Heathrow willing to scale back third runway after outcry over cost

Telegraph23-07-2025
Heathrow has confirmed it is willing to build a shorter, cheaper third runway following an outcry from airlines over cost.
Europe's busiest airport will indicate its readiness to negotiate with carriers over runway options when it submits a formal pitch to ministers next week, said Thomas Woldbye, the airport's chief executive.
While Heathrow is still expected to make the case for a full-length runway that would encroach on the M25 and cost more than £60bn, according to some estimates, Mr Woldbye said the proposals will feature 'as many options as is possible at this time'.
The flexibility marks a change of tack after he said earlier this year that ripping up a two-mile stretch of Britain's busiest motorway could not be avoided.
The turnaround follows a campaign led by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, which have accused the airport of favouring a 'gold-plated' expansion plan that could see departure fees swell to as much as £100 a passenger for long-haul flights.
Mr Woldbye said: 'Length of runway is something we will be discussing with airlines. It does not necessarily have to be final in the plan next week.

Galatasaray break Turkish transfer record to sign Osimhen from Napoli

GDANSK, July 31 (Reuters) - Galatasaray have signed striker Victor Osimhen from Serie A side Napoli for 75 million euros (85.74 million dollars), the Super Lig champions announced on Thursday, making the 26-year-old the most expensive incoming transfer in Turkish soccer. Why airline refused refund to widow over late husband's ticket

Ryanair initially denied Yvonne Shields a full refund for flight tickets purchased by her late husband, Colin Shields. Colin Shields, who was tetraplegic, had booked flights from Edinburgh to Venice for himself and two carers to attend a power-chair football match before his death in April. The airline told Ms Shields they needed to speak to the original booker, despite being informed of Mr Shields' death and seeing a death certificate. Ryanair later confirmed that a refund of £257.58 for Mr Shields' ticket was issued The airline said the 'incorrect' advice given to Ms Shields was 'regrettable' and added their customer service department would assist her in correcting the error and processing the full refund.

Unassuming seaside home with its own TUNNELS goes on sale for £625,000 - and you'll never guess the surprise feature in the garden!

An idyllic four-bed family home perched on the Dorset coast has gone on the market - but it's not just for the 'breathtaking' sea views that the property is seemingly attracting attention. Dubbed The Verne, potential buyers have been impressed by the dramatic landscape afforded by the house built at the top of the Isle of Portland, which comes with a price tag of £625,000. But there are some rather unique features that are included with the home, which was originally part of an old fort. One are the three layers of historic tunnels meandering underneath the property - while the other is a hefty military cannon strategically placed on a green verge facing the ocean. The showstopper is located in the garden, where a stone entrance leads down to the layers of tunnels 'steeped in history'. Once part of the fort's defences, the tunnels extend across three levels, with slotted stone openings to reveal the property's elevated position, and there are two large chambers inside the tunnels. Inside, the abode is much like any other family home, with a large open-plan kitchen, cosy lounge and plenty of natural light to make the most of the view. The stunning vista looks out over Weymouth Bay, Chesil Beach and the Jurassic Coastline, as reported by Luxury Property News. A spacious garden offers plenty of room for entertaining for anyone keen to stay above-ground, with nearby amenities including Portland Harbour to enjoy. The property is currently available with Wilson Tominey Estate Agents for £625,000.
