Chemical trailer plunges into sea after collision on Second Link
The incident occurred at Km0.8 of the Plus highway's Second Link stretch, near the Malaysian border checkpoint, at 5.41pm.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel from the Iskandar Puteri station and the Larkin hazmat unit were dispatched to the scene, arriving within 16 minutes.
Operations commander Mohd Faiz Suleiman said a red trailer carrying propylene glycol had fallen into the sea, while the second trailer, white in colour and transporting sodium hypochlorite in a stainless steel container, remained on the bridge and was not compromised.
Both drivers survived the crash. The driver of the red trailer was taken to the Gelang Patah health clinic for treatment, while the other driver escaped uninjured.
Faiz said preliminary visual checks showed no signs of leakage from the submerged propylene glycol tank.
"There was no surface foam, slicks or bubbles detected. However, the hazmat unit has been deployed to monitor the site and ensure there is no environmental contamination," he said.
Propylene glycol is a clear, syrupy liquid widely used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food additives and industrial coolants. Although considered low in toxicity, large spills must be handled with care to prevent harm to aquatic life and water systems.
Sodium hypochlorite, meanwhile, is commonly used as a disinfectant and bleaching agent. Authorities have confirmed that there was no leakage from the second vehicle.
The crash came just a day after Malaysian and Singaporean authorities conducted a joint chemical spill simulation exercise designed to enhance response coordination along the Second Link in the event of hazardous material incidents.
The bilateral drill, which covered both land and sea containment strategies, simulated a chemical leak and tested joint response capabilities, a scenario eerily echoed in today's accident.
As of press time, operations to secure the crash site and monitor the submerged tank were ongoing. Traffic along the Second Link remained congested but under control.
The New Straits Times has contacted Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon and the police for further comment. Statements are expected soon.

Five more Malaysians sent to Narathiwat prison for drug-related crimes
NARATHIWAT: Five more Malaysians have been sent to Narathiwat prison this year for drug-related offences, bringing the total number of Malaysians currently held at the prison to 36. Prison director, Superintendent Surin Chantep, said the 36 comprised 28 men and eight women. "After six Malaysians, including the modern dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin, were committed to this prison in November last year, five more have been placed here in stages since January," he told Malaysian reporters during a visit to the prison today. He said most of the Malaysian inmates are from Kelantan, with some already sentenced, while others remain in remand pending court proceedings. When asked about Eda Ezrin's condition, Surin said the prison authorities are awaiting a decision from the Narathiwat provincial court on whether she and five others would be released or have their cases brought to trial. He added that Eda Ezrin is not experiencing any health issues and has not requested psychological assistance. The Narathiwat prison, located in southern Thailand, about 60km from Malaysia's border in Rantau Panjang, is a high-security correctional facility that houses both local and foreign inmates, primarily those involved in drug and cross-border crimes. The prison, which operates under the Thai Department of Corrections, enforces strict security protocols and accommodates inmates in gender-separated wings. The prison also serves as a remand centre for individuals awaiting trial and appeals, particularly those involved in cross-border criminal cases given Narathiwat's proximity to Malaysia. Over the years, the facility has held dozens of Malaysian nationals detained in connection with smuggling, trafficking, and illegal entry. Despite its location in a region with periodic security concerns, the prison maintains cooperation with consular officials, including the Malaysian Consulate in Songkhla, to ensure the welfare of foreign inmates.

Three Singaporean men charged over living on the earnings of prostitution

In raids conducted against the syndicate on July 30, the police seized more than $610,000 worth of assets, including two luxury cars and 18 luxury watches. Desmond Yee, 45, Angus Tan Chen Jie, 30, and Chua Yi Hao, 36, were each handed one charge under the Women's Charter of living in part on the earnings of a woman's prostitution. The three Singaporean men allegedly did so between July 4 and 30. There was a gag order issued on the woman's identity. A police prosecutor asked for all three to be remanded at Central Police Division, with permission to take them out for investigations. Their cases will be heard again on Aug 8. If convicted, they could each be jailed for up to seven years and fined up to $100,000. They are among eight men and 20 women, aged between 21 and 61, who were arrested for their suspected involvement in vice-related offences. In a July 31 statement, the police said the raids on July 30 took place around Jalan Layang Layang in the Toh Tuck area, Pasir Panjang Road, Boon Lay Avenue, Craig Road in Tanjong Pagar, Jurong West Street 71, Beach Road, Tai Seng Avenue, Bencoolen Street, Kim Yam Road in River Valley, Onan Road, Orchard Road, and Jalan Kemaman off Balestier Road. Other items seized included cash, funds in bank accounts, two mobile phones, laptops and vice-related paraphernalia.
