Nantucket Film Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary

Boston Globe7 days ago

Brabbée said this year's festival feels like both a celebration and reunion as past festivalgoers, talent, staff members, filmmakers, and community members prepare to return to Nantucket.
'We're really excited to have so many people who have been part of the festival's fabric over the years be woven back in,' she said. 'And of course, the audience, we're really excited to just share what we've created for them.'

For over a year, Brabbée and her team have planned numerous events to celebrate NFF's three decades of storytelling. One of those is this year's seaside garden soiree, '

Brabbée also highlighted an event where journalist Lesley Stahl will lead a discussion with historian Nathaniel Philbrick

The heart of the festival, of course, is film.
The week kicks off with a pre-festival screening on June 24 of NFF's centerpiece film, '
The documentary celebrates the film's cultural impact with never-before-seen footage from director Steven Spielberg. It'll be followed by a panel discussion of the film's effects on the industry and the public's perception of sharks.
Then on the festival's official first day, NFF has two films lined up.

Basil Tsiokos, NFF's senior programmer, said figuring out an opener for a festival can be challenging because it's about getting a sense of what audiences want to see while considering the tone being set for the rest of the festival.
'I think that's one of the reasons why we did two films for opening night, is to kind of capture the complexity of a festival that celebrates not only screenwriting fictional, but also storytelling in the sort of documentary sense,' Tsiokos said. 'So, both of those films are incredibly strong and so we thought it was a great way to kick things off.'

Outside of the documentaries and features, Anita Raswant, NFF's lead programmer, highlighted the shorts programming as a great selection that allows audiences to take in strong stories in shorter segments.

With so many offerings, the NFF team emphasized festivalgoers' ability to personalize their experiences, so they can get the most out of their trips to Nantucket and enjoy the festival community.
'It is important to gather people together to watch film,' Tsiokos said. 'Films open up the world to audiences and, yes, you can get access to films down the line, on streamers and on whatever, which is great, and that's part of the ecosystem as well, but there's something to be said for being in person.'

Priyanka Chopra Jonas Is OK Sitting With Idris Elba and John Cena

Priyanka Chopra Jonas gets a kick out of action — the stylistic long shots, the slow-motion explosions, the stunts. And if there are a couple of hilarious sparring partners in the mix, all the better. In her new film 'Heads of State,' which begins streaming on Prime Video on July 2, Chopra Jonas plays Noel Bisset, an MI6 operative on a mission to rescue the prime minister of Britain (Idris Elba) and the president of the United States (John Cena) from a global menace. After starring in shows like 'Citadel' and 'Quantico,' 'I trust myself when it comes to action, and I get to do some really fun things,' she said. 'I love learning from the stunt department. Their experience and expertise is very exciting to me.' But the most insane scene to shoot in 'Heads of State' involved Elba, Cena and a tight squeeze into a vehicle known as the Beast. 'It's just the three of us and a couple of bad guys, and it's raining bullets and bombs at us, and we're driving through the streets,' she said. 'It was the smallest space for the two biggest guys I've ever worked with. We used to chat about everything because you couldn't leave the vehicle in between shots often.' In a call from her home in Manhattan, Chopra Jonas sent Malti Marie, her 3-year-old daughter with her husband, the singer and actor Nick Jonas, out on a play date before revealing why self-care days, Magna-Tiles and signature scents top her list of essentials. Amazon's Heartbreaking Romance Movie 'Love Of Your Life' Casts Patrick Schwarzenegger & Margaret Qualley

Patrick Schwarzenegger is still riding high off his season 3 success, while Margaret Qualley continues to receive critical acclaim for her haunting performance in The Substance. While both rising stars were initially chucked with 'nepo baby' accusations by naysayers, the celebs quickly grew on fans, who were moved by their nuanced performances on the big screen and small screen alike. Now, fans can't wait to see which projects Schwarzenegger and Qualley have in store for us next. Fortunately, the two are set to star in a female-directed romance, poetically called Love of Your Life. Maybe it's just me, but I, for one, am dying to see a good old-fashioned, female-directed and female-written romance film, especially with Schwarzenegger and Qualley as the starring roles. I'll have a sequel, a spin-off series, and a prequel, thank you very much (grabs popcorn bucket). Although there isn't much information yet on this romantic drama, since it's still in pre-production, what we do know is that it's one of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. According to Deadline, everyone in the industry was stepping on one another's toes to snag a leading role in this romance film. And, because of course she was, Sydney Sweeney was heavily eyed to portray the leading lady role. Yet ultimately, following Schwarzenegger's gut-wrenching performance as Saxon Ratliff on The White Lotus, and Qualley's horrifying charm in Oscar darling The Substance, it was practically a given that these two would snag the leading parts. What we know so far is that reports say Love of Your Life will center around Margaret Qualley's character as she reels from the recent death of her husband. While dealing with these complex and harrowing emotions, her former lover and dear friend, portrayed by Patrick Schwarzenegger, sweeps in to help her pick up the pieces. Another tidbit of info we've gathered is that the film will take place heavily in Europe. Très romantique! We don't know the specifics yet, but it looks like Love of Your Life could release in theaters. We're hoping for a 2026 release date, but stay tuned! Because the film industry is unfortunately so parched of female-written scripts and directorial roles, I, for one, cannot wait to see a romance movie through the female gaze. So far the Love of Your Life cast is amazing, and it's sure to continue to be! The cast includes: Margaret Qualley Patrick Schwarzenegger Aaron Pierre If you're not already in love, get ready. Because not only is the critically acclaimed Julia Cox behind the screenplay, but Rachel Morrison will direct. And the king of romance films himself, the one and only I-wrote-to-you-every-day-for-a-year , will produce Love of Your Life. Are you swooning? Because I'm swooning. Alexa, play 'loml' by Taylor Swift while I wait impatiently for Love of Your Life! Stay tuned for more updates on and check out our for exclusives and news!

Bob Dylan biopic to be screened in Alston as part of film and music collaboration

A Bob Dylan biopic will be screened as part of a special film and music collaboration in Alston. Alston Moor Film and Alston Live have joined forces for the first time to present A Complete Unknown, which will be shown at Alston Town Hall on Friday, July 4, as part of the Alston Live 2025 programme. Steve Bentley, from Alston Moor Film, said: "We are delighted to be working with Alston Live on the screening of A Complete Unknown. "This musical biopic about the rise of Bob Dylan was well chosen by the public and fits in perfectly with the rest of the festival. "We hope people enjoy the film and we're sure it won't be the last time the two organisations work together." The film, directed by James Mangold and starring Timothée Chalamet, tells the story of Bob Dylan's early career in 1961 New York. At just 19, the young Bob Dylan arrived in the city and quickly made his mark on the Greenwich Village music scene. The event will begin at 7pm, with the film starting at around 7.30pm. Admission is £7.50, payable by cash or card. The film is rated 15 and is expected to finish around 10.15pm. Ahead of the screening, acoustic duo Benson 'n' Edges will perform live music in the town hall. A licensed bar will be open throughout the evening, offering a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Alston Live will return to Tyne Willows Recreation Ground on Friday, July 18, and Saturday, July 19. Tickets for the festival are available to buy during the evening at the screening. They are priced at £25 per day or £40 for both days. Full details of the music line-up and further information about the festival can be found at or by visiting the Alston Live Facebook page.
