Dibrugarh: A sprawling 16-bigha eco park featuring a unique museum of lost trees and Miyawaki forest will soon transform the landscape of Lakhimpur, as chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday launched an ambitious Rs 110 crore development package for the district.
The centerpiece North Lakhimpur Eco Park, with an investment of Rs 4.25 crore, promises to become the town's environmental showcase. The innovative facility will house a museum dedicated to extinct and endangered tree species, alongside a dense Miyawaki forest designed to maximize biodiversity in minimal space. The park will also feature carefully curated sections of fruit and medicinal trees, complemented by traditional bamboo groves that reflect Assam's ecological heritage.
"This urban forest will provide green lungs to Lakhimpur town," Sarma said during the foundation stone laying ceremony at Chandmari. The eco park represents a forward-thinking approach to urban planning, combining environmental conservation with public recreation in a region where rapid development has often come at nature's expense.
The Miyawaki forest methodology, named after Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, creates native forests that grow ten times faster and become 30 times denser than conventional plantations.

The scientific approach to forest restoration aligns with Assam's broader environmental goals while providing residents with a green oasis in the heart of the town.
Beyond the eco park, the chief minister unveiled a comprehensive infrastructure development agenda that addresses critical needs across education, water supply, and governance. The CM laid the foundation of a centralised community kitchen at Bebejia Kamartup marking a significant step toward ensuring nutritional security for schoolchildren. The Rs 26 crore kitchen facility, to be operated by the Akshaya Patra Foundation, will span 16.3 bighas and serve as the hub for mid-day meals under the PM POSHAN scheme.
The centralised approach will ensure consistent quality and nutritional standards for children across multiple schools.
Sarma also launched the North Lakhimpur Town Water Supply Scheme Phase-II, a Rs 65 crore initiative that will revolutionise water access for local families. The ambitious project will distribute 8.7 million litre per day of treated piped water to 7,013 households through an extensive 1,11,108-metre network once completed.
The CM also inaugurated a new two-story zila parishad building, constructed at a cost of Rs 4 crore. The modern facility, equipped with contemporary amenities, aims to streamline public services and improve grassroots governance. The Chief Minister also inaugurated multiple facilities at the Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science. The Rs 10.7 crore investment encompasses a professional training institute, indoor stadium, gymnasium cum canteen building, and guest house, significantly enhancing the institution's capacity to train veterinary professionals.
The day's events concluded with Sarma addressing a public meeting at Tyag Kshetra in Lakhimpur town, where he outlined the govt's vision for the district's continued development.
