‘Nice boy' Enzo Fernandez ‘will be even better next season'
'Nice boy' Enzo Fernandez 'will be even better next season' – Maresca
Enzo Fernandez has been backed to get even better next season by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca as he prepares to face former club Benfica.
The 24-year-old midfielder struggled to match the £106.8 million transfer fee the Blues shelled out to buy him from the Portuguese outfit in January 2023, putting in a series of underwhelming performances in his first two years at Stamford Bridge.

But Fernandez was arguably Chelsea's best player in the back half of the 2024/25 term, finishing the campaign with eight goals as the team won the Uefa Conference League and qualified for next season's Champions League.
The Argentina international has taken his good form to the FIFA Club World Cup, where he scored the opener against LAFC and created two goals against Esperance in their final group game. His 11 goal involvements (4G, 7A) are more than any other Premier League player combined since the end of April.
Fernandez will be reunited with Benfica in the round of 16 as Chelsea bid to win more silverware.

Maresca: Enzo Fernandez 'will be even better next season'
'I'm very pleased with Enzo, especially because, first of all, he's a nice boy. He's polite, he's a good boy,' Maresca said in his pre-match press conference.

'Then he's worked very well in all aspects inside the pitch, outside the pitch. Our struggle at the beginning was (for him) to understand the way we want to play.
'But he is doing fantastic in terms of numbers, goal assists. This is what we want from our attacking players.
'I've said many times that I prefer to have the attacking players score 10-12 goal each, rather than just a striker with 40 goals.
'So his contribution this season has been top and I am sure next season will be even better.'
Fernandez was linked with a move to Real Madrid in May, but Maresca dismissed the possibility of a deal at the time.

The former River Plate star was at the centre of a controversy after he filmed the Argentina national team singing a derogatory chant about France striker Kylian Mbappe after winning the Copa America last summer. Chelsea released a statement condemning the 'racist and discriminatory' song and instigated an internal disciplinary procedure against Fernandez.

‘Big Ghost in a Circus'-Zlatan Ibrahimovic Weighs in on Messi, Inter Miami Thrashing
Zlatan Ibrahimović has slated Inter Miami in his defense of Lionel Messi following the team's elimination from the FIFA Club World Cup. Having pulled off an unlikely group-stage victory over Porto to progress to the knockout bracket, Miami fell 4–0 to reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16. That ends their tournament with $21.05 million in prize money, still far more than the club could earn from a championship-winning season in Major League Soccer. Ibrahimović hasn't always come across as the greatest Messi fan over the years, perhaps frustration left over from his own disappointing season at Barcelona in 2009–10 when Pep Guardiola's all-conquering side was built around Messi, Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta. But, after seeing his former club wipe the floor with Miami, the retired Swede piled all of the blame on Messi's teammates, diverting it away from the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner. "Messi's defeat? No, don't talk about the defeat as if it was his fault! Messi didn't lose, Inter Miami did! Have you seen this team?" Ibrahimović said immediately afterwards, via Footmercato. Copyright ABG-SI LLC. Former England goalkeeper Mary Earps felt 'villainized' after retirement
FILE - England's Mary Earps waves to supporters after the International friendly women soccer match between England and United States at Wembley stadium in London, Nov. 30, 2024. (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth, File) Former England goalkeeper Mary Earps said she felt villainized after she announced her retirement from international soccer ahead of the European Championship. Earps became a national hero for her role in England's victory at the last Euros in 2022 and its run to the World Cup final a year later. Advertisement But she has spoken out about the treatment she received when deciding to end her England career last month — just weeks before the team starts its defense of the trophy in Switzerland. Earps did not specify where the criticism came from, but said it was 'difficult and it was painful' and that she was 'villainized in a way.' The 32-year-old Paris Saint-Germain keeper won the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award after the World Cup, in which she collected the golden glove for the best goalkeeper in the tournament and also saved a penalty in the final. At the time of her retirement, Earps said she was stepping aside to give an opportunity to a younger generation. Advertisement Speaking to the podcast "Fearne Cotton's Happy Place," she said it was difficult to see her friends and family dealing with comments made about her decision. 'I know you've seen something and then I'm like upset for them because I'm like 'You didn't choose this, you've got to now deal with this,' and I'm then gutted for them,' she said. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:
