA base was skeptical of the DOJ's claim and has demanded further transparency. The two representatives introduced the "Epstein Files Transparency Act" on July 15, which, if passed, would compel the federal government to release all the "Epstein files." Speaker Mike Johnson has opposed votes on Epstein-related legislation, and called the House to an early recess until September in order to avoid a floor vote on the legislation. When questioned if Maxwell should be pardoned or receive a commutation in exchange for her cooperating with the DOJ, Massie said that it would be up to the president. Khanna, however, came out sharply against such a deal. "I'm concerned that the Deputy Attorney General, Todd Blanch, is meeting with her supposedly one-on-one. Look, I agree with Congressman Massey that she should testify, but she's been indicted twice on perjury. This is why we need the files," Khanna said. Massie blasted Johnson for refusing to allow a vote on his bill, and warned that Republicans could suffer in the midterms if they fail to deliver transparency to the public on the Epstein issue. Johnson, for his part, has accused Massie of playing "political games" with the Epstein files. "I don't understand Thomas Massie's motivation, I really don't… It's interesting to me that he chose the election of Donald Trump, to bring this, to team up with the Democrats to bring this discharge petition… We're for maximum transparency, we're engaged in that right now, and we don't need political games," Johnson told reporters last week.

Police in Spain arrest schoolboy for making AI nude images of classmates

Spanish police said on Sunday they were investigating a 17-year-old on suspicion of using artificial intelligence to deepfake nude images of female classmates for sale. Sixteen young women at an educational institute in Valencia, in southeastern Spain, complained about the AI-generated images of them which were circulating on social media and online. In December, a teenage girl complained to police that AI-generated video and faked photos resembling her "completely naked" were posted on a social media account started under her name. 'Photos of various people, all of them minors, appeared on this account. All these photos had been modified from the originals, which had been manipulated so that the people in them appeared completely naked,' the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement on Sunday. A 17-year-old boy is under investigation for alleged corruption of minors. The Spanish government said in March said it would put forward a law to treat such deepfaked sexual imagery created by AI without consent as a crime but the bill has so far not been passed by parliament. In September 2023, Spain was shocked when 15 minors in Extremadura, in southwest Spain, were investigated for using AI to produce fake naked images of their female schoolmates. They were later sentenced to a year's probation.

The DOJ Told Trump He's in the Epstein Files: Report

The Justice Department told Donald Trump that his name appears in the government's files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The president's name appears in the files multiple times, according to senior administration officials who spoke to the Journal. Attorney General Pam Bondi informed Trump that his name appeared in the files during a meeting at the White House in May. She told him that several other notable figures appeared in the files, and that the files contained what they believed to be, as the Journal puts it, 'unverified hearsay' about people who had socialized with Epstein in the past, including the president. Trump was also told that the Justice Department would not release any additional information on Epstein because the files contain child pornography and the personal information of Epstein's victims. Trump said he would let the Justice Department handle the matter as they saw fit, the officials told the Journal. The Journal adds that FBI Director Kash Patel has privately told other government officials that Trump's name appears in the files. The Journal's report comes as the Trump administration struggles to tamp down MAGA outrage over their handling of the case. Earlier this month, the DOJ and FBI released a joint memo announcing they would be closing the administration's review of Epstein, affirming that the financier killed himself in jail, and declining to release additional material related to the case. The announcement triggered a revolt among the Republican base, which for months — if not years — had been teased with promises of transparency and additional prosecutions of individuals connected to Epstein once Trump returned to power. Trump has responded to the backlash by repeatedly calling the Epstein files a 'hoax,' claiming nonsensically that they were 'made up' by Barack Obama and other Democratic figures. He bashed his supporters who still care about the 'bullshit' case. The president this week launched an effort to redirect attention to conspiracy theories about the 2016 election, telling reporters on Tuesday that 'whether it's right or wrong, it's time to go after people,' citing Obama, whom he claimed is guilty of 'treason.' Trump has a long history with Epstein, and the two were friends for many years. Trump has bashed Epstein in recent years, but spoke glowingly of him while they were still on good terms. 'I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy,' Trump famously said in 2002. 'He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.' The Journal reported last week that he wrote the future convicted sex offender a salacious birthday note in the early 2000s, noting that the two have 'certain things in common.' Trump denied the report and sued the outlet days later. He's not likely to take kindly to the Journal now reporting that his name is in the Epstein files. Amid his ongoing feud with Trump, billionaire Elon Musk, a former Trump White House adviser, posted on X last month that Trump 'is in the Epstein files,' adding: 'That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!' ABC News asked Trump last week if Bondi had told him that his name appears in the Epstein files. 'No, no,' he said, adding that Bondi had handled the Epstein situation 'very well.'
