Microsoft exec offers horrifying advice to laid off employees

Microsoft (MSFT) made an announcement last week that's become hauntingly familiar news in recent months: it's decided to conduct yet another round of layoffs. On June 2, the Redmond-based tech company said it will lay off less than 4% of its global workforce, which adds up to about 9,000 of its employees. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Microsoft has done multiple rounds of layoffs this year as it scales up its AI plans, leaving many wondering if they'll be next on the chopping block. It's a scary time to be in tech, as Meta, Amazon, and Google have also announced layoffs this year. All these companies have also been building their AI investments, with Meta committing to spend $65 billion in 2025, Amazon committing $100 billion, and Google committing to $75 billion. Related: Microsoft sends a brutal message to loyal employees Add into this that the news is crammed with threats of AI eliminating jobs, and it's naturally creating a lot of anxiety for those who have been laid off and need to look for a new role. People often wax philosophical on LinkedIn about layoffs, whether they were affected by them or simply want to comment on what they mean for the affected industry. But when a key Microsoft executive decided to do so in a recent post, he hit a nerve with comments that seemed tone-deaf to the newly unemployed. In a now-deleted LinkedIn post screencapped by BlueSky user and Necrosoft Games Creative Director Brandon Sheffield, Executive Producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing Matt Turnbull shared some thoughts on what he believed those affected by the recent Microsoft layoffs should do. More Layoffs: Disney makes a devastating layoffs announcementFedEx layoffs signal a concerning business trendMeta quietly plans rude awakening for employees after layoffs "These are really challenging times, and if you're navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you're not alone, and you don't have to go it alone," Turnbull wrote. "I know these types of tools engender strong feelings in people, but I'd be remiss in not trying to offer the best advice I can under the circumstances," he continued. "I've been experimenting with ways to use LLM AI tools (like ChatGPT or Copilot) to help reduce the emotional and cognitive load that comes with job loss." Related: Microsoft joins Facebook and Google in upsetting practice Turnbull goes on to recommend a few prompts those affected by layoffs can use, including career planning prompts, resume help, how to draft a post to foster networking, and even how to ask an LLM for help with imposter syndrome. In his own post where he shared the screencap, Sheffield said, "Something I've realized over time is people in general lack the ability to think in a broader scope and include context and eventualities. But after thousands of people get laid off from your company, maybe don't suggest they turn to the thing you're trying to replace them with for solace." While the June jobs report looked positive at a glance, with the unemployment rate falling to 4.1% and 147,000 nonfarm jobs added per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a deeper look reveals other troubles. Unemployment duration increased from 21.8 to 23 weeks, signifying a longer struggle to find work, and the percentage of people unemployed for 27 weeks or more rose to 23.3%. More stories are also emerging about the use of AI in both hiring and applying. Jobseekers have begun to report experiencing job interviews with AI instead of with human beings, with many finding the process clinical and disappointing. To fight back against what seems like an impossible job market, many applicants are also using AI to mass apply to jobs, leaving recruiters overwhelmed and unable to cope. Meanwhile, a recent ResumeBuilder survey also found that 66% of managers now turn to AI chatbots such as ChatGPT when making decisions about layoffs. In addition, 78% turn to it for decisions on raises, while 77% use it for deciding on promotions. India court rejects Turkey-based Celebi's airport security clearance, lawyer sources say

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -An Indian court rejected on Monday a plea by Turkey-based Celebi against a government order revoking the security clearance of the firm to provide aviation ground services in the South Asian nation, three lawyer sources said. Turkey came out in support of Pakistan during its military conflict with India in May, angering many Indians and prompting New Delhi to cancel Celebi's clearance in the "interest of national security". Celebi Airport Services India, in a May 16 filing seen by Reuters, asked the Delhi High Court to set aside that decision, arguing it would impact 3,791 jobs and investor confidence, and was issued without any warning to the company. The Delhi High Court rejected the company's plea on Monday to overturn the revoking of security clearance, three lawyers involved in the case told Reuters. More details of the court proceedings are expected to be published online. India argued that courts have previously held that in some cases national security concerns can outweigh the requirement of fairness. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said in May that airport ground operators have detailed access to the physical infrastructure as well as passenger details, including VIP movements. Celebi did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Profits at the Macallan's Parent Company Dropped 26% This Year

The Macallan is one of the most popular and recognizable scotch whisky brands in the world, but even this esteemed single malt distillery might be facing some tough times ahead. According to a recent article that ran at the website Scottish Financial News, the Macallan's parent company, Edrington, reported that its profits were down by 26 percent and core revenue down by 10 percent as of March of this year, part of a continuing trend of worrying news for the global spirits industry. In financial terms, that is the equivalent of £274.4 million in pre-tax profits and £912 million in revenue, which the company is blaming on 'reduced consumer demand' over the past financial year. 'After several years of unprecedented growth for premium spirits and industry-leading results posted by Edrington, the business felt the full effect of the global economic downturn during the year,' said CEO Scott McCroskie, according to Scottish Financial News. 'Looking ahead, the political and economic backdrop remains volatile, which we expect will continue to weigh on consumer sentiment in the coming year. We believe top-line growth will be difficult to come by in this environment, although adjustments to overheads and brand investment are expected to align net sales and core contribution more closely next year.' More from Robb Report Porsche Club of America Members Get First Dibs on This New, Ultra-Limited 911 VisionF's New Speedboat Can Hit a Staggering 92 MPH at Full Tilt This New $55 Million Greenwich Mansion Has Both Indoor and Outdoor Pools Given this challenging environment, last week Edrington announced that it had finalized the sale of two of its popular scotch brands, yhe Famous Grouse and Naked Malt, to fellow Scottish company William Grant & Sons (owner of Glenfiddich, The Balvenie, and Hendrick's Gin). The terms of the sale were not disclosed, but new the new owner expressed a great deal of enthusiasm about the acquisition, saying that it sees a lot of potential in the lesser known Naked Malt brand. There were some bright spots for Edrington despite this news, however. Sales of the Macallan showed strength as the company said that its 200th anniversary year was the second-highest ever for sales, with Asia posting positive numbers in particular (specifically South Korea, Japan, and China, where the distillery's 12-, 15-, and 18-year-old expressions remain popular), and Brugal Rum showed strength in the Dominican Republic where it is produced. Going forward, Edrington says it will continue its strategy of focusing on ultra-premium spirits and will 'continue to… strengthen our brands and our business for the long-term benefit of our investors, our employees, and those who benefit from our own and our principal shareholder's charitable activities.' It remains to be seen if that will be enough to boost sales over the coming year, but we will continue to report on this news over the coming year.
