Dozens pay tribute to Liverpool star Diogo Jota in Portugal
Jota, 28, and Andre Silva, 25, were killed on Thursday after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northwestern Spain and became engulfed in flames, just after the Portugal forward had got married.
A wake for the siblings was organised at a chapel in the Porto suburb of Gondomar on Friday before the funeral scheduled for 10:00 am (0900 GMT) on Saturday.
Close family and friends including the parents paid their respects first, with the grandfather propped up by two others to help him enter.
Mourners arrived carrying wreaths of flowers, some sobbing audibly, before the wake was opened to members of the public.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, Jota's agent Jorge Mendes and Porto club president Andre Villas-Boas were among the notable attendees paying condolences.
'Football is truly in mourning. Diogo was an icon of the talent Portuguese football represents,' said football federation chief Pedro Proenca.
At the Diogo Jota football academy, close to Gondomar SC where the ex-Porto and Atletico Madrid player took his first steps in the game, well-wishers created a memorial with flowers, scarves, candles and shirts.
'Thank you, Diogo Jota,' read a child's handwritten message, while mourners stood in silent contemplation.
Francisco Goncalves, a 66-year-old judicial officer, was still coming to terms with what he called a 'senseless disaster… no one understands what happened'.
– 'Left us too young' –
Pedro Neves, who was friends with Jota at school in Gondomar, said he 'will remember him as someone who was very friendly, very courteous, who loved everyone, who always had a smile on his face'.
'He left us too young, it's not fair. But that's how life is sometimes,' Neves, 31, told AFP.
At Porto's Estadio do Dragao, flags flew at half-mast and a photograph of Jota smiling and wearing the club's shirt was projected on a big screen.
Liverpool have opened a book of condolences and lowered flags to half-mast, with dozens of supporters laying a sea of flowers, balloons and Jota shirts outside Anfield.
A similar shrine was set up at the Molineux ground of his former Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
UK media reported Liverpool had postponed the start of pre-season training, while the reigning English champions confirmed ticket sales for a July 13 friendly had been suspended.
In London, Wimbledon relaxed its strict white-only dress code to allow Portuguese tennis player Francisco Cabral to wear a black ribbon in tribute to Jota.

The forward, however, has not changed his stance, which has been made clear to the club for some time. Isak has been absent from Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia, with sources, speaking anonymously as they were not authorised to do so publicly, saying the decision was the player's preference. The club cited a minor thigh problem for his absence.

Isak considers Newcastle exit: report
London – Alexander Isak has reportedly told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away as the club confirmed he was not part of the squad travelling to Asia for pre-season friendlies. The Daily Mail said Thursday that Newcastle bosses 'are aware of Isak's wish to consider his options this summer'. It came hours after the Saudi-owned Premier League club said the 25-year-old forward would miss the Asia tour 'with a minor thigh injury'. Isak's 23 Premier League goals last season made him one of the world's hottest properties and he has been linked with English champions Liverpool. The Mail said Liverpool were still interested in acquiring the Sweden international despite announcing the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike on Wednesday. Ekitike's arrival, for a reported initial fee of £69 million ($93 million), takes Liverpool's spending during the current transfer window to more than £250 million. Isak still has three years left on his contract at Newcastle, whom he joined in 2022 from Spanish side Real Sociedad. He was left out of Saturday's 4-0 defeat in a friendly at Celtic. But Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said at the time he was 'confident' that Isak would stay at St James' Park, adding that he expected him to be part of the Asia tour. 'It's difficult for me to give 100 percent clarity on any player,' he said. 'I'd never sit here and do that because it's football and you never know what could happen. 'All I can say is that Alex is happy at Newcastle. He loves the players that he plays with, the staff, the team.' Newcastle face Arsenal in Singapore on Sunday before flying to South Korea, where they will play a K League all-star team and Tottenham.

Arsenal sign Valencia defender Mosquera
London – Arsenal on Thursday announced the signing of Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera, taking their spending during the summer transfer window close to £140 million ($189 million). The Spain under-21 international joins for an initial fee of around £13 million, with performance-related add-ons, and is understood to have agreed a five-year deal with an option of a further year. The 21-year-old, Arsenal's fifth signing in recent weeks, is set to provide cover for William Saliba and Gabriel at the heart of the Gunners' defence, but can operate anywhere along the back line. Mosquera, who played 41 times for Valencia last season, has joined Arsenal for their tour of Singapore and Hong Kong. 'It means a lot to me,' he told the club website.
