It's Canterbury's curse they can't escape, and the Broncos might be catching it.
The highly controversial 18th man rule in State of Origin has once more cost the Bulldogs a star for this week's important Round 18 clash against the Brisbane Broncos this Friday.

The side have been constantly burned by the problem, losing key players like Matt Burton and Kurt Mann previously without them even getting a run of rep footy.
Mann was the Maroons Reserve in Game 1, while Burton was the same for NSW in Game 2 and other occasions in past years.
This time, its metre-eating winger Jacob Kiraz whose selection by coach Laurie Daley as a precautionary back-up for Brian To'o will cost the Dogs significant yardage carries and a pair of safe hands.
The Penrith winger played through a knee injury in his sides tight win over Canterbury last week, but scan results have cleared To'o of any concern, meaning it is highly unlikely Kiraz will take to the field come Wednesday.
Brisbane find themselves in a similar problem, running out against the Bulldogs without superstar Reece Walsh who fills the Maroons 18th man slot and has been in great form since returning from injury.

'It's ridiculous...Jacob Kiraz and Reece Walsh, they should be allowed to play in their club teams,' Mark Geyer said on 2GB.
'We don't play (Origin) until next Wednesday. In fact, I think it's time in Origin for us to bring in an 18th and 19th man to sit on the bench — a forward and a back.
'Come on, we've outgrown that '18th man can't play' thing.
'It's just a bit of a bug bear of mine. The 18th man should be allowed to play for his club team.
Coach Billy Slater's decision to shift Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to fullback to replace the injured Kalyn Ponga leaves Michael Maguire with their own equally devastating Origin casualty list.
In Game 2 it was Ezra Mam.
'It's interesting the 18th man rule, I don't think anyone agrees with the way it is,' Daley said on the Sky Sports radio on Monday.
Reece Walsh was expected to be named in the fullback role after Kalyn Ponga's injury but Maroons coach Slater instead shifted Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to the position, leaving the Broncos full in limbo as 18th man. Photo:.
'Matt (Burton) I think has been selected as 18th man five times, missed club games and hasn't played a part in the Origin games themselves.
'The reason why I picked Jacob, we've got one bloke who is in a bit of doubt and that's Brian To'o.
'We want to give him every chance to play and because the Bulldogs are playing on the Friday night we want to make sure if Brian is ruled out than Jacob has had a full 11 days preparation with us.'
Team performance manager Frank Ponissi on Triple M weighed in on the topic, suggesting on Wednesday that picking an 18th man solely from a team with the bye isn't solution for picking the optimal player.
The ultimate losers from the situation are the Bulldogs and the Broncos, who will lose both stars ahead of their clash at Accor Stadium on Friday. Photo:.
'What makes it difficult is the draw is unbalanced, so you don't know who's going to play. Some weeks that situation … it may favour NSW more than QLD because there's more NSW players not playing that weekend compared to QLD,' he said.
'We've got to get the draw right before we get this particular issue correct.
'Origin has to be played in the middle of the season, it's so big and massive for our game. It's what we do with the NRL around the Origin period, we've got to get that right. So when we can sort that out, I think the 18th man and everything else will fall in line.'
Whether the NRL makes any changes to the 18th man rule following the series is yet to be seen as the discussion grows.
'If the clubs come to me about it, we'll put it in the end of year review,' NRL's CEO Andrew Abdo said.

‘Could ruin his career': Shock Walsh fear as Broncos urged not to ‘crush his spirit'

Reece Walsh should be allowed to continue playing high risk football, according to Daily Telegraph reporter Dean Ritchie, who fears 'it could ruin his career' if coach Michael Maguire asks him to get the mistakes out of his game. Walsh had a mixed game in the Broncos' shock 22-20 defeat to Parramatta in Round 21 on Friday night. While he set up a try scored by hooker Billy Walters, Walsh made three errors, and what would have been the match winning try was taken off him because the bunker ruled him to be off-side. But Ritchie compared Walsh to former Australian opening batsman David Warner, believing that, like Warner, Walsh's mistakes should be tolerated, in the knowledge that he will win you games as well. 'He's an entertainer,' Ritchie told NRL 360 on Tuesday night. 'I said today, he's like a David Warner. 'He'll hit a hundred off 60-odd balls but he might nick the next one. 'That's just what you're going to get. 'You can't laud him one week for being spectacular, but then condemn him the following week.' Ritchie warned there would be dire consequences for Walsh if Maguire asks him to restrain himself. 'If Madge sucks the spirit out of that kid, by saying 'pull back', I think it could ruin his career,' Ritchie added. But fellow panellist Paul Crawley didn't agree, and believes Walsh needs to try to minimise the ill-discipline in his game. 'All the great players always say, you've got to limit the difference between your best and your worst,' Crawley added. 'With Reece, it's not even from game to game, it's from moment to moment. 'And he's at that stage now where he's 23 years of age. 'He owes it to the team, to try and pull back on moments. 'Some of those bullet passes or different things. 'His magic is what brought them to life this year, but if they're to be a hope of winning the comp this year or next year, Reece does have to grow up a bit. 'The great ones do mature and he's at that age now where it's probably time for him to get some of those mistakes out of his game.'

‘Tried to make him better': Luai opens up on Galvin exit as Tigers star makes huge contract call

Tigers skipper Jarome Luai has opened up on facing Lachlan Galvin for the first time since his defection to the Bulldogs. Luai and Galvin reportedly had a frosty relationship as teammates, even before Galvin's decision to leave the club. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer > Luai was vocal in defending coach Benji Marshall after his coaching credentials were called into question by Galvin's management as one of the reasons he wanted to leave the club. However, Luai told The Daily Telegraph there was no hard feelings between the pair and maintains they had a good relationship at the Tigers. 'I think he spoke about it already and said that there wasn't any beef in the relationship, which is true,' Luai told The Daily Telegraph. 'I did my best to try and make him a better footballer. 'All pre-season I thought to myself, we connected well and you know, we started the year off in great form, won some games. 'But like I just said before, he made a call on his future. All the other best of him, bro. I'm just focused on my career.' Luai refused to get caught up in the hype of playing against Galvin and is more focused on bouncing back from a loss to the Panthers. 'It's not about Lachie, it's not about the Dogs - it's about us,' Luai told WWOS. 'That's a story everyone wants to talk about. For us here inside our four walls, it's about us and how we perform on game day. Coming off the back of a loss, my main focus as a player is how I prepare throughout the week and ultimately, how I'm gonna perform. 'It's all about me and my team.' Luai also all but confirmed he will see out the remainder of his Wests Tigers deal, despite get-out clauses giving him the option to walk out on the club mid-contract. Luai's $6 million deal has been in the spotlight since he was critical of Lachlan Galvin walking out on the Tigers, despite the fact he had contract clauses that would allow him to do the same. The Tigers' skipper's five-year deal has options in his favour that would allow him to leave at some point in the final three years of the deal from 2027. It means Luai could become available to negotiate with rival clubs for 2027 from November 1 this year. When questioned about the clauses by Channel 9's Danny Weidler on WWOS, Luai moved to end speculation he would leave the club. 'Scoops? Nah, just scoops of ice cream,' Luai joked. 'I'm staying, don't worry - for life. 'I think when things get hard, people are sort of expecting you to change and I'm not that type of guy. I'm here for the long run and I'm here to change this club around.' The Tigers recently re-signed co-captain Api Koroisau to a two-year extension through until the end of 2028, meaning his contract length is similar to Luai's which expires in 2029. Luai admitted the chance to keep playing with Koroisau was a big factor in him committing to the Tigers. 'He's a big part of this club and a big reason why I signed here,' Luai said. 'It's good to see the skip locked in for a few more years, I can't wait to play some more footy with him.'
