'It is a bit of a pinch-me moment' - Mack Hansen delight at Lions selection to face hometown club Brumbies

Mack Hansen described his selection to face hometown club the Brumbies on Wednesday as a 'pinch-me moment', yet British & Irish Lions boss Andy Farrell believes he and the rest of the squad could still be involved to face Australia 10 days later and insisted Test places were still up for grabs.
Head coach Farrell named his strongest team yet to face ACT Brumbies in Canberra on Wednesday, confirming the expectation he would field a side close to the Test team which will face the Wallabies in Brisbane in the first Test on July 19.
There are just two tour games remaining for the Lions before Farrell names his 23 for the opening rubber of a three-game Test series and his selection for the Brumbies was the clearest indication yet of his thinking on the matter.
With the Lions set to field a back three of full-back Blair Kinghorn, James Lowe and Hansen's rival for the right-wing berth Tommy Freeman, Hansen will have to settle for the number 23 jersey as an outside back replacement.
That gives the Connacht hero the chance to play against the Super Rugby side he represented for three seasons before moving to Galway in 2021, making his Test debut the following year having qualified for Ireland through his Cork-born mother.
He still has many friends in the Brumbies camp and as 15-year-old stood on the terraces to watch his side defeat the 2013 Brumbies. Now the wing gets to pull on the famous red jersey against his hometown heroes.
'It is incredible, it is a bit of a pinch-me moment, not in my wildest dreams could I imagine I would be back here playing for the Lions, it is very special,' Hansen said following Monday's team announcement.
Yet sitting beside him at the team hotel in downtown Canberra, Farrell insisted non-selection for Wednesday's starting line-up did not mean the closing of the book on the make up of his team to face Australia.
'I understand the speculation but the truth of the matter is we have got a good side that is going to take the field on Wednesday. I will tell you what I said to the team, there is always going to be speculation but it is up to people to put their best foot forward for a Test spot from now on in with regards to the chance they have got on Wednesday and on Saturday.
'Players can play themselves in and players can play themselves out but we are looking for a cohesive team performance and that is what we are trying to achieve.
'The nature of the format of these two games allows for us to be open minded and again we play on Saturday (against an Australia/New Zealand Invitational XV) after this and have four weeks' worth of training and that everyone is used to anyway so you have to stay open minded. A closed book is not good for anyone.'
Of the other notable combinations being sent out by the Lions on Wednesday, Maro Itoje captain at lock in a second-row partnership alongside Ireland's Joe McCarthy, while England loosehead prop Ellis Genge forms a front row with Irish duo Dan Sheehan at hooker and Tadhg Furlong at tighthead and scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park partners fly-half Finn Russell at half-back.
Farrell will not back himself into a corner by calling this his first Test team and an all-Irish centre partnership of Bundee Aki and Garry Ringrose appears to be the latest midfield combination up for audition, while the back row sees Tom Curry start at openside flanker for the first time on this tour with hybrid lock/flanker Ollie Chessum on the blindside with Jack Conan at No.8.
The rest of the squad will be assured Test places remain up for grabs across the next two games and Wednesday night's bench, with Hansen on a replacements bench alongside half-backs Alex Mitchell and Marcus Smith. Andrew Porter, Ronan Kelleher and Will Stuart is the back-up front-rower while Josh van der Flier and a fit-again Henry Pollock will provide the heft.
The Brumbies, coached by Stephen Larkham, will be missing eight of their Wallabies for their big night at GIO Stadium but back row Tom Hooper has been released by Joe Schmidt to face the Lions and could play alongside 21-year-old younger brother Lachie Hooper for the first time as professionals if the latter is sprung from the bench.
BRUMBIES: A Muirhead; B O'Donnell, O Sapsford, D Feliuai, C Toole; D Meredith, R Lonergan – captain; L Ieli, L Lonergan, R van Nek; L Shaw, C Neville; T Hooper, R Scott, T Taii Tualima.
Replacements: L Bowron, C Orr, F Fotuaika, L Hooper, L Reimer, H Goddard, J Debreczini, H Creighton.
BRITISH & IRISH LIONS: B Kinghorn; T Freeman, G Ringrose, B Aki, J Lowe; F Russell, J Gibson-Park; E Genge, D Sheehan, T Furlong; M Itoje – captain, J McCarthy; O Chessum, T Curry, J Conan.

Celtic fans invade Pairc Ui Chaoimh pitch after winning pre-season trophy

Celtic fans invaded the pitch in scenes reminiscent of a big Cork GAA hurling day as they won the inaugural Cork Super Cup in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Tuesday evening. Cork City hosted the Scottish giants at the home of Cork GAA for a glamour friendly with the Hoops running out 2-1 winners on the day. The game had all the tell-tale signs of a pre-season friendly with a crowd half hearted trying to drum up an atmosphere while Celtic were undercooked as they gear up for the new season. In the end, Celtic would run out 2-1 winners thanks to a late Colby Donovan header, while Cork showed plenty of fight and were the fitter and better team for large spells of the game. In truth, there wasn't much to shout about during the game but the fans who paid to attend made sure to storm the pitch afterwards. There was disappointment for fans with hometown hero Adam Idah not selected to play. Ireland forward Idah had been a central figure in promoting the game and was in Cork but given he played Ireland's international games after Celtic's Scottish Cup final he has been given some extra days off. Idah is back in training with the Celtic squad and could feature as soon as this Saturday in their next friendly. The Scottish Champions are busy with upcoming friendlies as they gear up for their league opener on August 3rd. Although Ireland is a relatively attractive venue for pre-season friendlies with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United playing fixtures here in recent years, there is a surprisingly small slate of games this time round. The only confirmed fixture up to this point is Leeds versus AC Milan in the Aviva Stadium.

Muskerry in seventh heaven as hat-trick hero Chris Óg Jones produces the goods

Muskerry 7-11 Carbery 1-18 Cork star Chris Óg Jones landed 3-3 as Muskerry's goalscoring ability was crucial in getting past the Carbery challenge in Tuesday's McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC clash at Castletownkennigh. The Mid-Cork division will face Duhallow next week with a place in the quarter-finals of the championship proper at stake, and they stayed on course to retain the Tadhg Crowley Cup thanks to their green-flag fever. In the second minute of the second half, Muskerry midfielder Cillian O'Donovan capped a gallop through the middle with a finish to the net that did not lack panache - it put his side 3-3 to 0-11 in front and a point from Cork star Chris Óg Jones extended the lead. Carbery might have hit the front again as Aaron Hayes set up Olan Corcoran for a goal chance but Joe Creedon kept that out and Muskerry compounded matters by claiming a fourth goal immediately after. Corner-back William Ronan was the chief architect as Chris Óg Jones raised his second green flag and the county man's second point made it 4-5 to 0-11 with 37 minutes on the clock. Frees from Damien Gore and some nice scores by Olan O'Donovan allowed Carbery to hold pace for a time after that and the latter's fourth point left four in it, 4-9 to 0-17, with four minutes left. Muskerry made sure of things as Alan Quinn scored a fine individual goal and then Paul Ring's pass allowed Liam O'Connor to make it six. Olan O'Donovan did register a late Carbery goal – he finished with 1-5 – but Chris Óg Jones had the final say at the death, his deflected shot sneaking in. Carbery had had whatever breeze was there in the first half but it was not a material factor in them making much of the early running. They had an early 0-4 to 0-1 lead, though Quinn would have a Muskerry goal but for a Damien O'Sullivan save. Ryan O'Donovan extended the Carbery advantage in the wake of the goal chance before another one afforded Muskerry a way back into contention. Wing-back Seán O'Leary's driving run was the catalyst and he exchanged passes with Chris Óg Jones to give Quinn another opportunity. While O'Sullivan saved again, the wing-forward was being fouled as he shot and a penalty was awarded. Chris Óg Jones made no mistake from the spot and though Carbery responded with scores from Olan Corcoran (two-pointer) and the impressive Seán Daly to move 0-8 to 1-1 ahead again, Muskerry found a purple patch as half-time approached. They had a second goal when Daragh Ó Laoire' point attempt came back off the post and Ian Jones reacted well to claim the rebound and fire home; that was augmented with points from Liam O'Connor and Ó Laoire as they seized the lead for the first time, 2-3 to 0-9. However, Damien Gore's two-pointer sent Carbery in with the lead and Keith O'Driscoll extended the advantage on the restart. It was the last time they led, though. Scorers for Muskerry: C Óg Jones 3-3 (1-0 penalty, 1 2ptf), L O'Connor 1-3, I Jones 1-2, A Quinn 1-1, C O'Donovan 1-0, D Ó Laoire 0-1. Brendan Rodgers: 'It would have been lovely for Adam, but it was just too big a risk'

'Cork is the new Mediterranean,' was Brendan Rodgers' response when he was asked for his assessment on Celtic's narrow Cork Super Cup triumph against Cork City. In the baking heat at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday night, goals from Luke McCowan and Colby Donovan, either side of a superbly taken equaliser by 17-year-old Cork native Matthew Murray, ensured the Scottish champions claimed another piece of silverware. But while they were treated to a decent contest, many of those amongst the 26,580 crowd that made their way to the home of Cork GAA may have been disappointed not to see Cork's Adam Idah line out in the famous Hoops on his return to Leeside. In a more serious tone, Rodgers explained his reasons behind leaving the former College Corinthians forward out of his squad entirely. 'Emotionally it would have been lovely, and Adam would have loved to have played but those international guys that come back Friday… he trained hard this morning and all those other guys, but it was just too big a risk,' he insisted. 'To come back in after being off for the summer and you only train Friday, Saturday, we normally would give them at least a week before they would play. 'Adam knows. I think for him it's just amazing for him to be back home, to come back… when I told him last year, we would be coming to Cork he was really excited about it. 'If the international games were at a different time, he would have been back in earlier and then trained and been on a good level. 'He understood why he wasn't involved, but I know he's loved being back here for this short time.' Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers meets fans before the pre-season friendly. Pic: Niall Carson/PA Wire. One Irish player that did feature for Celtic on the night was Johnny Kenny and while Rodgers admitted he was also close to missing out, the Celts boss added that he hopes the Sligo native will sign a new deal with the club in the near future. 'It was nice for Johnny. He actually took a bad knock in training on Monday, and we weren't sure if he was going to be able to play. 'He got a real bad knock on his shin. But I think he was really determined to come over to Ireland and play. 'Johnny was threatening the back line, nearly looked like he'd get in a couple of times, but he always gives his all and we'll see how pre-season goes for him. 'I think the plan for Johnny is, if we can, because we still think there's a lot of development for him but yes, we would like to sign him to a new deal and then see what path it takes, whether he stays or whether he needs to go and get games. We'll know that over the coming weeks.' Celtic's trip to Cork has been short and eventful, but otherwise it seemed to have been a success for all parties. Asked if a Cork Super Cup rematch is on the cards for next summer, then, Rodgers remarked: 'I cannot promise anything, I can't commit to anything now. 'We've got so many offers to travel the world, but I also think it's good for us to take Celtic to different parts of Ireland as well. 'We've been to Sligo last year, that was great. We've been to Cork and our notion is always to come back to here. 'But the short time we've been here, we've been received so well, and the facility has been brilliant. "The hotel (Fota) was so good, and the only problem was we couldn't play some golf! 'But can I just say, just officially as well, a big thank you to the people of Cork and the city. 'It's been so nice from when we arrived yesterday (Monday) afternoon. The support, the friendship, everything has been amazing so a wonderful place to come and play and tonight was a great event for us all. So, thank you very much for everything.'
