Comilla rape case: Bangladesh erupts in protest after video of minority woman's rape goes viral
Nationwide protests erupted in Bangladesh on Sunday following the circulation of a viral video showing the alleged rape of a woman from a minority community in Cumilla district, central Bangladesh, three days ago.
Authorities confirmed the arrest of the main accused along with several others in connection with the case.
Cumilla district police chief Nazir Ahmed Khan stated that the prime suspect was detained during a pre-dawn operation in Dhaka's Sayedabad area. Four other individuals were taken into custody for posting the victim's photo and identity on social media.

Students from Dhaka University held protest marches on campus, with residents of Jagannath Hall, home to many minority students organising separate processions demanding justice.
Secretary General of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded exemplary punitive action against the culprits.
The High Court, meanwhile, issued a directive asking authorities to immediately remove the video of the assault that went viral on social media on Saturday.
The two-judge bench also asked the authorities concerned to ensure security of the rape survivor and provide her necessary treatment.
Some media reports suggested the police action came only after the video went viral. According to a report, people in the neighbourhood initially released the culprit after a mass beating and took him to a hospital instead of handing him over to police. The suspect allegedly fled from the hospital.
The reports suggested the woman was visiting her paternal home at Culimma's Muradnagar sub-district where the accused allegedly broke into the house at night.
Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, who has served as his mother's advisor, took to X to express his outrage at the incident.
He blamed the Yunus administration for a rise in incidents of mob attacks, terrorism and rape in the last 11 months.
Bangladesh witnessed incidents of violence against members of minority communities following the fall of the Hasina-led Awami League government in August last year.
Hasina fled to India when her regime was toppled on August 5 last year, as a fallout of a violent street movement led by a platform called Students against Discrimination.

Kolkata man found dead, family says he ended life fearing NRC deportation
The family of a 63-year-old man who was found dead in his Kolkata residence Sunday alleged that he died by suicide since he was living in fear of being deported to Bangladesh under the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), police said. A suicide note purportedly written by the victim, Dilip Kumar Saha, an Indian citizen, was found from the spot, police said. Saha, who reportedly moved to Kolkata from Nawabganj in Dhaka in 1972, was found hanging in his room in the Anandapally West area of Regent Park. Police said Saha's wife Arati Saha, and another relative broke into the room after he did not respond to their repeated calls. He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. Arati claimed that her husband was under mental stress as he feared being sent to a detention camp and eventually deported to Bangladesh even as he possessed valid voter ID and other documents. Saha worked as a non-teaching staffer at a private school in Dhakuria in south Kolkata. The matter is under investigation, police said. Meanwhile, local TMC MLA and Power Minister Arup Biswas, who visited the family, said, 'This is what the fear of being thrown out of the country could do to a man. What they (Centre) have started in the name of the SIR shows their anti-people attitude, and the result is in front of you.' Later in the day, the TMC held a press meet, with party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh holding the BJP-led Centre responsible for Saha's death. Ghosh accused the Centre of creating 'an atmosphere of terror' that is causing 'valid Indians' to fear for their lives, especially those who may struggle to produce their parents' documents. Education Minister Bratya Basu also condemned the incident, calling the BJP's 'insulting and harassing' notices to Hindu Bengalis regarding the NRC. 'The way in which the BJP has been sending NRC notices to Hindu Bengalis, is to insult and harass them. Not being able to tolerate this, Dilip Kumar Saha has ended his life. Government needs to pass bills but SIR may keep Parliament paralysed
. NEW DELHI: As the month-long monsoon session of Parliament enters its third week on Monday, another round of deadlock is not ruled out even as the govt has no option but to seek passage of several crucial bills, amid opposition's determined bid to carry on with its protests over the special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls. Opposition parties have been demanding a discussion on the SIR exercise, which the govt has rejected because it cannot make a reply on behalf of the Election Commission, an independent constitutional body not represented by any department. Besides, the govt has cited a ruling of former speaker Balram Jakhar that Parliament can't discuss the administrative work of constitutional bodies like EC. The govt is likely to remain firm on its stand and has more reasons for it as it will cite the "double voter ID" held by Bihar opposition leader, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav. Yadav had said that his name from the voters' roll had been omitted, a claim promptly rejected by EC, which disclosed the voter roll number and sought a reply from him for holding two EPIC cards. The govt's confidence to negate the opposition's claims has further grown as the analysis of SIR figures has shown no systematic targeting of Muslims. BJP govt's ‘Swadeshi' call mere rhetoric: Akhilesh
1 2 Lucknow: Taking on the BJP-led govt at the Centre for its call to promote 'Swadeshi' products, Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday described it as mere 'jumla' (rhetoric) and accused the BJP of touring the world to request countries to enter into trade agreements. "BJP ka swadeshi bhi ek jumla hai (BJP's call for Swadeshi is only rhetoric)," Akhilesh said, adding that in India the BJP is calling upon people to use Indian products while BJP delegations are touring the world urging for trade agreements. "If the BJP had the right intentions, it would never have had 'jhoola' (swing) moments and had not gifted gold chains to those who chained our countrymen," he said.
