
Tech company CEO resigns after controversy over video captured at Coldplay concert

A tech company CEO has resigned after controversy over a video captured on the big screen at a Coldplay concert.
Andy Byron resigned from his job as CEO of Astronomer Inc., according to a statement posted on LinkedIn by the company Saturday.
'Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met,' the company said in its post on LinkedIn.
The move comes a day after the company said that Byron had been placed on leave and the board of directors had launched a formal investigation into the incident, which went viral.
A short video clip from Coldplay's concert Wednesday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, showed a man and a woman cuddling and smiling, his arms wrapped around her, as she leaned back into him. When they saw themselves on the big screen, her jaw dropped, her hands flew to her face and she spun away from the camera. He ducked out of the frame, as did she.
Lead singer Chris Martin had asked the cameras to scan the crowd for his 'Jumbotron Song,' when he sings a few lines about the people the camera lands on.
'Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy,' he joked.
Internet sleuths identified the man as the chief executive officer of a U.S.-based company and the woman as its chief people officer.
Pete DeJoy, Astronomer's cofounder and chief product officer, has been tapped as interim CEO while the company conducts a search for Byron's successor.
It's easy to miss, but most concert venues have signs informing the audience that they could be filmed during the event. Look for them on the walls when you arrive and around the bar areas or toilets. It's common practice especially when bands like to use performances for music videos or concert films.
The venue in this case, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, also has a privacy policy online which states: 'When you visit our location or attend or participate in an event at our location, we may capture your image, voice and/or likeness, including through the use of CCTV cameras and/or when we film or photograph you in a public location.'
'They probably would have got away with it if they hadn't reacted,' said Alison Taylor, a clinical associate professor at New York University's Stern School of Business.
Still, Taylor and others stress how quickly such a video lead to an internet search to find the people involved — and note that it's important to remember that such 'doxing' isn't just reserved for famous people. Beyond someone simply spotting a familiar face and spreading the word, technological advances, such as the rising adoption of artificial intelligence, has made it easier and faster overall to find just about anyone in a viral video today.
'It's a little bit unsettling how easily we can be identified with biometrics, how our faces are online, how social media can track us — and how the internet has gone from being a place of interaction, to a gigantic surveillance system,' said Mary Angela Bock, an associate professor in the University of Texas at Austin's School of Journalism and Media. 'When you think about it, we are being surveilled by our social media. They're tracking us in exchange for entertaining us.'

China's Export Control Playbook: More Than Just Rare Earths
Rare earths have recently been at the center of China-U.S. trade talks and media coverage. Given China's dominance in the global supply, these minerals are often seen as Beijing's trump card against Washington – a perception reinforced by the recent U.S. unbanning of some AI chip sales to China following Beijing's easing of rare earth controls. However, rare earths constitute only a fraction of China's broader strategic design of export controls. A closer examination of China's evolving export control regime reveals a far more expansive and systematic approach, targeting a broad spectrum of other mineral resources and advanced technologies beyond the widely discussed rare earths. Export controls have been a key economic tool in great power competition. China's rapid development and application of the regime have equipped Beijing with new sources of leverage in international negotiations and begun to impact the global economy. The key question is not whether China will implement such controls, but rather whether and how they can retain effectiveness in a shifting geopolitical landscape, including evolving global supply chains. China's Growing Interests in Export Controls China's export control regime, initially established in the early 1990s as part of its nuclear nonproliferation commitments, has gained a sharper strategic focus in recent years. A significant turning point occurred in 2020 with the enactment of the new Export Control Law, which provided a legal basis for regulating the exports of goods, technologies, and services deemed crucial to national security. Subsequent updates to the Catalogue of Technologies Prohibited or Restricted from Export (the Catalogue), including its further revision in late 2023, extended its reach into emerging high-tech domains. This institutionalization deepened in 2024 with the promulgation of the Regulations on Export Control of Dual-use Items, which introduced a unified control system, provided implementation details, and strengthened oversight of high-tech sectors. The List of Dual-use Items Subject to Export Control was then released to integrate control lists derived from pre-existing regulations and rules systematically. Over the past few years, Beijing has intensified its efforts to tighten export controls on a broader range of minerals and technologies beyond rare earths. This trend continued into 2025: amid escalating U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods, China imposed additional restrictions in February on five critical minerals – tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, molybdenum, and indium – followed by the export controls over seven key rare earths in April. In July 2025, Beijing introduced a new wave of measures, including the enactment of the Mineral Resources Law, a crackdown on the smuggling of strategic minerals, the inclusion of technologies crucial for electric vehicle batteries and nonferrous metal processing in the Catalogue, and export bans targeting eight Taiwan-based entities. Recent legal and regulatory developments have established a comprehensive legal framework that integrates interconnected laws, administrative regulations, and departmental rules across different levels. All these suggest a clear departure from China's earlier, more opaque and informal practices of export controls. While this formalization helps overcome principal-agent problems, enhances enforcement, and sends a clearer diplomatic signal to foreign actors, it also reduces policy flexibility. Legal commitments may constrain the state's ability to adjust or reverse course without incurring significant reputational or political costs associated with backing down, particularly when these measures are portrayed as defiance against Western hegemony. Strategic Use of Export Controls and Their Global Impacts China's current export control regime now extends well beyond rare earths, encompassing a wide range of technologies and minerals vital to defense and high-tech industries. It serves not only as a counter-pressure tool against the United States but also influences tech giants' business operations, as well as global trade flows and supply chains in emerging sectors. One early example was the TikTok deal. In 2020, China added personalized information push services and AI interactive interfaces – crucial to TikTok's recommendation algorithm – into the Catalogue. This move significantly complicated any foreign acquisition of the platform's underlying technologies. By requiring adherence to Chinese laws and government approval, Beijing effectively influenced the transaction of these technologies to a strategic competitor. China, the world's leading drone manufacturer, which accounts for 80 percent of the global consumer drone market, implemented export control measures to restrict foreign access to drone-related components and technologies. A typical example is U.S. drone maker Skydio: Chinese sanctions on the company in late 2024 effectively disrupted its supply chain, making it challenging to find alternative suppliers in the short term. In 2024, following Western allegations of China's support for Russia's war efforts in Ukraine, Beijing announced new drone export controls. These restrictions reportedly affected the flows of key components for unmanned aerial vehicles to the United States and Europe. China's export control regime has also expanded to encompass a broader range of mineral resources beyond rare earths, including gallium, germanium, graphite, and antimony. According to an IEA report, among the 20 critical minerals analyzed, China is the leading refiner for 19, with an average market share of about 70 percent. With its dominance in these markets, China's stringent export controls not only affect global prices and supply chains but also pose challenges to other countries' defense and high-tech sectors. While the impact of China's recent inclusion of technologies crucial for electric vehicle batteries in the Catalogue remains to be seen, the above cases illustrate China's broadening scope and growing use of export controls, as well as their potential implications for the global economy. The Paradox of Weaponizing Market Dominance Given the time required for alternative sourcing and technological breakthroughs, China retains considerable short-term leverage, not only through rare earths but via an increasingly broad set of other minerals and technologies. However, in the long run, China may face a dilemma: how to leverage its market dominance without eroding the trust and interdependence that underpin it. China's strategic use of export controls has sparked widespread global concerns. The United States, Europe, and other economies are now accelerating efforts to diversify supply sources and reduce their reliance on Chinese markets. For instance, at the June 2025 G-7 summit, leaders pledged to strengthen cooperation in securing the supply chains of critical minerals essential for high-tech and green industries, aiming to break China's grip. Chinese restrictions may also spur new competitive pressures from producers worldwide, especially those in Western countries. Recently, the U.S. has ramped up investment in building reliable domestic supply chains of materials such as rare earths and gallium, while deepening international collaboration with like-minded partners in Canada, Australia, Japan, and Europe. Given all these geoeconomic push-backs, the longer-term effectiveness of China's strategy, therefore, hinges on the pace at which the U.S. and its allies can secure viable alternatives and cultivate a post-China supply chain. Successful diversification would gradually weaken China's ability to weaponize interdependence, thereby undermining the very leverage it aims to preserve. When the U.S. imposed technology restrictions on China, many of its allies supported the move, making China the target of coordinated actions, especially in areas like high-end semiconductors. Now, as China attempts to leverage its dominance in areas where it has an advantage through export controls, Western countries are responding with collective efforts to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains. This pattern suggests that China faces strategic disadvantages in using negative economic statecraft, given the broader geopolitical alignment against it. Conclusion China's export control regime has evolved from a loose policy mechanism into a precise and institutionalized instrument of economic statecraft. By tightening controls over technologies and mineral resources where it holds a competitive advantage, China can inflict economic pain on targets and gain a bargaining chip in international negotiations. However, in weaponizing interdependence, Beijing walks a fine line between asserting dominance and catalyzing the very diversification that could erode it. In the long run, it may confront a paradox: how can it preserve its leverage without accelerating the very decoupling it seeks to avoid?

Can you ever expect privacy in public? Coldplay kiss camera saga tells us a lot about the answer

In hours, the clip was just about everywhere. Endless memes, parody videos and photos of the pair's shocked faces filled social media feeds. Online sleuths rushed to identify who was on camera. Artificial intelligence and software company Astronomer eventually confirmed that its CEO and chief people officer were in fact the couple in the video — and announced the CEO's resignation over the weekend. The incident's fallout has, of course, generated conversations about business ethics, corporate accountability and the repercussions that conflicts of interest among leadership can cause. But there are also broader implications at play in our increasingly online world — about the state of potentially being visible everywhere you go or tracked through 'social media surveillance." Experts say it's more and more common for moments that may have been intended to be private, or at least reserved to a single physical venue, to make their way online and even go global today. So in the era of lightning-fast social sharing and when cameras are practically inescapable, does being in public hold any expectation of privacy anymore? Is every experience simply fodder for the world to see? It's no secret that cameras are filming much of our lives these days. From CCTV security systems to Ring doorbells, businesses, schools and neighborhoods use ample video surveillance around the clock. Sporting and concert venues have also filmed fans for years, often projecting playful bits of audience participation to the rest of the crowd. In short, the on-scene viewer becomes part of the product — and the center of attention. And of course, consumers can record just about anything if they have a smartphone in their pocket — and, if it's enticing to other social media users, that footage can quickly spread through cyberspace. Ellis Cashmore, author of the book 'Celebrity Culture,' proposes that the rapid fame of last week's KissCam moment probably answers a question many have been asking for years: 'Is the private life still what it was? And the answer is, of course, there's no such thing as the private life anymore,' he notes. 'Certainly not in the traditional sense of the term.' 'I'm not sure that we can assume privacy at a concert with hundreds of other people,' adds Mary Angela Bock, an associate professor in the University of Texas at Austin's School of Journalism and Media. 'We can't assume privacy on the street anymore.' Some version of the KissCam has long been a staple at big events — from timeouts during sports games to romantic songs played by artists at their concerts. It's easy to miss, but most venues have signs to inform the audience that they could be filmed during the event. What's been different in more recent years, experts note, is how quickly those moments can travel beyond the physical space where they actually unfold. That isn't only limited to what shows up on a jumbotron. Sometimes it only takes one person in the crowd to capture any interaction on their phone and post the video online — where it can zip around the world. 'It's not just the camera," Bock says. 'It's the distribution system that is wild and new.' Then there's the second ring of exposure — what happens after the video or photos spread. Experts point to growing instances of social media users rushing to publicly identify, or dox, the people captured on camera — much like how quickly the internet committed to finding those involved in the Coldplay moment, for example. The LinkedIn pages belonging both to Astronomer's now-former CEO and chief people officer remained disabled on Monday, and The Associated Press could not reach either for comment. But it isn't limited to company executives. Beyond someone simply spotting a familiar face and spreading the word, technological advances — including AI — have made it easier and faster overall to find just about anyone in an online post. This can happen with videos and photos shared on social media each day, even if it doesn't go viral, experts warn. As easy as it can be to be identified online today, the internet is notorious for cutting a broad swath or not always getting it right. That sometimes produces harassment of individuals not actually involved. At last week's Coldplay concert, for example, many social media users speculated that a third person seen near the two caught on camera was another Astronomer employee — leading to swarms of posts targeting her. But the company later confirmed that she was not at the event and said no other employees were in the video circulating online. For the now-viral moment, 'we can talk about what's right and wrong, and whether they deserved it,' says Alison Taylor, a clinical associate professor at New York University's Stern School of Business. Still, it's a 'very frightening thing to get a lot of abuse and harassment online,' Taylor notes. 'There are real human beings behind this.' It's hard to think that that these kind of viral moments will ever go away — and there are few legal restrictions to stop users from sharing clips of interactions recorded from anything from a concert to the street widely online. But on an individual level, Bock says it can be helpful to 'think before you share' and question whether something's really accurate. 'Social media has changed so much,' Bock says. 'But we really have not, as a society, caught up with the technology in terms of our ethics and our etiquette.' International Labor Standards: The Missing Link in China-US Trade Negotiations
The China-U.S. trade war is often reduced to a dispute over cheap exports, but the real fault line runs deeper. China has built a powerful industrial strategy on the backs of low-cost labor and state-backed incentives, successfully attracting advanced multinationals and bringing their technology and supply chain resources into the country. While the United States outsourced its basic manufacturing, China turned so-called 'low-end' jobs into a launchpad for dominating high-value industries. This strategy has worked. BYD, once a low-tier battery maker, is now a top global electric vehicle manufacturer, beating Tesla in worldwide EV sales. Apple, for its part, poured billions into China – not just in assembly lines, but in R&D. As journalist Peter McGee documented in 'Apple and the Transformation of Chinese Manufacturing,' Apple's strict quality and engineering standards forced Chinese suppliers to level up. What began as low-cost outsourcing became a sophisticated, self-reinforcing innovation engine. This has become a key driver of innovation and global competitiveness in China's manufacturing sector. As the Chinese government aligned its labor policies with the profit motives of U.S. corporations, Washington debated tariffs. All this while, companies continue to rely on China's cheap labor to meet shareholder demands. China, in turn, gained leverage: any disruption to this arrangement would threaten the survival of many global brands. This entanglement has become so tight that it indirectly but powerfully shapes U.S. policy toward China, through the commercial interests and logistical dependence of American companies operating in China. But there's a darker cost buried in the foundations of this success. For over two decades, China Labor Watch has uncovered systemic labor issues in the supply chains of major U.S. and global brands operating in China. These are not isolated incidents, but are structural features of a model that exploits rural migrant workers, tolerates weak enforcement of labor laws, and prohibits independent unions. Global companies continue to profit from it. This exploitation does not just serve short-term commercial interests. It underpins China's ambitious vision of the 'great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation' and advancing its global hegemonic strategy of technological dominance and leadership. Even as parts of manufacturing move to Southeast Asia, those operations remain closely tethered to Chinese supply chains. The low-cost advantage remains China's unshakable core. If the U.S. wants to reduce its dependency and rebalance trade on fairer terms, it cannot ignore the labor question. It must confront China's labor governance head-on – even if doing so challenges American business interests in the short term. The Chinese government, for all its claims in its Constitution and the Communist Party's charter that China is a 'socialist state' that is 'led by the working class,' has built its economic ascent on the backs of exploited workers. While it publicly touts its commitment to workers' well-being, it has never admitted to the systemic nature of labor violations. Instead, the party-state continues to sidestep the issue through an official narrative of 'striving for workers' well-being,' and blame is deflected to multinational corporations. Many Chinese citizens, including some government officials, genuinely believe that the CCP's system can improve workers' lives. The structural roots of labor exploitation, inherent in the party's governance and economic model, are obscured. Labor rights activism thus becomes a sore subject for the government. To them, it is not just about a call for better wages or working conditions, but a direct challenge to the CCP's self-image. It exposes the ideological gulf between its promises and the lived experience of Chinese workers. If party leaders deny the existence of labor exploitation, they are telling an outright lie that will anger many workers; if they address the issue, it legitimizes that reality is at odds with the CCP's charter. This is precisely why labor advocates are treated with suspicion and often repression – but also some degree of caution. During the 2015 '709 Crackdown,' China jailed dozens of human rights lawyers, but took a softer approach with labor activists, quietly releasing them or assigning them jobs after detention to avoid international attention further escalating the issue. The goal was clear: to suppress attention and not provoke an international firestorm. A similar pattern played out in 2025, when Brazil sued BYD for alleged forced labor. Instead of lashing out at international critics, as it often does in response to human rights issues, China responded discreetly and promised an investigation. These examples reflect the nuance and sensitivity that the government applies to labor issues, as compared to human rights issues that it often rebuts. This different approach underscores the potential for labor issues to compel government action and, in turn, how international labor standards can be used as a tool for change. In other words, for the Chinese government, labor conditions resonate where abstract human rights appeals do not. From factory workers to office employees, the majority of China's workforce faces long hours, low wages, and little social protection. Labor violations aren't theoretical; they are everyday realities that could fuel domestic pressure and policy reform if exposed. Tools to address these problems already exist. In the United States, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) and Section 307 of the Tariff Act have led to meaningful enforcement actions, even if many Uyghur workers are rarely found in primary factories supplying to the U.S. In the future, as additions to the UFLPA entity list are expected to slow, U.S. enforcement could shift toward broader supply chain interventions through the Withhold Release Orders (WROs), further expanding to address forced labor issues in supply chains, using enforcement to promote fairer labor standards. Yet despite the tools at Washington's disposal, labor concerns remain sidelined in mainstream trade discussions, drowned out by debates over tariffs, trade deficits, and subsidies. These traditional tools have struggled to move the needle on Chinese economic policy, which is largely built upon China's persistent low labor cost advantage. Labor, by contrast, is a pressure point the Chinese government is less prepared to resist, precisely because it implicates both the CCP's legitimacy and its economic model. Labor issues directly affect the immediate interests of the Chinese people, which concerns the government, and international labor standards can thus serve as an effective mechanism to expose the deeply rooted structural flaws in China's governance model. This is the moment for the United States and its allies in Europe to unite around labor standards as a strategic pillar of trade policy. As China-EU tensions continue to simmer, a coordinated, transatlantic approach, through shared standards, trade mechanisms, and enforcement frameworks, could significantly increase leverage over China's labor practices. This strategy not only advances sustainable global supply chains but also balances immediate commercial interests with long-term labor equity, benefiting workers in both the United States and China. Yes, there will be obstacles: political division among allies, corporate resistance, and China's likely counterattacks. But the stakes are too high to ignore. Fair labor standards not only strengthen global supply chains; they offer a pathway to a more just global economy, one where competitiveness does not rely on exploitation. Reshaping the rules of global trade will require more than rhetoric. It will require placing workers – American, Chinese, and others – at the center of policy. And that begins with recognizing that labor is not a side issue. It is the issue.
