Huge fire erupts in forest as roads taped off and people urged to 'avoid the area'
A huge fire erupted in a beauty spot in Cheshire on Tuesday afternoon (May 6) with roads closed off and members of the public urged to avoid the area.
The blaze broke out at Delamere Forest, with pictures showing the ground and plants burning with plumes of smoke billowing into the air.
The Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service remained at the scene throughout the afternoon with police also drafted in to close nearby roads amid the major incident.

The woodland, which is managed by Forestry England, covers an area of 972 hectares - making it the largest area of woodland in the county of Cheshire.
Six fire engines raced to the scene after the blaze first broke out shortly after 3pm. The blaze was later confirmed as a wildfire.
Road closures were put in place on Station Road at its junction with Hatchmere Cross Roads, and the junction with the Forest visitor centre entrance.
Rural police and fire crews at the scene
A Cheshire fire service spokesperson said: "Crews are currently in attendance at a large fire that has broken out in Delamere Forest.

"Firefighters have started to tackle the fire using beaters and water from a nearby lake. It is advisable to find an alternative route and not travel to, or through, the area due to large amounts of smoke."
Cheshire Constabulary also issued a warning on social media and urged people to avoid the area while crews responded.
In a further update at 5pm, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Station Road through Delamere Forest was closed by Cheshire Police at approximately 17:10.
"Crews have fully established water supplies and are using hose reel jets to tackle the fire. This has been confirmed as a wildfire due to the scale of the incident. Firefighters are working in sectors and progress is being made. Nearby residents have been made aware of the situation."

Foreign Office statement after mum gets Turkey travel ban over 'drunken mistake' during trip for boyfriend's new teeth
The Foreign Office has issued a statement after a mum from Greater Manchester was put on a travel ban in Turkey during a trip for her boyfriend's new teeth. Georgia Harrison, 32, from Whitworth in Rochdale, was arrested alongside her partner after making the 'worst mistake of her life' while drunk in a hotel room last month. The mum had spent the night celebrating her boyfriend getting his new veneers as part of the trip when she says she blacked out and smashed the glass bathroom screen. The following morning, on May 7, when trying to leave the Lexia Hotel in Antalya without declaring the damage, she was arrested. READ MORE: LIVE: Manchester services hit after train derails causing UK travel chaos - latest updates READ MORE: They had planning permission to build a garage - but built a house Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE She has been put on a travel ban and remained in the country in the seven weeks since the incident. She claimed she was told to pay the sum of £15,000 for the damage and after 'resisting arrest' to have her travel ban removed and appeared in court. What followed has been weeks of turmoil for the Greater Manchester mum, with Georgia previously telling the M.E.N she initially offered a sum of £3,000 and instructed legal representatives to try and fight for the travel ban to be lifted so she could return home with her daughter, aged 12. The Foreign Office has since issued a statement confirming they are in contact with Turkish authorities over the mum's travel ban, which has prevented her from flying back home to Rochdale. An FCDO spokesperson said: 'We are providing support to a British woman who has received a travel ban in Turkey and are in contact with the local authorities." As part of their support overseas, the Foreign Office is able provide the details of where to access interpreters. "I got drunk and I have somehow smashed the shower screen of the hotel room and damaged the room. [It was the] worst mistake of my life. Anyway it's done, I can't change it but wow am I paying for it," Georgia said last week. "I know I did wrong and I regret being so stupid to have damaged the hotel, but I need to get home to my daughter. "I'm sorry I was scared and I just tried to get away from it by trying to leave. Yes it was the wrong thing to do, but I was scared and not thinking straight. Maybe if I didn't, I would be in this mess. I know only I am to blame and my actions are the reason I cannot see my daughter." Since the incident, Georgia claims she has appeared in court and unknowingly signed an agreement to pay back £15,000 in damages, was originally denied a solicitor, and has also been unable to access her vital medication, which she only had a five-day supply of for her original trip. Despite attempts at mediation with legal representatives overseas, she says the travel ban has still not been lifted, with the fine looming over her, and she has since tried to flee the country via plane, a ferry and a day trip to Greece. In an updated public post on Facebook earlier this week, the mum said she has now offered £10,000 in damages to be able to finally fly home, but that she is still 'no closer' to a solution and needs 'to get home to my child'. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for Georgia to pay the fine and support her with costs while staying in Turkey. Met Office issues new heatwave update as thunderstorm timings change amid weather warning
Forecasters have issued an update ahead of thunderstorms making their way across the UK. Heatwave conditions have swept the country in the last few days, with dry weather and scorching temperatures hovering around 30C. But a change is on the way in many areas later today (June 21), the Met Office says. A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms had been issued for almost all of the north, plus parts of Wales and the Midlands. In these areas, there is a chance of lightning strikes and sudden flooding, forecasters say. The warning was previously issued for 13 hours from 3pm today until 4am on Sunday morning. But in an update issued this morning, the Met Office has now changed the times the warning is in force. It will now come into effect at 5pm and last until 3am on Sunday morning. The warning now also covers more areas of Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, running as far north-east as Cove Harbour. The changes are more in line with the forecast shown on Met Office maps this morning, which suggest stormy conditions could sweep the North this evening and reaching south-east Scotland. A Met Office spokesperson said: "Whilst some showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected during Saturday afternoon, further and potentially intense thunderstorms are likely to develop during Saturday evening across northwest England and perhaps northeast Wales. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE "Whilst there is still some uncertainty in when and where these develop, thunderstorms could produce a combination of frequent lightning, large hail, strong winds and heavy rain (in places, 30-40 mm in less than two hours) as they move northeast into northeast England and perhaps southeast Scotland overnight. "Thunderstorms are expected to move offshore into the North Sea during the latter part of Saturday night." --- For the latest stories and breaking news visit Get the latest headlines, features and analysis that matter to you by signing up to our various Manchester Evening News newsletters here. Full list of areas hit by 13-hour Met Office thunderstorm warning
The recent spell of hot, dry weather looks set to come to a dramatic conclusion in some parts of the UK. Forecasters from the Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms. The warning had been scheduled to come into effect at 3pm today (June 21) and last until 4am on Sunday morning. READ MORE: Woman on all-inclusive holiday fighting for life in hospital in Crete READ MORE: Latest Met Office maps show when and where thunderstorms will hit as weather alert in place But in a new update, it has been revised down to run from 5pm until 3am tomorrow. It covers a large section of the country - including almost the entire North, plus parts of Wales and the Midlands. The update also saw the warning move into parts of south-east Scotland. In these areas, the Met Office says people should expect 'scattered thunderstorms' which could have a dramatic impact - including flash floods. A Met Office spokesperson said: "Whilst many places will likely remain dry and unaffected, scattered thunderstorms may develop during Saturday afternoon, lasting through the evening hours, moving northeastwards before eventually clearing to the North Sea by the early hours of Sunday. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE "The most intense thunderstorms could produce frequent lightning, large hail and gusty winds, along with some heavy downpours for a time. This may lead to some surface water impacts in places."
