"I'm scared for my life and career at this point." Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy jokes he's worried about his job after spate of drummer firings

Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy says he's worried about his future after seeing a spate of high-profile drummers lose their job recently.
Josh Freese was let go by the Foo Fighters this month, The Who fired Zak Starkey a few weeks ago and Guns N' Roses parted with Frank Ferrer in March.
Last year, Jason Bonham was replaced in Sammy Hagar's band.
Reacting to those firings, Portnoy jokes that he is looking over his shoulder.
As well as his role in Dream Theater, which he returned to in 2023, Portnoy works with a number of other groups and artists.
He tells Office Hours Live With Tim Heidecker: "I think it's the Spinal Tap conspiracy. I think nobody is safe. Ringo's son was fired from The Who. John Bonham's son was fired from Sammy Hagar's band.
"I mean, if the spawn of Ringo and Bonzo are not safe, nobody is safe."
On Freese's shock departure from Foo Fighters, Portnoy says: "Frankly, it's shocking. I thought Josh was perfect. So, yeah, it's scary. It's scary times for drummers.
"I'm scared for my life and career at this point. And I'm in, like, 15 bands, so I have 15 times the chance of getting fired right now. The odds are very much stacked against me right now."
On Starkey's firing from The Who, which came weeks after he was fired then almost immediately rehired, Portnoy adds: "The whole thing with Zak Starkey started ... they did a show last month at the Royal Albert Hall.
"They were doing The Song Is Over and Roger came into the second verse early and stopped the band, turned around and blamed it on his mix, that the drums were powering out his mix.
"Now, mind you, Zak Starkey is on an electronic kit. They already downgraded it off of an acoustic kit. They have him playing an electronic kit, which is fully controllable in terms of volume through the sound guy.
"So, if anything, he should have fired the monitor guy, not Zak."
Dream Theater released Parasomnia, their first album with Portnoy for 15 years, in February.

Pete Townshend admitted he's unsure exactly why Zak Starkey was fired from The Who. More than two months after the drummer parted ways with the legendary British band, Townshend told iPaper, 'It's been a mess.' The trouble with Starkey, the son of Beatles legend Ringo Starr who joined The Who's live lineup 1996, came after a show at London's Royal Albert Hall in March after lead singer Roger Daltrey reportedly had issues with his playing. But Townshend told the outlet that he personally didn't see 'anything wrong.' 'I think Roger just got lost,' he added. 'I have to be careful what I say about Roger because he gets angry if I say anything about him at all. He'll be sacking me next. But that's not to say that he sacked Zak. It's a decision Roger and I tried to make together, but it kind of got out of hand.' Daltrey initially claimed Starkey, 59, 'retired' from The Who to work on a project with his band Mantra Of The Cosmos, Billboard reported. He was rehired for a few days, then another exit was announced. In May, Starkey set the record straight on what went down with the Who via a fiery Instagram post. "I was fired,' he wrote. 'Roger's new word for it is 'retired' to complete my other musical projects… So this is simply a load of bollox … Am I fired, retired, deffo not tired as I'm 20 years younger than these guys as they keep saying.' In June, Starkey told Rolling Stone he continues to receive mixed messages from The Who. The drummer noted he heard from Daltrey ahead of the band's tour dates in Italy next month. 'I spoke to Roger last week,' Starkey revealed in the interview. 'He said, 'Don't take your drums out of the warehouse, we might be calling you.' What the f---? These guys are f---in' insane! Zak Starkey Has Strong Advice For Replacement Drummer
Recently, the son of Ringo Starr, Zak Starkey, found himself out of a job when The Who ousted him from the band. But, The Who is not the only mega-famous band that Starkey has been a part of. From 2005 to 2008, Starkey was the touring drummer for Oasis. And, although you'd think that getting fired from The Who could send Starkey back to Oasis, the truth is he won't be returning to that band either, mostly for timing reasons. However, he does have some advice for the newest Oasis drummer, Joey Waronker. "The thing about groups that you love – like The Who or Oasis – is that it's not a job," Starkey told NME in a new interview. "It's about protecting music." To that point, about protecting the music, Starkey says the key to being a good Oasis drummer is simple. "Make sure you get the tempos right. Then boys know." Starkey might not be touring with Oasis anytime soon again, but he is, kind of, already in a supergroup with two Oasis members. Mantra Of The Cosmos consists of Shaun Ryder, Bez of The Happy Mondays, as well as Andy Bell, of Oasis. And the most recent song, "Domino Bones (Gets Dangerous)," features Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher According to Starkey, when Gallagher heard the new song, he said: "'This is the maddest thing I've ever heard,' and that's a compliment!" All the Glastonbury 2025 secret sets as Lewis Capaldi makes surprise comeback
Whether you bagged tickets to the biggest festival of the year (see: ever), or you've been catching up with the best bits on BBC iPlayer, there's no denying that Glastonbury 2025 has been epic. And, with two full days left to go, including headline slots from Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo, there's still soooooo much insane music to check out. If you keep up with the famous festival, you'll also know that they're renowned for booking 'secret sets.' In the past, Emily Eavis and co have sneaked the likes of the Foo Fighters, Jack White and Pulp into Worthy Farm, all of whom have delivered the most unreal performances to the shock (and delight) of their adoring fans. So, as Glasto 2025 is still in full swing - and we eagerly await the mysterious Patchwork this evening (everyone is now saying it's Chappell Roan, which would be *iconic*) - let's take a look at the best secret sets of this year so far... OK, this is deffo the biggest 'secret' performance of the weekend, albeit heavily rumoured. Yesterday, Lewis Capaldi made a triumphant return to the Pyramid Stage after taking some well-earned time off. Many will remember that, back in 2023, Lewis, who has Tourette's, performed on the same stage but had to cut his set short. In front of the crowd, he experienced voice loss and pronounced tics, which led to the audience stepping in and helping him sing his iconic hit, 'Someone You Loved', in support. When he stepped onto the stage this year, as the 'TBA' act scheduled before Alanis Morissette, Lewis let his voice do the talking. He addressed the crowd: "Glastonbury, it's so good to be back. I'm not going to say much up here today because if I did I might start crying." No, we're not crying, you are. For those who managed to get out of bed before midday on Friday, you'll likely have trekked to the Woodsies stage for a surprise set from Lorde. The New Zealand musician has recently made a return to social media and the music world, having last dropped Solar Power back in 2021. Rocking up in an all white casual outfit, the 28-year-old packed out the stage - and beyond - as she performed her new album, Virgin, in full. She also played many of her earlier hits, including 2017's 'Green Light.' Just before her set, Glastonbury announced it had closed the Woodsies field due to overcrowding. Of course, this is because rumours about her appearance had been spreading around the site. Lorde last played the Pyramid Stage in 2022. Music fans who still had battery on their phone - or just happened to be walking past the Strummerville stage at 3pm - were treated to an impromptu secret set from Olivia Dean. The musician announced her set on Instagram not long before the performance, which of course, led to huge crowds. The question is now, who else will be making a surprise appearance over the last two days?
