VTU to confer honourary doctorates on ISRO chairman, two others
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot will present these honoris casa Doctor of Science degrees at the Convocation-1 at the university campus in Belagavi on July 4. He will also award undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD degrees, as well as research degrees and integrated dual degrees to students.
Ajay Kumar Sood, Padmashri awardee and Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India will be the chief guest and deliver the convocation address. Minister for Higher Education M.C. Sudhakar will be present.
Over 60,600 degrees, including B.Tech, B.Plan, B.Arch, BSc Honours, research, PhD and integrated dual degrees will be presented. Vice-Chancellor S. Vidyashankar, Registrar (Evaluation) T.N. Sreenivasa and other officers were present at the press conference.
'VTU has taken several initiatives like facilitating research and teaching collaborations and faculty and student exchange with high-quality foreign HEIs, to promote Karnataka as a global study destination and internationalisation of education. It is set to help our students who wish to go to abroad for higher studies by announcing calendar of events in line with the International Academic Calendar so that our students will not face any hurdles and difficulties in admissions process at foreign universities,' Mr. Vidyashankar told reporters in Belagavi on Tuesday (July 1).
'In view of the above and also to avoid delay in award of degree certificates to graduates as many companies and public sector entities are instructing to submit degree certificates at the time of joining, University is planned to conduct two convocations in a year since 2023,'' he added.

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the state to not take any step against Padma Shri awardee Kartik Maharaj, who is facing rape allegations, until it hears the case. Justice Jay Sengupta's directive came as the accused moved court seeking protection after he was served a police summons. Kartik Maharaj's counsel pleaded for an in camera hearing. ‘No coercive steps till next hearing': Calcutta HC on rape case against Padma Shri awardee Kartyk Maharaj
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday stated that no 'coercive steps' would be taken against Padma Shri awardee Swami Pradiptananda, popularly known as Kartik Maharaj, until the next hearing in his case. The counsel for Kartik Maharaj had put in an application for an in-camera hearing in the matter, which Advocate General Kishore Dutta had objected to. The matter will be heard again on Monday. On Tuesday, Maharaj moved the Calcutta High Court to seek protection from coercive action and have an FIR against him quashed. He is accused of rape, multiple incidents of sexual assault, and forcing the alleged victim to have an abortion. The counsel mentioned the matter before Justice Joy Sengupta. Speaking to The Indian Express, counsel Kaustav Bagchi said, 'The submission of the Advocate General against the in-camera hearing shows how vindictive the state is and how they want to malign a Padma Shri awardee.' A monk of Bharat Sevashram Sangha in Murshidabad, Maharaj termed the complainant's allegations as 'baseless'. The complainant had filed a complaint with the Nabagram police station nearly 12 years after the alleged incidents began. She claimed that she met Maharaj in 2012, and that he offered her a teaching job. She claimed that she accepted the job and was allotted a room on the fifth floor of the school premises. She alleged that Maharaj would frequently summon her to his office and eventually sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions. In her complaint, she expressed concern that other women also may have faced similar ordeals. Nabagram police issued notice to Maharaj to appear for questioning on Tuesday, following which Maharaj approached the High Court.

Calcutta high court grants relief to Padma awardee monk in alleged rape case
Kolkata: The Calcutta high court on Wednesday directed the West Bengal government not to take any immediate action against 2025 Padma Shri awardee monk, Swami Pradiptananda, against whom the Murshidabad district police had filed a first information report (FIR) last week after a local woman accused him of rape, lawyers who were present in court said. Swami Pradiptananda, popularly known as Kartik Maharaj, is head of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha's Beldanga ashram in Murshidabad. Skipping a police summon for interrogation he moved the court on Tuesday, seeking quashing of the FIR. 'The bench of justice Jay Sengupta heard Kartik Maharaj's petition on Wednesday and directed the government not to take any immediate action on the basis of the FIR and wait for the hearing instead,' lawyer Koustav Bagchi, who represented the monk, told HT. Lawyer Sandipan Ganguly, who represented the alleged rape survivor, objected to the appeal for in-camera hearing, saying monks who faced similar charges in the past were tried in open court. Ganguly cited the example of Gujarat's Asaram Bapu. 'Reacting to this, the bench expressed surprise on why the Murshidabad woman did not file any complaint in 13 years,' Bagchi said. The woman has alleged in her complaint lodged at the Lalbagh police station that Swami Pradiptananda raped her repeatedly between 2012 and 2019 by promising her a job. She has alleged that she was forced to undergo an abortion in 2013. The woman has also claimed to have talked to the monk over the phone on June 12 and alleged that two men sent by him threatened her the following day. The monk has shared dais with Bharatiya Janata Party's Bengal leaders such as Suvendu Adhikari several times in recent months. In May 2024, chief minister Mamata Banerjee publicly accused him of helping the BJP in the then ongoing Lok Sabha polls. The monk sent a legal notice to Banerjee, demanding an unconditional apology, but she stuck to her allegations. The ruling Trinamool Congress unleashed a fresh attack on the monk after he moved the high court. Bengal BJP leaders have alleged that the TMC was trying to frame Kartik Maharaj with trumped up charges.
