Zavala has double-double, High Point rallies past Longwood 59-53 for Big South title, 2nd NCAA berth

Washington Post10-03-2025
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Navaeh Zavala scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Highwood rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Longwood 59-53 in the Big South Conference championship game on Sunday and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time.
Without point guard Nakyah Terrell, who was injured in the semifinal game, the top-seeded Panthers struggled offensively for most of the game before finding a way to pull it out.
Earlier in the day the High Point men earned their first NCAA berth with a big second half rally.
Jaleesa Lawrence added 12 points for High Point (21-11), which ran its winning streak to nine games heading to its first Big Dance since 2021. Lauren Scott had 11 points, including a clutch 3-pointer in the fourth quarter and three free throws in the closing seconds.
Malea Brown had 14 points and 10 rebounds for second-seeded Longwood (22-11), whose only NCAA appearance came in 2022.
For the most part the game lacked any offensive continuity but Zavala had a three-point play to start a little surge that Scott finished with a rare High Point 3-pointer for its big lead of 54-48 and first lead since the first quarter.
Longwood shot 56% in the first half, making 6 of 7 3-pointers, for a 35-32 lead but the Lancers shot 23% from after intermission and missed all three 3s. They also finished with a season-high 25 turnovers.
Highwood shot just 39%, including a 3 of 18 performance behind the arc but made 12 of 14 free throws and had just 17 turnovers against a team that forces 25 a game.
Longwood led 35-32 at the half and 47-42 entering the fourth quarter.

Key Alabama starter scheduled to return in 2026, per report

Alabama baseball left-hander Zane Adams is expected to return to the Crimson Tide for the 2026 season. According to a report Sunday from the Tuscaloosa News' Emilee Smarr, Adams is scheduled to return to Alabama for his junior season. Smarr's report states that an American League scout told the Tuscaloosa News that Alabama "took care of" the pitcher financially. The 21-year-old Adams, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound southpaw from Porter, Texas, was a weekend starter for the Crimson Tide this past season and tied with Riley Quick for the team lead with 14 starts. Adams finished 7-4 with an ERA of 5.54 over 65 innings. He struck out 62 batters and walked 26 while posting a 1.55 WHIP. Opponents batted .283 against him. Adams' best outing in SEC play came on April 26 against Missouri. He held the Tigers to one run on five hits while striking out five batters in a seven-inning complete game in the Crimson Tide's 12-1 victory over Missouri to finish off a three-game sweep. In his previous start against LSU a week earlier on April 19, Adams held the Tigers to one run in five innings in a 7-4 win in Baton Rouge. Adams pitched into the sixth inning or later five times in 2025. Alabama finished the season 41-18 overall and went 16-14 in conference play. The Crimson Tide were a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and were swept in the Hattiesburg Regional. Alabama's 40 wins in the regular season were a first for the program since 2002. USC men's basketball reportedly to open 2025-2026 season vs Cal Poly at Galen Center

While the start of the 2025 college football season is just around the corner, college basketball is not all that far away, either. On Friday, details were reported regarding USC men's basketball's first game of the year. Friday afternoon, college basketball analyst Rocco Miller reported that the Trojans will host Big West foe Cal Poly at Galen Center on November 3. The game will be the season opener for both teams. This is the second nonconference matchup of USC's that Miller has reported in the past week. Recently, he revealed that the Trojans are finalizing an agreement to face Illinois State at Intuit Dome in Inglewood on November 14. USC is entering Year 2 under head coach Eric Musselman. After an underwhelming 2024-2025 season, the Trojans will be looking to level up and return to NCAA Tournament contention in 2025-2026. They need to have a month of November which is much more successful than what they produced last year. USC stumbled out of the gate last season and reduced its NCAA Tournament margin for error. That can't happen this coming November.

Jace LaViolette injury update: Latest updates on Texas A&M outfielder before MLB Draft

Texas A&M baseball's Jace LaViolette enters the 2025 MLB Draft as one of the more intriguing prospects on the draft board. The intrigue for the Aggies' left-handed slugger doesn't have to do with his skills and power at the plate, but instead the uncertainty with his health after sustaining a broken hand in the SEC tournament. LaViolette's position entering Day 1 of the MLB draft in Atlanta is similar to the one that his former teammate, Braden Montgomery, was in last season after he sustained a season-ending injury of his own in the NCAA Tournament, which cost Montgomery a few slots (and money) in the first round. The Aggies' 6-foot-6 outfielder, who is the No. 20-ranked draft prospect on MLB Pipeline, entered the 2025 college baseball season as the projected No. 1 overall pick, but with his hand injury and a down junior campaign, LaViolette has dropped into the No. 10 to No. 25 pick range in the first round. Though his odds of being a No. 1 overall pick are done, LaViolette is still considered one of the best college position players available in this year's draft. Known for his raw power and ability to demolish balls from inside the left batter's box, LaViolette hit 68 career home runs in three seasons at Texas A&M while posting a career .285 average. Here's the latest injury update on LaViolette ahead of the first round of the MLB draft and more, including his latest MLB mock draft projections: Jace LaViolette injury update LaViolette sustained a broken left hand injury in the fifth inning of Texas A&M's 3-2 second-round win against Auburn on May 22 in the SEC baseball tournament. The injury came about during an at-bat where LaViolette attempted to swing at a pitch before the ball came in on him and hit him off his knuckles and the knob of the bat. He briefly stayed in the game but then exited the game after signaling into the Aggies' dugout from first base that he couldn't stay in the game and fight off the pain. He returned to Texas A&M's dugout in the seventh inning with his entire left hand and wrist wrapped with a splint. Texas A&M coach Michael Earley initially told reporters at the SEC tournament that LaViolette's injury would keep him out for the remainder of the conference tournament, but the plans for the Aggies' outfielder were reversed as he played in the quarterfinals vs. LSU. "I'm not sure if I can say, but he will be out for the remainder of the tournament," Earley said after Texas A&M's win over Auburn on May 22. While have been no public updates on how LaViolette's recovery has been since the Aggies' season ended on May 23, he did have surgery prior to Texas A&M's quarterfinal game vs. LSU on May 23 and was in the lineup for that game. He was also invited to the MLB Draft Combine, which took place June 17 through June 21 at Chase Field in Phoenix. What is Jace LaViolette's injury? LaViolette has been dealing with a broken left hand injury. He had surgery immediately, where he got a pin placed into his hand, and returned to the lineup the next day for the Aggies. "Got hit in the hand yesterday. Broke a bone in there and got surgery and played today. I'd run through a brick wall for this guy (Texas A&M coach Michael Earley)," LaViolette said at the SEC Tournament on May 24. Added Earley: "He had surgery last night at 7 p.m. and played in a game (tonight) at 6:45. For him to do what he did today, I mean that's just maybe the most incredible thing I've ever seen on a baseball field and it just shows a lot about how much that kid cares about his team." Jace LaViolette MLB mock draft projections Here's a look at LaViolette's latest mock draft projections from MLB draft analysts: Jace LaViolette stats Here's a year-by-year breakdown of LaViolette's stats at Texas A&M:
