A New Jersey burger joint's unique take on a beloved American staple has earned it a top 10 spot among the most delicious in the U.S., according to a new list from USA TODAY.
"New Jersey sliders" — so named for their handheld size — are one of the tastiest regional burgers in America, and White Manna Hamburgers in Hackensack does it the best, says a pro travel and food writer with the USA TODAY's 10BEST panel. The Bergen County staple's unusual take on the burger ranks among meaty delights across the U.S. that are steamed, deep-fried, slathered in green chile or avocado, Asian-infused or stuffed with cheese.
There's no better way to celebrate National Burger Day 2025 (yes, it's May 28) than by honoring a local eatery's take on a classic staple. Here's what makes it stand out, and how you can grab a slider or two of your own.
White Manna Hamburgers has served up their burger sliders since 1946, when Louis Bridges opened the original restaurant after purchasing a diner showcased at the 1939 New York World's Fair.
Still housed in its historic 1940s building, White Manna in Hackensack sticks to the basics when it comes to their meaty morsels: Golf ball-sized nuggets of fresh, extra lean ground beef (delivered daily from a local supplier) is sizzled on a griddle top, then topped with thinly sliced onions, pressed flat and served on a Martin's Potato Roll. A USA TODAY food expert says the burger has a distinctive flavor profile since the onions are cooked directly into the meat.
The diner has also earned praise from celebrity chefs, been featured on The Food Network and The Travel Channel and appeared in several publications, including Thrillist and The New York Times.

The Dog House leans into simplicity, nostalgia, and value. Opened in 1970, this local fixture also serves up Southern staples like golden hush puppies and an old-school fried bologna sandwich. It's the kind of place where convenience meets comfort food. No fancy presentation, just a reliably satisfying bite when you're on the move. Dain's Place serves a hot dog that is a cut above the rest, both in taste and price, coming in at the relatively steep, but justifiable price of $4.99. The dog is delivered 'on a fresh baked roll' as the menu proudly states, that is thick and slathered in butter. The all-beef hot dog is split down the center, perfectly grilled and crispy on the outside, and sauces come drizzled across the top in a zig-zag for a lofty presentation. The free toppings list is impressively long, covering all the classics and venturing into more adventurous territory with options like chipotle mayo, banana peppers, and Thousand Island dressing. All of the freebies are tempting, but exercise restraint to find the ultimate balance of sweet, tangy, creamy, and spicy elements. Dain's also stands out in its ambience, with cozy bar stools and booths. Regulars sit for hours nursing a beer on the outdoor picnic tables as students trot up and down Ninth Street. Centrally located in downtown Durham, King's is a piece of history surrounded by breweries and new builds. Opened in 1942, King's is one of the longest-standing restaurants in Durham. It provides a quintessential hot dog experience all the way, nothing fancy. When asked what toppings are offered, the cashier responded, 'Anything you can think of putting on a hot dog.' Vegetarians will appreciate that amidst the menu of dogs, burgers, and shakes is a fine veggie dog. Loaded with all of the toppings, it's hard to notice the difference. A veggie dog will ring in at $3.50, while a traditional 'King's' hot dog starts at just $1.85. When it comes to budget-friendly dogs, it's hard to beat Dollar Dog Night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Thursdays, during the season, Sahlen's all-beef hot dogs go for just $1. Few things are more American than hot dogs and baseball, and here, you can indulge in both without breaking the bank. It's also the cheapest (and boldest) way to attempt the infamous Nine Innings Challenge — that's one hot dog and one beer per inning. Earlier this year Que Dogs upgraded from a humble hot dog cart to a brick-and-mortar. Though in true hot dog spirit, it's a walk-up window tucked in the middle of the Lakewood Shopping Center parking lot. Que Dogs isn't shy about its raison d'etre, the hot dog topped with smoky, tender pulled pork barbecue. Que Dogs is pricier than other vendors, with the signature Que Dog set at $9, and toppings are available at an additional cost. But the indulgent combination of bold flavors makes every cent and every bite worthwhile. Taking over the former home of Joe's Diner — once known for its One Pound Big Dog Club — Cate's has some seriously big buns to fill. The spirit of Joe's lingers with articles about Joe's encased in glass and pinned to a bulletin on the wall. One reads, 'Stand with Joe and President Obama and tell Congress to extend tax cuts for middle-class families.' Beef, chicken, and turkey hot dogs are all $3 each, with a selection of free toppings. While the decor may be no-frills, the food isn't. Cate's doesn't try to reinvent the hot dog, but it does master the basics with care. The potato bun and hot dogs are grilled to order, and toppings are generous. On any given day, you'll find a rotating cast of soulful sides, such as creamy mac and cheese and collard greens.

Sungchul Shim quietly opened Gui Steakhouse inside the Times Square William Vale Hotel this past winter. And while steakhouses aren't usually my thing, the food here is too good to ignore: dishes are precise and balanced, reflecting the skills of the chef. Shim, after all, is behind Kochi, the Korean tasting menu spot he opened in Hell's Kitchen in 2019, and Mari, the inventive hand roll counter that followed two years later. Both have Michelin stars. Following that duo, Shim opened in 2023, a more casual Mari spinoff, and DonDon, a buzzy Korean barbecue joint. Gui marks a stylistic pivot: For a chef whose restaurants are definitively modern Korean, an American steakhouse in Midtown's most touristy neighborhood feels, at first, like an outlier. Much like Daniel Boulud's new (showier) Flatiron steakhouse, La Tête d'Or, peppered in French influences, Gui – with its three separate spaces, the first floor bar, the second floor main dining room, and the not-yet-open omakase room – is rooted in an American steakhouse tradition, woven with Korean accents. On the menu, the mignonette is made with makgeolli for the raw bar. The brioche comes with a jocheong-seasoned butter. There's galbi as well as a porterhouse among the meat cuts. Dishes reflect Shim's precise, technique-driven style, which was honed at some of the city's most acclaimed fine dining restaurants (he cooked under Thomas Keller at Per Se, at Le Bernardin with Eric Ripert, and later at Neta). While Times Square gets a bad rap — even though there are good restaurants all over the neighborhood — Gui's food is a draw: particularly when you're with a group that includes a range of conservative to adventurous diners. The vibe: The setting wears an anywhere-in-the-world anonymity with its neutral dining room and private, dimly lit seating. Jazz plays softly. The bar on the far wall glows. It's not scene-y, nor is it a design marvel, which reinforces why you're here: to get out of the mayhem that is Times Square and to eat very good food. The service is tight, too, with pacing that's closer to fine dining, but less officious. The food: Gui runs on a choose-your-own-adventure setup. You could settle in at Bar 92 downstairs for cocktails and a brief menu of oysters, hamachi, and burgers (beef or shrimp: $26, $23). Upstairs, it's a mix of steakhouse hits and Korean dishes that feel dialed up and personal. But the crown jewel might end up being Hwaro, the omakase-style counter set to open this fall. Picture a 22-seat circle around a custom grill and oven, with course-by-course ceramicware and mother-of-pearl inlay accents flown in from Korea. If what Shim's doing now at Gui is any hint, it's going to be something special. On the steakhouse side, Gui delivers the classics with polish, showcasing meat from Creekstone Farm in the dry-age case behind the host stand. The bone-in rib-eye arrives nicely charred, deeply savory, and sliced tableside ($89). The prime rib marinates in shio kombu with a koji crust. Sides include two potato options — mashed with Comte or rosti with yuzu creme fraiche ($12). The eggplant katsu is a good pick, with celery root and tomato ragout ($12). Creamed corn is mac-and-cheese-like with a cheddar-miso mornay ($12). And a common side, pea leaves ($18), was recommended by the server as a dish she eats as often as she can, for good reason. Skip the steak, and you're still in for a great meal. Shim's mom ships him meju (fermented soybean blocks), gochugaru (chile powder), and yeotgireum (malted barley) so he can make his own soy sauce, doenjang, and gochujang from scratch: That attention comes through in every dish. In that vein, Korean offerings read like comfort food for the fine-dining crowd. There's the crispy-edged dolsot bibim bap with the extra umami of seaweed ($21) or a creamy uni add-on ($25). Thin-sliced chadol wagyu brisket is another option ($23). (This was the dish I was most thrilled to eat the next day for leftovers.) The doenjang jjigae with clams and fermented soybeans is elegant, stocked with clams ($15). If you're here with a friend, also order the sundubu jjigae, with chadol brisket and soft tofu and a chile kick ($15). Shim's version of the humble dan dan noodles, dressed with roasted peanuts and Sichuan chile pork, is arguably better than most around town. And while the kimchi waygu fried rice topped with bacon and fried egg might be a bit redundant ($32), the kimchi is so terrific that it makes the dish. For dessert, there's a wild coconut pineapple gochujang panna cotta, a yuzu baked Alaska, and a mousse with ssamjang caramel that's truly a black and white dish ($17 to $19). Gui feels less like a Times Square steakhouse and more like a proving ground for one of New York's standout Korean chefs: that it happens to be located in one of the city's most notoriously touristy neighborhoods might just be part of the trick. Good to know: If you're solo or with just one other person, head to the upstairs bar and order all the Korean dishes toward the bottom of the menu. The prices are fair, the flavors are memorable, and — if you're anything like me — you'll walk away quite pleased.

Charlize Theron is staring down 50 in just about a month. And 50 should be scared. The Oscar-winning actress ("Monster"), who reprises her butt-kicking, comic-book inspired role of Andromache of Scythia, or Andy, in "The Old Guard 2" (streaming July 2 on Netflix), simply has no time for society's judgmental ageist critiques. As long as Charlize thinks Charlize is hot, all is well. "Listen," she says with a smile as she peppers her comments with expletives. "I wore fishnets last night because I felt awesome in them, and that's where I'm heading right now, it's like, I don't give a ..." well, you know what. "I have limited time left, and I'm going to do it up the way I want to do it up, and that's it," she says, contrasting her feelings today with half a lifetime ago when she felt her on-screen sexuality was her stock-in-trade. A highlight and hallmark of the sequel is bringing together talented female actors under the direction of Victoria Mahoney, who made a name for herself as second-unit director on 2018's "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," a first for a woman on that series. "When I started my career, I never saw a woman in such positions," Theron says of Mahoney, adding that many of the producers and crew on "Old Guard 2" were women. "Early on as an actor, if I heard that Gwyneth (Paltrow) or Cameron (Diaz) or any of my generation got cast, I didn't even bother to look at the script again because I figured the one role was taken," she says. "We still have a long way to go. There are so many talented women, but so few opportunities. But that said, it feels better these days, more inclusive. It feels like you're not alone out there, that's the best way I can put it." Charlize Theron's daughters are not impressed with mom's superhero exploits Theron is a doting mom to daughters Jackson, 12, and August, 9. The girls, however, are not impressed by Theron's on-screen exploits; the actress told Jimmy Kimmel her kids were far more dazzled by Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible" stunts than her own in "Old Guard 2." Theron adopted the girls from South Africa, a country in which she continues to invest time and money. Just a few days ago, she hosted another block party to raise money for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, which helps community-based organizations that provide health, education and other support for young people in need. "Women in South Africa are facing femicide at a high rate and it's something nobody is talking about," Theron says. "So we do our small part, partnering with organizations in the trenches, coming up with answers and not waiting around for policy changes. And that's not a Black or white thing, we don't look at people's needs in that way. But it just so happens, though, that minorities of color are the others that usually fall between the cracks." Theron has a lot of irons in the fire. Her production companies, Denver and Delilah Productions (named after her dogs) and Secret Menu, are busy pursuing a range of projects with a particular focus on her favorite genre, documentaries. Secret Menu announced it would produce a new film on the Alexander brothers, real estate moguls who have been accused of serial sexual abuse. Next up for Charlize Theron: Battling another bad guy in the wilds of Australia But she's also just wrapped filming another movie for Netflix that will find her buff and taking no guff. In "Apex," Theron plays a rock climber who loses her husband (played by Eric Bana) and goes to Australia to deal with her loss. "She heads into nature to let it beat her up a bit," Theron says. "She meets a man who looks like someone who can help her, but he turns out to be a serial killer (Taron Egerton) and he hunts her through the outback wilderness." Let's just say in Hollywood's not-so-distant past, 50-year-old women were not cast doing battle with serial killers. If Theron has her way, she will be entertaining us with such gritty turns well into her Social Security years. And it seems she's got her mother, Gerda, to thank for that. "My mom is − well, we're not 100% sure how old she is, she's from a small town in South Africa and the records were written in pencil, I think − but she's maybe 74 or 72," she says with a big laugh. "I told my mom that I was looking forward to 50, and she said, 'Oh, honey, it gets so much better when you hit your 70s.' So, yeah, I feel like I got lucky with good genes. I think life's going to be OK for me from here on out."
