Mother denies linking case to high-profile individuals
Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 Text Size: Noraidah Lamat Kuala Lumpur: The mother of Zara Qairina Mahathir, the student who died last month after reportedly falling at a boarding school in Papar, Sabah, has denied making any allegations linking her daughter's death to prominent individuals, according to a statement by her lawyers, as reported by Berita Harian. Zara Qairina, 14, was found critically injured beneath the dormitory building of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha at around 3am on July 16. She was pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. Preliminary findings suggested she had fallen from the third floor of the dormitory. Since the incident, speculation has swirled on social media — including unverified claims of bullying and attempts to associate the case with individuals linked to political figures. However, her lawyers, Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri, said their client, Noraidah Lamat, had never issued any statement implicating anyone in connection with her daughter's death. 'Noraidah has never mentioned any high-profile individual in relation to Zara's death. 'Any such assumptions or allegations are baseless and did not come from her,' the lawyers said in a statement quoted by Berita Harian on Saturday. They also refuted viral claims that a student was shouted at with the words 'you're a murderer' on the day of the incident, and that three students had been transferred out of the school that same day. Noraidah, they said, only learned of these claims after they began circulating online. The case is still under police investigation. So far, statements have been recorded from 60 witnesses, including three individuals whose nicknames have been widely shared on social media, Berita Harian reported. Istana Seri Kinabalu has also issued a firm denial, refuting social media rumours linking the case to the family of Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman. In the same statement, Noraidah's lawyers urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or speculating further on the case. 'Spreading false or baseless claims can interfere with the police investigation and defame innocent parties. Kota Kinabalu: A 44-second voice recording of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, speaking to her mother, Noraidah Lamat, 45, has gone viral, sparking renewed public concern over the circumstances leading to her death. In the audio clip, believed to have been recorded during a phone call prior to the incident, Zara is heard expressing fear about a certain student referred to as 'Kak M', whom she claimed had threatened her. 'Mak, Zara is scared of bumping into Kak M... That day I asked someone to help ask her sister... Ask Kak M if she still has a problem with me. Then Kak M said, 'Yes, I still haven't forgiven Zara,'' Zara is heard saying. Her mother is also heard asking whether Zara had erased her name, reportedly written in the school's Design and Technology (RBT) room. Zara responded, 'Mak, I erased it... then it was written again.' Zara also voiced anxiety over the possible consequences of the alleged threat. 'What if she does it again? That day she said, 'If I touch you, you'll start bleeding.' If she does it, Mak, what will happen?' she said. While the date of the recording has not been confirmed, it was mentioned by lawyers Ismail Hamid and Shahlan Jufri, who are representing Zara's mother. Ismail confirmed that the viral audio was authentic and involves the mother and daughter. Zara Qairina had claimed friend was ‘almost touched' by senior students

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Zara Qairina Mahathir, who died after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school hostel in Sabah, claimed that one of her friends was almost 'touched' by Form Four students. Zara Qairina had alleged the incident in a conversation with her mother, Noraidah Lamat, a recording of which has made the rounds on social media, Sinar Harian reported. The 13-year-old had claimed that her friend was summoned to a classroom in her school after being accused of spreading a rumour that a woman had a crush on one of the senior students. Zara Qairina said her friend had gone to the classroom alone and was confronted by a group of seniors. 'She was almost touched then,' she was heard saying. She also claimed that her friend cried after the incident. Noraidah went on to remark that maybe her daughter had also been slandered in the past. According to Sinar Harian, the recording was among the evidence to prove that bullying was going on in the school. Noraidah's lawyer, Hamid Ismail, confirmed the recording. Before this, two other recordings were made public, one of which suggested that Zara Qairina was worried about her safety. Zara Qairina was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school hostel in Papar. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the next day. Sabah police commissioner Jauteh Dikun had said Bukit Aman was reviewing the case and police had not ruled out the possibility that the Form One student had been bullied.
