Shah Rukh Khan bags his career's first National Film Award for 'Jawan'
When the 71st National Film Awards were announced on August 1, two names stood tall—Shah Rukh Khan, the undisputed Badshah of Bollywood , and Vikrant Massey , the boy-next-door who made it big with humility, grit and talent. While Shah Rukh's win for Jawan was historic—his first-ever National Award in a 30-year career—it was Massey's name that stirred hearts. He won for 12th Fail Vidhu Vinod Chopra 's quietly powerful biographical drama about IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma 's real-life journey from failure to fulfilment. The performance had already earned him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor earlier this year. But the National Award cements Vikrant Massey's place in the big league—and makes his win all the more meaningful because, like his character, he too defied the odds.In 12th Fail, Massey embodies Manoj Kumar Sharma, a Chambal native who once failed his 12th exams and dreamed of becoming a peon. After witnessing a courageous police officer break a cheating racket, Manoj finds a role model and dares to dream bigger—to wear the same uniform. His journey takes him through crushing poverty, rejection, and the daunting world of UPSC exams, yet he endures with quiet determination.According to the reports the film went on to become a sleeper hit, grossing over ₹69 crore globally on a modest ₹20 crore budget. It's easy to forget that Vikrant Massey once played supporting roles in shows like Balika Vadhu and Qubool Hai, or that his Bollywood journey began with brief roles in Lootera, Half Girlfriend, and Dil Dhadakne Do. But it was Konkona Sen Sharma's A Death in the Gunj in 2017 that gave him his first major lead and drew attention to his nuance and screen presence.Over the years, Massey became a steady presence in OTT hits like Mirzapur, Criminal Justice and Broken But Beautiful, before making his mark with feature films such as Chhapaak, Haseen Dillruba and Love Hostel. The role of Manoj Kumar Sharma, however, seems to have unlocked a new dimension of his craft.12th Fail, based on Anurag Pathak's 2019 non-fiction book, was directed, written and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film resonated widely with students, civil service aspirants and every Indian who's ever failed and tried again. Its realistic depiction of systemic challenges and personal perseverance gave it both relevance and emotional weight. In the months following 12th Fail, Massey experimented with darker roles—a crime reporter in Blackout, a psychopath in Sector 36, and a photojournalist in The Sabarmati Report. Reviews were mixed, but his commitment to character remained consistent. His latest release, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, saw him as a visually impaired musician, again testing the boundaries of his craft. In December 2024, he announced a brief career break to focus on his family. But 2025 started with new releases and now, a National Award—a poetic full circle for an actor who has never chased stardom, only sincerity.

Vaibhavi Merchant wins National Award, says Dhindora Baje Re was always special
Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant was on her way to work in London when a journalist informed her about her winning the National Award. Her song 'Dhindora Baje Re' from 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' won the Best Choreography award at the 71st National Awards an exclusive conversation with India Today, she said, "It all feels so surreal right now. Because I am not in the country, I didn't know it was happening today. It's an emotional moment, but it has yet to sink in. I am soon going to be 50, and I think it's come as a wonderful birthday surprise."advertisementThis is her second honour after 'Dholi Taro' from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', but the excitement remains the same. Merchant shared what the award means to her. She said, "It's infused a lot of life back into my work. I'll be honest, as an artist, I still look at every new project as my first one. I still get those goosebumps and the nervous energy. I still choreograph all my pieces with butterflies in my stomach."She added, "For me, entering that rehearsal hall is sacrosanct; it's my temple, the world I was born into. It's also the world that brought me up. Dance is something I have known ever since I was a child. Also, because I've been trained in Bharatnatyam, any piece that celebrates semi-classical or Indian forms, and is encouraged in the Hindi film industry, becomes special for me." The choreographer added that people are often surprised by how she can pull off a classical and a contemporary song like 'Besharam Rang' in the same year. She shared that she "now feels there's an instinctive switch in her brain, which helps her take on different genres at the same time."Merchant discussed in detail the song that brought this honour. She mentioned that 'Dhindora Baje Re' was an extremely important part in the narrative, and kind of lifts the film."It almost felt like a pre-climactic scene, a sequence. For me, it was very clear that I wanted this to become the biggest number in the film. It comes at a very crucial point. Tota Roy Choudhury and Ranveer Singh also have a dance sequence from 'Dola Re Dola' just before that. I remember it was another high to get them to do Kathak, and because I am a huge Saroj Khan ji fan, it was rather very fulfilling," she 49-year-old also spoke about her experience of working with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. She said, "I also got to work with both my proteges, since I worked with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer in their first films. So for me to get both these artists to come and do the song was truly remarkable and special. It was my gift, my love for Karan. It's so much fun shooting with him, I would leave everything to be on Karan Johar's set any day."The choreographer added that every member of the film was a delight to work with. And while people keep talking about how the song was 'iconic', broke 'gender roles', Merchant shared that she doesn't work with such preconceived this happens later. It reaches legacy status much later when another generation that's waiting recognises it. Like I would watch a Saroj Khan or people prior to that generation and learn from them. So hopefully, we will also see those days someday," she added with a with the Best Choreography award, 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani' also bagged the award for Best Popular film for wholesome entertainment.- Ends

Pallavi Joshi Recalls Being Hit By Director At Age 4: 'How Could He Slap Me?'
Pallavi Joshi recalls being slapped on set at age four during her debut film. The award-winning actor opens up about the incident and her remarkable career. National Award-winning actor Pallavi Joshi may be celebrated today for her powerful performances, but her entry into the world of cinema came with an unexpectedly harsh lesson in showbiz. In a candid interview with Friday Talkies, Pallavi opened up about a shocking incident from her debut film Naag Mere Saathi (1973), revealing that she was slapped by the film's director on set when she couldn't deliver an emotional scene. Recounting the moment with startling clarity, Pallavi, who was just four years old at the time, said that director Shantilal Joshi—a friend of her father's—cast her after noticing her interest in acting. She played the younger version of Sarika in the film, which also starred Sachin. During one particular song sequence, the young Pallavi was asked to cry while performing a puja to the Nag Devta. But instead of weeping, she found the entire scene hilarious. 'They told me to cry, but I just kept laughing," she shared. 'After multiple failed takes, Shantilal uncle asked my father to slap me. My father refused, of course. He just pretended to scold me from behind the camera. I could tell he wasn't serious, and that made me laugh even more." But what followed next left a permanent impression on her young mind. 'Frustrated, Shantilal uncle walked up and slapped me while the camera was rolling. I was stunned. I had never been hit before. I felt humiliated in front of the whole unit. I broke into uncontrollable sobs. After the shot, I got up and shouted, 'I don't want to shoot for this film!'" Her father, equally taken aback, confronted the director, asking, 'How could you slap my daughter?" The shoot was called off, and although days passed in silence, the director eventually resumed filming once little Pallavi had calmed down. The experience, though bruising, didn't deter her from continuing in the industry. Pallavi went on to act in several acclaimed films as a child, including Aadmi Sadak Ka, Badla, and Dada, where her portrayal of a blind child earned special praise. Her career flourished through the 1990s in both parallel and commercial cinema, with standout performances in Rukmavati Ki Haveli, Trishagni, and Saudagar. In 1992, she earned her first National Award for Woh Chokri, and later portrayed Kasturba Gandhi in Shyam Benegal's The Making of the Mahatma. After a brief hiatus, she returned to cinema with Renuka Shahane's Rita in 2009. Most recently seen in Tanvi The Great, Pallavi is now gearing up for the release of The Bengal Files, the next chapter in husband Vivek Agnihotri's politically charged Files trilogy. Also starring Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, and Darshan Kumar, the film is slated for release on September 5.
